Bluetooth doesn't work properly
am 8. Dezember 2014
It's a beautiful radio, but the Bluetooth doesn't work properly. I was so concerned with the numerous negative reviews on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk, that before I bought it the PAL BT, I emailed Tivoli to ask whether the Bluetooth problems had now been resolved. This was their reply:
"The PAL BT should work just fine with the iPhone 6 and iPad 3, and even with your Macbook Pro. It is true that since Apple has updated their iOS software numerous customers have experienced problems with Bluetooth connectivity. This is true for iOS users and a whole range of brands, not only with Tivoli Audio products. This is acknowledged and discussed widely on the net. We think it’s safe for you to order the PAL BT from Amazon. Your iPhone 6 should autoconnect once the initial pairing has been made. If any problems should arise, we assure that we will take care of it."
On the strength of this assurance, I ordered the radio. But it absolutely refused to pair with my iPhone 6, which I've easily and successfully paired with two rental car radios and a Pure Evoke D2 in a store (to test it), just in the last couple of weeks. Regardless of whether I turned the PAL on first, or the iPhone, I did not manage to pair it even once with the Tivoli PAL, despite 45 frustrating minutes of trying. Typically, 'Tivoli Bluetooth' appeared, I would select it, then between 1 and 10 seconds later the phone would say 'Pairing unsuccessful. Make sure "Tivoli Bluetooth" is turned on, in range, and is ready to pair.' After a few more attempts, the 'Tivoli Bluetooth' device would simply disappear from the list of devices, only to reappear a few minutes later. The PAL was plugged into the mains, and the radio features worked well. The knobs, I must say, are a pleasure to use - the main reason I was attracted to the product in the first place.
When I reported the BT fault to Tivoli, they offered to pick up the radio and apply a patch to fix it, but I am pretty annoyed that they are selling radios that they *know* don't work properly with some iOS products. Further, it is clear from reviews on Amazon.com, that even "patched" radios do not work properly. I did not want to be an unpaid tester for the company, so I simply returned the radio to Amazon for a refund.
I realise it must be difficult for a small company like Tivoli to keep up with Apple hardware and software changes, but Tivoli are charging a premium price, and everything should be perfect. A company that really cared about their reputation would withdraw the radio from the market until the problem was resolved, and also offer patches or refunds for all the radios they already sold (whether or not customers complain). At the very least, it's Tivoli's responsibility to inform their customers that certain features may not work as advertised. As a minimum, they should include a warning in the product description such as: "Bluetooth does not work with certain products made by Apple and other manufacturers. Please check our website for compatibility requirements".
