The Sterile Cuckoo (Norton Paperback Fiction)

5.0 von 5 Sternen great text...well written, 17. Juli 2000
This book, although short and sweet, says a lot about a young man and his relationship with a free spirited young woman. After their "fate-like" first encounter, each begins to grow and express themselves as caring individuals. While constantly expressing their individuality, their dependency upon one shines through and guides the ill-fated couple towards first love. I related to Jerry and to his thoughts regarding the opposite sex from the beginning of the story, and found it interesting to see how the one person that was meant for him could change his views and leave the reader with a different character from which the novel began. I recommend this book to anyone who wishes to re-examine their thoughts and feelings regarding relationships or love, or simply to anyone who wishes to read a wonderfully written story that captures the essence of college romance.

Islam: Origin and Belief
Islam: Origin and Belief

5.0 von 5 Sternen Lucky to have been a student of the author, 1. Juni 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Islam: Origin and Belief (Taschenbuch)
I recently took Dr. Bogle's course in People and Customs of the Middle East at the University of Richmond. This book was one of the required texts, but it is far from a textbook. Before taking this course, I knew virtually nothing regarding the Middle East, or Islam. Dr. Bogle presents a very detailed, but not drawn out, account of the conditions that led to the rise of Islam, as well as how it took over the Middle East within a very short period of time. Clarity and precise writing are the words I would use to describe this book. Dr. Bogle clearly discusses the basic practices of Islam, along with the different groups that spawned from the teachings of the Prophet Mohammed. The differences between groups of Islam are understood very easily, in a short but comprehensive account of one of the most fascinating religions in the world.

The Day of the Locust (Signet Classics)
The Day of the Locust (Signet Classics)
von Nathanael West
  Taschenbuch

4.0 von 5 Sternen The death of Eros, 8. Mai 2000
West presents a satiric, yet saddened look at how dreams are often shattered by reality. In this novella, West uses metaphor after metaphor to show how perverse the society of Los Angeles has become. Love has become nothing more than "a vending machine," and he describes how the statue of Eros, the God of Love, was hidden in a trash can, covered by yesterday's newspaper. The ultimate question he leaves the reader with is what, if anything, can be done to save this ruined society based on unfulfilled dreams

God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater: A Novel
God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater: A Novel
von Kurt Vonnegut
  Taschenbuch
Preis: EUR 14,36

3.0 von 5 Sternen Not one of Vonnegut's more interesting reads, 7. Mai 2000
This book has all the makings of a classic Vonnegut text. However, it lacks depth, and the plot never really thickens. By the end of the novel, I was asking myself, "Wait, how did we get to this point in the story?" The overall idealism which is used to give character development to Rosewater takes away from the reality of the situation. The novel does have rewarding characteristics, but I do not think this should be the first book by Vonnegut that one reads.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Underrated is an understatement for Sirens..., 6. Januar 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Sirens of Titan: A Novel (Taschenbuch)
When people hear the name Kurt Vonnegut, they think of Slaughterhouse 5, or Cat's Cradle, or perhaps even that his books are often burned in high schools around the country for their dim look at human existence. Not to, in any way, down play the importance or greatness of his more famous works, as I love them all, but I must say that Sirens of Titan is superior to his other works. For some reason, perhaps the science fiction aspects of the novel, this book has not received its deserved recognition. I read approximately the first fifty pages thinking that this book would be about the same as his other novels. I almost put it away to start a different one. Thankfully, I pressed on. Literally, a few pages later, I was entranced by the language, the structure, the revealed surprises, and the humanity of The Sirens of Titan. Every time you think he has revealed the best secret of the book, another one reveals itself. This story is wonderfully intertwined between a set of characters, and the meaning of life. I have since read this book three more times, enjoying it more each time through. If you only read another book in your entire life, please let it be this one. Open your heart and your mind, and let Vonnegut pour into them his wisdom and hope for a better tomorrow.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Moving piece of literature...Vonnegut with another winner., 6. Januar 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Mother Night: A Novel (Taschenbuch)
Mother Night is one of my favorite Vonnegut books, along with The Sirens of Titan and Hocus Pocus. It is different than the majority of his works, as Vonnegut does not rely on obvious comedy, or space travel. In this account of an accused Nazi war criminal, Vonnegut lets the reader deep within Campbell's mind, in order to allow the verdict to waver back and forth between guilty and not guilty. This is a brilliant novel, and it deals with issues deeper than Vonnegut lets on. A must for Vonnegut fans...

Seize the Day (Penguin Twentieth-Century Classics)
Seize the Day (Penguin Twentieth-Century Classics)
von Saul Bellow
  Taschenbuch

5.0 von 5 Sternen Seize the Day not an option for some, 28. November 1999
In one of Bellow's best works, Seize the Day tackles many of the hardships faced in the capitalistic society of America. The main character, Wilhelm, has failed miserably at virtually everything he has ever attempted. This failure is a derivation from the fact that his father has never been able to show him love. Thus, Wilhelm accepts love from anyone who is offering, and constantly gets taken advantage of by those he trusts. Hidden within the text, is the issue of the Holocaust, and how the world must reflect and look at the sins of the past in order to progress into the future. Ironically, "Seizing the Day" is not the answer for Wilhelm, or the world. From this novella, we must realize that in order to move on with our lives, we must reflect upon and accept our sins and mistakes of the past. Very powerful and moving, this novella should force every reader to think about the direction of their lives, and the importance of love and compassion.
