4.0 von 5 Sternen A promising opening for a thrilling new series, 26. November 2015

I love the international approach to this story, which is the opening to a new thriller series.
The story is about a woman whose husband got killed in his line of work. He is not *really* dead, though, and needs to hide to protect the woman he loves.

I usually don't read thrillers, so I am not sure how they are normally constructed. I simply love character driven stories and this short presented too many characters with too little background information to really get to know anyone, which can certainly be remedied in the subsequent novel.
You could also say there was a tad too much telling and not enough showing in most parts, although this might be common in the thriller genre (?).

Of course, being Austrian myself, the references to Austria and Vienna are certainly interesting. Loved the mention of Hallstatt, the Austrian Iron Age town famous for its salt mines. It's about time this town got featured in a novel!

All in all 3.5 stars from me!

Rezension bezieht sich auf: Then the Stars Fall (Taschenbuch)
Would you believe if I said that this book is the A Game of Thrones of m/m romance?
I could also say it’s a Picasso among the long line of beautiful novels that the genre brought to this world. It just is that good.

Then The Stars Fall was recommended to me on the m/m romance group message board on goodreads when I asked about romance novels involving a divorced or widowed father finding a new path in life when he meets a man and falls in love.

And boy, this book is the ultimate pick in this category! There hasn’t been a romance before that enchanted me like this one. And surprisingly, given the set up, there’s not much angst involved at all!

Let me start by saying that the main character, the most important person in this book, is Shannon Bennett. She is carrying the story and (even though there is not even the slightest touch of paranormal activity going on, don’t worry) her influence on her family is one of the strongest bonds between the living and the dead that I have ever experienced. Yes, Shannon is dead.

She passed away from cancer four years ago and left her loving husband Travis and their children Caleb, Avery and Mason behind. Travis never got over his wife’s death and only the help of his wonderfully spirited sister Wendy keeps the family working. It takes several months before Travis is able to be a father again without drowning his sorrow in alcohol. He is saddened to see that his oldest son Caleb took over his father role in taking care of the young twins while Travis was too wasted to realize how much his family needed him.

Now, four years after Shannon passed away, Travis and his family are coping. Travis still talks to Shannon at her gravesite on a daily basis and feels her whispers in his ear. Whispers of a promise that he had to give her on her death bed. A promise too painful to consider.

He is content in El Dorado, the town they live in, where he works at his own animal feed store and tends a herd of buffalo for an elderly farmer. He tries not to let his loneliness show and Wendy is doing a good job of raising his children with him, so things are just fine.

Until a new vet comes to town. Dr. Wesley Ryan, 35 year old veterinarian from Kansas City, is all that the people of El Dorado are not: An openly gay city boy, with a weakness for overly bright clothes and an equally colorful sports car flaunting a dog shaped rainbow sticker to show the world that yes, he is as gay as he looks.
Wesley lived all his life out in the open. His long-term (though open) relationship with Todd ended rather disastrously and after 2 years of partying and an endless string of one night stands instead of concentrating on his vet career, he decided to take a break from his old life and comes to the town of his grandparents, where an elderly veterinarian is looking for a young colleague to take over the clinic. A few years of experience cannot hurt and in the conservative environment of El Dorado, he would not have to worry about horny men keeping him from actually doing what he spent so much time studying for.

Of course, things aren’t as easy as they seem, especially when one of his first clients is gorgeous Travis Bennett and his corgi Dunkyn, who suffers from a huge swelling of his face. Nothing bad, as Wesley can immediately tell. He just needs to x-ray the poor guy and probably extract a bad tooth, but Travis is determined that the dog not be operated on.

As handsome and hot as Travis is, Wesley doesn’t really get the man. What’s his problem with a simple standard operation? Why does he constantly repeat that the dog’s problem might be cancer, when Wesley repeatedly tells him it’s not?

A few days later, late at night, a phone call wakens Wesley. Travis. The swelling is back. He knew it was cancer! Wesley keeps telling his client that it's NOT cancer, dammit! - but that the dog needs to be operated on, otherwise the swelling would come back again and again and could endanger the dog’s life. Travis gives in, but he insists Wesley needs to operate the dog immediately!

So Wesley gets up, drives to the clinic in the middle of the night and operates Dunkyn, but only after a serious hassle with Travis about why he needs to sign a standard waiver form accepting that the dog's death is an option during the operation when Wesley told him the dog would be okay? Travis stubbornly wants to talk to the old vet. He is sure the old vet could heal the dog without an operation. He doesn’t want some faggot working on his dog anyway!

That’s enough for Wesley. He tells Travis never to call him that word again and if he wants the dog to get better, he better let him do the operation he came here in the middle of the night for!

Travis accepts and the operation is a success.

Wesley is surprised when he finds out that Wendy, the nice lady – and his first friend in town – working at the Crocheted Bunny gift shop in Main Street is actually the sister of grumpy Travis Bennett and she invites him to a family dinner with her, Travis and the kids - simply out of gratitude for saving their dog.
The dinner turns out nice and Wesley immediately grows fond of the Bennetts. Even Travis seems to warm up to him a bit. And in addition to that, Travis’ best friend Jason, who comes off as a rather uneducated hick and notorious womanizer, immediately bonds with Wesley despite their differences. Maybe being a gay man in a small town isn’t as bad as Wesley thought it would be.

When dinner is over and Wesley is invited to check out the Bennett’s barn (Caleb’s and Travis’ pride), Wesley suddenly finds himself alone with Travis and to his surprise, the handsome older man presses a kiss on his lips - out of the blue. A kiss that not only turns Wesley’s world upside down, but also raises a million questions. Most prominently, what is going on in Travis Bennett’s head?!

There is one huge secret woven into this story, which should not be revealed here, but which is essential to understand what’s going on with Travis.

This book is the ultimate love story. While you might think Travis and Wesley finding together would revolve around both guys rejecting each other over the fact that a gay love in a small town cannot work in rural America, the story takes a completely different path. Travis is determined to make things work, to come out to his family, his friends, the people of El Dorado, to stand by Wesley despite all hardships. I loved him for that. Sure, they had their moments of doubts and stupid mistakes. Especially Wesley was insecure, because he wasn’t ready for a new relationship after the disaster with Todd. And while Wesley would not have minded to scratch an itch with Travis, the older man did not ask him to hook up, he *dated* him – old school and all.
But Wesley soon realizes that dating Travis Bennett means dating the whole family clan. And with a few sinister characters in town who want nothing more than see the faggot vet suffer, things are not exactly easy for both guys and their family.

This book is pretty different from most romance novels. It *is* a romance novel about Travis Bennett and Wesley Ryan, but it is not told exclusively from their POVs. On the contrary, almost ALL characters that appear in the story get at least one scene to show their thoughts and feelings, from the nosy neighbor, the children to the best friend, etc.
While it made the book undoubtedly a long one, I have never felt as immersed in a story as in this one. I also loved how this was a story about love and making a life together. There was never a moment when Wesley wanted to return to his old life of meaningless sex with strangers. He loved Travis and was ready to adapt his life plan to Travis’ and his family’s which is what every romance should ultimately be about.

Wesley and Travis (especially Travis) were the most lifelike and multi-layered characters you could imagine. They made mistakes that you would expect them to make based on their life experience. They were breathing persons, not just *book characters*. I think it truly takes a master writer to pull a story like this off. Even the narrating parts were beautiful and painted wonderful pictures in my mind. I will never forget the scene in the hayloft where Travis and Wesley watch the meteor shower. The moment when The Stars Fall.

God, I should stop now. I cannot praise this book enough. I think I have to create a new GR shelf with my top 10 romances of all time, because my ‘favorites’ shelf contains so many books by now that I don’t want this one to be just ‘another favorite’ when I truly think this is a master piece that put m/m romance on a whole new level.
The only small downside I experienced reading it, were the intimate scenes. They’re sadly all off page. Not that I need sex scenes all the time, but at least the first time would have been so nice. I guess I’m just used to romance novels being rather… explicit, LOL.

If I could, I would probably give this book a thousand stars to honor it as the master piece it is!

Oh and they sing Frozen’s “Let it Go” in this book. My favorite song (despite the billion cover versions on youtube, LOL), so yeah, I love Avery and this novel!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Loved it so much!!!!!, 27. Mai 2014
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
This book is amazing!!! I was on the edge of my seat the entire time I was reading it.
The sex scenes are quite *modern* (I guess some porn actors would blush at what these guys are doing in the Australian wilderness ;-)

Colin and Patrick are a perfect romance couple, though. Patrick, 9 years Colin's senior, is a rather ruined character whose unknown motivations (the story is told from Colin's POV) make this an incredibly interesting read. Most romance novels have this kind of standard mold where the guys find each other, fall in love, split up under more or less dramatic circumstances and find each other again.
With The Station, this path was never clearly visible. Since we don't know what's going on in Patrick's head (and he's not exactly an open book to the people around him), Colin might have easily ended up alone, making this a drama instead of a romance, lol.
I just loved how you never knew what would come next in this strange relationship.

Colin is just a wonderful guy. Once he escaped his narrow-minded surroundings of upper class England, he totally blossomed and became a real hero. Patrick is a rough guy, but I could totally see what Colin saw in him (beside GREAT sex, of course ;)

Not to forget, the main side characters, Emily and Robbie, who were both very endearing and interesting.

I am so glad to have read this gem and experienced those captivating adventures. While reading it, I felt constantly reminded of Paul Freeman's gay themed photo book "Outback".

I wonder why? ;)

5 stars!!
(by the way, it's true that the 'Show. Don't Tell' rule was broken here, but I didn't mind at all. This book is a wonderful read)

I feel that I just need to put my emotions to words after having read this one of a kind story. Of course, without addressing the details of the story, it seems impossible to explain what made me feel this way.

Still I will not give away too much, for this is a book that you should dive into without knowing ANYTHING, except maybe that it takes place in the wonderful and magical rural sceneries of Cornwall at the turn of the 19th/20th century.

Jonathan Williams and his best friend Alayne Langsford-Knight, a lawyer, travel to Penzance in Cornwall to inspect Trevaglan Farm, a country estate that Jonathan has recently inherited from his cousin. Upon meeting the staff of the house and especially the housekeeper's 14 year old son, Alec, Jonathan is immediately reminded of his past that has led him here before to spend a fateful summer in the countryside after his mother passed away when he was 18 years old.

Several flashbacks in time reveal what happened 14 years earlier and why the present seems so - shall we say - haunted, when Jonathan returns to the farm as an adult.
Lives have been destroyed and fates have been sealed during the summer of 1892 and the 'ghosts' of these times still lurk in the shadows of Trevaglan Farm.

Is it a clever intrigue - a conspiracy against Jonathan - or an actual ghost that haunts the misty fields and cliffs?
That was the main question for me and the reason why I could not put it down.

This book had everything. A haunting love, a terrible tragedy (actually several of them), strong characters, sad fates.
The atmosphere to me was like a mix between AC Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles and the 2006 Demi Moore drama movie 'Half Light', with a touch of Daphne du Maurier's 'Rebecca'.

And as I have just visited the real town of Penzance recently, this book brought me back to a place that is actually a wonderful real life setting for any kind of romance story. Just to think that the characters were wandering these streets, gives me goosebumps. I will not forget this book easily. I guess it will haunt me for some time to come....

Wow, this had everything. Troubled characters, dubious pasts and two characters who take a long time to get to know each other before the romance sets in. This book was a refreshing read in the genre where 'love at first sight' is the most common way to start a romance ;)
Not to mention the great side characters. I'm really positively surprised with this book.
