5.0 von 5 Sternen Great characters and unforseeable twists!, 4. Mai 2016
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
This is another excellent read in the Alec Halsey series. In the two previous books I was baffled and fascinated by the complex plots and Deadly Peril is no different. In fact, the twist at the end of this one had me totally flabbergasted - totally unforeseeable! All of Lucinda Brant's books are wonderfully enjoyable thanks to the wealth of detail - whole worlds come alive in the believable characters, the clothes, the food, the transport, the attitudes and cultural mores... I always feel I've learnt a lot avout the period while enjoying a great read. I love the Roxton series too, but for sheer genius of plot the Alex Halsey series is hard to beat. I can't wait for the next book in this series!

5.0 von 5 Sternen A really worthwhile read!, 9. September 2015
A new author and a fascinating debut book! What I liked about this crime story was the interesting themes it explores. Complex characters - how good are the apparently good and how bad the apparently bad? (Without giving too much away, there's a virtuous character versus a slimy type nobody likes). Miscarriage of justice - the human element sometimes gets in the way. In this case modern technology reveals a dreadful miscarriage of justice. We soon know who didn't commit murder, but not who did. I admit I couldn't work it out and was surprised when the truth finally came out!
Can we ever fully understand what makes another person act as they do, or predict how they (or we ourselves for that matter) will react to a traumatic event? If you enjoy books that explore the psychological aspect you'll like this one. I enjoyed Night Train to Lisbon when a friend who knows I enjoy a bit of psychological exploration in my reading recommended it, but I like Sewing the Shadows more. It's a very satisfying mix of crime, mystery and just enough romance to create a picture of "real life".
The settings are wonderful - Edinburgh in Scotland and Plettenberg Bay in South Africa. I know both places and thoroughly enjoyed being transported there by Alison Baillie's beautifully flowing prose.
It's always lovely to discover a new author one really enjoys. I hope there's lots more to come from Alison Baillie!

5.0 von 5 Sternen A young widow emerges from a ten year marriage still a virgin. And then....., 18. August 2015
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
The always likeable young brother of the Huxtable girls, Stephen with his angelic looks is beloved of the ladies but regarded as a milksop by many of the men. He isn't of course, and for once the lady is out to debauch the gentleman and not vice versa. This book contains themes that are still relevant today and encourage one to look behind the facade to find the real person. There are many intriguiging characters - including an elderly earl who married a girl young enough to be his granddaughter in order to save her from her family. He turns out to be gay, yet gives her a whole new life and the self confidence with which to enjoy it. Mary Balogh's books are never vulgar and always full of real people. The whole Huxtable series is a treat and this one a satisfying conclusion.

A Matter of Class

5.0 von 5 Sternen A completely delightful read, 12. August 2015

Rezension bezieht sich auf: A Matter of Class (Kindle Edition)
Two fathers, one an impoverished aristocrat, the other a wealthy self made man, live on neighbouring estates and despise each other. Their children, one daughter and one son respectively, misbehave so badly that the only solution the fathers can see - grudgingly the one, with glee the other - is to marry the two to each other. Every now and then we get a flashback that explains how the young people met occasionally as they were growing up, unbeknownst to their families. Towards the end the true course of events becomes clear and it dawns on us what really happened. Beautifully written and highly entertaining, this book provides a delightful two or three hours of escapism.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Fun but not entirely convincing, 9. August 2015

I found this book fun, but not so enjoyable that I rushed back for more. The characters remain somewhat superficial and their behaviour didn't always strike me as convincing for the period.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Highly enjoyable series, 9. August 2015
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
I found the Huxtable series highly enjoyable. It's really best to read these in the right sequence, starting with First comes Marriage. Book two is Then comes Seduction, followed by Then comes Love and Seducing an Angel. And then of course, this last title A Secret Affair. The characters from the first book appear in all the subsequent books, and they're well drawn and likeable - even with their flaws. Mary Balogh has a talent for creating real people and for making every story different - no repetitiveness in this series! Following the fortunes of the Huxtables as they move from a country vicarage to the glittering but superficial world of high society while retaining their humane outlook on life (mostly!) is a thoroughly enjoyable experience. I read my way through all five books with hardly a pause. Highly recommended!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Inspired idea!, 9. August 2015
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
This collection of correspondence is intended to be read after the Roxton series, but I think if you read this first it could almost be regarded as an introduction - you would probably be intrigued enough to read the series. As always with Lucinda B's writing, every character has a distinctive voice that is recognisable and utterly convincing. The way she manages to give her French characters beautiful English that is still recognisably French in tone has me lost in admiration. It's a while now since I read the Roxton saga, but I think I'll read it again now - it always was a definite keeper!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Love the audio version just as much, 2. November 2014
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
I read Salt Redux some time ago because I had enjoyed Salt Bride so much. Lucinda Brant creates such believable characters that I confess it took me a while to get up the courage to read about Diana St John's reappearance! As always in Brant's books the period details are satisfyingly accurate and this story has an entirely pleasing ending. I felt sure I would read the book again, as I've read many of LBs books twice. Then I won the audio version in a draw. This was a whole new thing for me, I've always thought that I prefer to create my own voices in my head so I was a bit hesitant to start on this. However, a very long train journey made me decide to give it a go and what a pleasant surprize - the narrator is Marian Hussey and I found her very pleasant to listen to. Her phrasing and "voicing" (if one can thus describe giving characters different voices) are easy on the ear and I was soon absorbed in the story. Best of all, I could look out of the train at the passing scenery of Switzerland and Italy - a definite plus! I can imagine taking an audio book on a long journey again and all of Brant's books are keepers in my opinion. (For more of a similarly excellent standard I recommend Mary Balough and Candice Hern.)

4.0 von 5 Sternen Super leicht, 10. Juni 2014

Once for All Time (Best of Betty Neels)
Once for All Time (Best of Betty Neels)

5.0 von 5 Sternen Gentle romance, 26. April 2014
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
Betty Neels' stories are charmingly old fashioned romances, perfect for undemanding escapism. Themes that come up in all Neels' books are the medical world (she was a nurse), England, Scotland and Holland. The settings are always beautifully described and the characters believable. Although the stories are somewhat similar I find I don't mind at all because descriptions of countryside, houses and cottages, furnishings, cities, cars and clothes are all so pleasaant that it's rather like spending time in familiarly soothing surroundings. Thanks to Neels' medical knowledge the many nurses and doctors in her stories are completely convincing. Her intimate knowledge of Holland is apparent in her descriptions of the cities and the history, and her references to popular Dutch meals and titbits of the language . She gives her readers the same level of fascinating detail in Scotland and England. The books provide a delightful afternoon's read when you need something relaxing to escape to!
