Protecting the Gift: Keeping Children and Teenagers Safe (and Parents Sane)
Protecting the Gift: Keeping Children and Teenagers Safe (and Parents Sane)
von Gavin De Becker
  Gebundene Ausgabe
Preis: EUR 20,52

5.0 von 5 Sternen Life-Saving Book, 12. Mai 1999
Gavin De Becker has done it again! The Gift of Fear, his first book, was incredible. Now with his second, De Becker establishes himself as not only a wonderful writer and storyteller, but as someone who has a major gift to give those of us who are concerned and committed to kids' safety. He imparts practical, sensible approaches to making decisions and judgments about how to keep our children safe. He empowers me when he validates the use of instinct as I'm sure he will any reader. He also inspires and moves me in his vivid and candid account of being physically abused when he was a boy. Protecting the Gift is indeed a gift. Thank you, and bless you, Gavin, for having the heart and soul to write what you know and feel. The world will be better for your commitment to all of us.

Roads from the Ashes: An Odyssey in Real Life on the Virtual Frontier
Roads from the Ashes: An Odyssey in Real Life on the Virtual Frontier
von Megan Edwards
  Taschenbuch

5.0 von 5 Sternen Beautiful and inspiring, 11. Mai 1999
I read a lot. I also am picky about which books I pick to read. They'd better pay off or I put them down. Megan Edward's book was a great choice. I couldn't put it down. She's a wonderful writer. What makes a wonderful writer? I want to get to know her better and I want to see where she takes me. She's funny, she's insightful, big-hearted and she makes me want to read more. She asks, (I'm paraphrasing here...) "What would you do if one day you had no more stuff to tie you down?" She got to find out when her house and all of her belongings burned up in a wild-fire. She, her husband and their Road Dog, Marvin, took off in an RV and found out home is where you say it is.. I know for one thing, if I lost all of my stuff, I'd want Ms. Edwards book with me. What a great read.

Falling Leaves: The Memoir of an Unwanted Chinese Daughter
Falling Leaves: The Memoir of an Unwanted Chinese Daughter
von Adeline Yen Mah
  Taschenbuch

5.0 von 5 Sternen Outstanding autobiography-- a universal & intimate account, 21. April 1999
Falling Leaves left me breathless and more committed to empowering women and girls. It is an astounding account of how child abuse happens in the wealthiest of homes, all over the world even when everything looks "just fine." The author's strength and goodness against great odds is inspiring and is a tribute to the power of spirit. It is also evidence that the love of one person can save a child's emotional life.

In the Land of God and Man: Confronting Our Sexual Culture
In the Land of God and Man: Confronting Our Sexual Culture
von Silvana Paternostro
  Gebundene Ausgabe

5.0 von 5 Sternen Extremely important book, 20. März 1999
Silvana Paternostro is a courageous woman. In her first book, her passionate and committed voice "outs" the hidden bi-sexuality of the "macho" man throughout Latin America. She doesn't condemn homosexuality per se, but the deadly practice of many supposedly straight men who bring home HIV to their faithful and unsuspecting wives. She explores the hypocrisy of men who are ardently homophobic in public, and yet practice homosexuality. This is an important piece in the literature that condemns patriarchy, not only as a stultifying system but lethal, literally, to women. This book will help wake up the sleeping giant of Latina feminism among the middle and upper-classes. Ironically, the tragedy of AIDS may facilitate even more feminist awareness in Mexico, Central and South American, thanks to Silvana Paternostro's ardent commitment to the well-being and lives of her Latina sisters.

Funny Business: An Introduction to Comedy with Royalty-Free Plays and Sketches
Funny Business: An Introduction to Comedy with Royalty-Free Plays and Sketches
von Marsh Cassady
  Taschenbuch
Preis: EUR 18,69

5.0 von 5 Sternen Excellent reference book, 5. August 1998
Marsh Cassady has really nailed all of the forms of comedy in a concise, fun and easy to read way. It's difficult to explain comedy without making it unfunny. Cassady successfully engages the reader with scenes that illustrate how irony, incongruity, absurdity, and other classic methods of tickling our funny bones, work. I originally thought that Funny Business would be a good gift for a graduating senior but soon wanted it for my own reference. I highly recommend Funny Business.
