4.0 von 5 Sternen Great start!, 5. August 2013
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
I loved Gail Z Martin's Summoner books, so as soon as I saw this one I HAD to have it - and I wasn't disappointed. Although I'm not as much a fan of this new series (yet) as I am of the previous one, it's definitely worth reading. The Ascendant Kingdoms make a fascinating new backdrop, rich in history and full of (mysteriously wonderful) character(s). I can't wait to see where this series will take me.

5.0 von 5 Sternen classic theme, revised..., 11. März 2010
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Blue Moon Rising (Darkwood) (Taschenbuch)
Once upon a time, there was a prince who went out to kill a dragon and rescue a princess... only, nothing turns out quite like it's supposed to.

The prince isn't you typical prince. First of all, he's a Second Son who, given a perfectly healthy older brother, is more of an inconvenience to the kingdom than anything else - which is why he gets to go kill a dragon. He rides out on his trusty steed - ahem, make that somewhat cowardly unicorn - knowing full well that everybody would be happy if he died a glorious death-by-dragon. Or death-by -darkwood. Or death-by-demon. Any death, really.

Then there's the dragon, who hasn't eaten an innocent virgin in decades - centuries, even - and has a huge hoard of...well, let's just say it ain't gold. He's not much in a mood to fight the prince, either - he'd much rather be rescued from the princess he seems to have acquired.

Of course, one cannot forget the ever-encroaching Darkwood, where no light but plenty of demons can be found.

And the horde of goblin farmers turned footpads.

And a journey to the end of the rainbow, no less.

Oh, and an entire wing of the Castle that vanished thirty-two years ago and hasnt been seen since.

BLUE MOON RISING is definately one of my all-time favourites, right up there with Blood and Honour. I love Simon R Green's sense of humor. Nobody else could take so many of the classic elements of traditional heroic fantasy (or should I say fairytale?) and twist it into an endlessly funny (and sometimes nightmareishly frightening) tale full of swordfights, intrigues and romance that pulls the reader (me, anyway) in and doesn't let go.

Ever.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Classic epic fantasy, good humor included, 8. März 2010
Although I haven't yet seen this omnibus edition, The Elenium Trilogy is one of my all-time favourite fantasy series. Ever.

It's full of a dry sort of humor that reminds me a little of the more modern "Dresden Files", the "Accidental Sorcerer", or perhaps the classic "Blood and Honour", has a well-thought-out storyline while avoiding the over-plotting that seems to happen rather a lot in fantasy novels. The characters are smart and witty, adventure is ever-present and magic is all-pervasive.

There's Sparhawk, a somewhat reluctant but definitely predestined hero, and his side-kick Kalten, ever good for a laugh. There's the young queen, needing to be rescued, but only once - she's quite capable of getting what she wants, otherwise. There's a young thief destined for greatness, and a goddess who can't seem to keep out of things. There's evil great and small, enemies both mad and cunning, powerful and merely human and an epic quest to save the world...

What more could one possibly want of a classic fantasy adventure story? It definitely makes a nice change from the recently so popular tormented hero, I must say.

A book to read over and over again.

5.0 von 5 Sternen not just for football fans..., 8. März 2010
Ok, I admit it: I bought this book because I liked the movie preview. I'm not normally a reader of biographies, so I wasn't entirely sure what to expect.

I was pleasantly surprised. Michael Lewis writes a fluid story (though I'm not sure I understood half the football history/strategy that found it's way into this book) that's easy to follow even to someone who has no idea about the rules of american football.

The story itself is fascinating, touching in parts and intriguing all the way through, granting the reader a little insight not only into the whole world of college sports (or rather pre-college sports) but also shows how great the gap between the rich and the poor, whatever their respective skin colors, can be. It also gives the reader a peek into the lives of what seems to an outsider a typical well-to-do born-again christian family. This was particularly interesting to me (I'm european, not many born-again christians over here) in that it managed to convey in a very casual and unobtrusive sort of way the beliefs, ideals and convictions of these people.

Well done.

Cross Stitch Jungle: 20 Breath-taking Designs
von Jayne Netley Mayhew
  Gebundene Ausgabe

3.0 von 5 Sternen Beautiful pictures, very detailed!, 8. März 2010
This book is full of beautiful, highly detailed cross-stitch patterns. Definately worth it, though I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for a beginner. The many different shades of color needed to get the proper effect may not be easy to get your hands on (at least they weren't for me), but it's definitely worth sticking to the actual color scheme. There are also several motives that can be taken out of the big pictures, so to speak, for smaller projects.

One thing to keep in mind, however: those who already own cross stitch patterns by jayne netley mayhew beware that some motives do repeat.

All in all, however, definately something to add to your cross-stitch library!!

As with the Transformation books, Carol Berg writes one fine story. I particularly liked Valen - Carol Berg manages to transform the usual tormented-childhood theme into a fascinating family intrigue that leaves nothing to be desired. Here is a hero who only wants to go his own way - and finds himself in the middle of the very tangle of politics and power that he wanted to aviod, all the while tormented by a greater conscience than he thought he had...

I absolutely can't wait for the second book!!

Also, I absolutely love the cover art on this edition...
