Fatal Gift
Fatal Gift
von H. Michael Frase
  Taschenbuch

4.0 von 5 Sternen Fatal Gift Delivers, 1. August 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Fatal Gift (Taschenbuch)
An unseen Kasey Riteman witnesses a brutal murder in the rural countryside surrounding Nashville. Kasey devises a plan to expose the murderer, without implicating herself as a witness, not wanting to prompt the killer (a cold-blooded deviant dubbed "Joeyboy") to seek revenge against her. She has a clever plan, but it quickly unravels in this intelligently written, fast-paced, suspensful mystery from H. Michael Frase.

3.0 von 5 Sternen This Horse Pulls Up Lame Before The Finish Line, 20. Juli 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: A Man in Full (Taschenbuch)
An ambitious undertaking, Tom Wolfe's novel starts by introducing several, very distinct characters, and expertly weaving their stories together. The complex storyline keeps you guessing, blending suspense and humor. Wolfe has populated a world with memorable characters (Cap'm Charlie Croker & his trophy wife, Serena, Conrad, Roger Too White, Ray Peepgass and so many others), that will live on in the reader's memory. Turpmtine Plantation feels like a very real place. Then, with the suddenness of a car wreck, the story lurches to an awkward and disappointing conclusion. It's a crying shame that Wolfe tries to wrap up an over 700-page novel in one chapter using a two-way Q&A conversation. A tremendous let-down...

5.0 von 5 Sternen Terry Kay is a Master Storyteller, 17. Juli 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: To Dance With the White Dog (Taschenbuch)
This is a simple, but hauntingly memorable story that is a eulogy to old age. After Sam Peek's wife of 57-years passes away, Sam is faced with living out his final years thwarting the good intentions of his worried children. He is then visited by a white dog, who becomes his companion for the remainder of his life. Terry Kay shows the reader that no car chases, gun play, casual sex or sadistic rituals are necessary to craft an entertaining and moving story. America's best working author, Terry Kay's lean prose is what literature is all about. Highly recommended.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Death Row Tale, 14. Juli 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Chamber (Gebundene Ausgabe)
A young attorney, Adam Hall, is confronted with his family's history, by defending his racist Uncle, Mississippi death row resident Sam Cayhall. Grisham does a good job depicting life on death row, and the laborious appeals process involved in trying to spare someone a trip to the chamber. Not a fast-paced thriller, but an interesting read.

At End of Day
At End of Day
von George V. Higgins
  Gebundene Ausgabe

2.0 von 5 Sternen Weak Characters, Slow Dialog, 12. Juli 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: At End of Day (Gebundene Ausgabe)
At End Of Day takes far more effort to read than a traditional novel packed with action scenes, and/or tied together neatly through the perspective of a narrator. Chapters alternate with two mob informants reminiscing about their own careers and about the guys they're having to set on fire and maim to persuade them to pay their loans on time. These conversations ramble on and on, over and over. The heavy New England dialect is frustrating to interpret. Finally, these aimless conversations come together to reveal an alliance between the FBI and the mob--I guess this plot twist is supposed to surprise the reader? Poorly developed characters and the dialog technique employed here make this a difficult read.

The Alternate
The Alternate
von John Martel
  Taschenbuch

3.0 von 5 Sternen Compelling Courtroom Drama, 12. Juli 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Alternate (Taschenbuch)
Martel's story of an ex-congressman, connected to the mob, who goes on trial for the murder of his beauty queen wife, grabs the reader on the opening page, but slowly eases its grip as the story predictably unfolds. Defense atty. "Bear" Dickson and Asst. D.A. "Amazing Grace" Harris are well developed and believable. Down on her luck actress, Amanda Keller, is a disturbing portrait, even if the character comes off as a little over the top. Good read, with a couple of surprises, but not all the loose ends are tied up.

Back to the Moon
Back to the Moon
von Homer Hickam
  Taschenbuch
Preis: EUR 7,99

3.0 von 5 Sternen Back to the Moon?...Let's Go!, 12. Juli 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Back to the Moon (Taschenbuch)
Homer Hickam does an excellent job of strapping us into the cockpit and letting the reader experience space flight. His characters Jack Medaris and Dr. Penny High Eagle make an interesting "opposite attracts" pairing. Knowledgeable of his subject (Hickam is a retired NASA engineer), the author does a very credible job of detailing a high-tech world. Some good plot twists and building suspense make this an enjoyable read (even for a non-astronaut).

Guilty as Sin: A Novel (Deer Lake, Band 2)
Guilty as Sin: A Novel (Deer Lake, Band 2)
von Tami Hoag
  Taschenbuch
Preis: EUR 6,99

3.0 von 5 Sternen Guilty of NOT having an Editor, 12. Juli 2000
Tami Hoag's tale of a cold-blooded kidnapper wreaking havoc in a small Minnesota town, has a good plot, some excellent twists and turns, but is a very long-winded and often laborious read. A good editor could have streamlined this story. Prosecutor Ellen North is the well-developed central character of this entertaining and hard -hitting whodunit.

First Blood
First Blood
von David Morrell
  Taschenbuch
Preis: EUR 7,99

4.0 von 5 Sternen Suspense Thriller, 4. Juli 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: First Blood (Taschenbuch)
David Morrell's masterful prose draws the reader into a vortex of suspense. Grabs the reader by the throat on the first page and doesn't let go until the last. You will find yourself pulling for Vietnam vet Rambo, amazed at his cunning and survival tactics. Stallone made a gallant attempt, but there is no way a movie could realistically capture everything in this novel.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Common Sense, 4. Juli 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The One Minute Manager (Taschenbuch)
A practical guide for anyone thrust into a corporate management position. Outlines methods to improve the bottom-line by improving employee morale. Sometimes the approach is overly-simplistic, sometimes a little too new age consultant-speak, but a good, quick read.
