Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Book 2)
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Book 2)
von J.K. Rowling
  Gebundene Ausgabe

4.0 von 5 Sternen Excellent for Muggles and Non-Muggles Alike, 1. Mai 2000
J.K. Rowling has hit upon a tried and true formula and she uses it here to perfection.
The second in Rowling's series about the young orphaned wizard, Harry Potter, starts off similarly to "...Sorcerer's Stone..." the first book. During the summer break between his first and second year at Hogwarts, Potter is subjected to and the brunt of more indignities by the Dursley family, his Muggle-born aunt and uncle and their annoying young child.
As in the first novel, Harry is rescued after a fashion from life in the mundane world and spends his school year at Hogwarts, tracking down the heir of Slytherin who is turning an alarming number of Hogwarts' students to stone.
If there is any one complaint I can make about this book in good conscience, it is that the book is far too similar to the first book in the series. There is very little deviation between the two.
Don't let that put you off from reading this book, or from buying this book for a young reader. It is a very palatable book, exceptionally easy to read and "get into" and hard to put down once you have. Rowling's style is a little bit formulaic, but it's a formula that works!
Once again, this book explores the differences between good and evil and further examines free will and free choice vs. destiny. It's a great children's book in that it teaches children that they can choose to do the right thing even when it seems like they're being pigeonholed or peer pressured into doing the wrong thing.
As I've mentioned in my review of the first Harry Potter book, fundamentalists have decried this series due to the fantasy nature of the storyline. Please don't let this detract you from purchasing or reading the book - it is easily on the level of CS Lewis' "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe" series in teaching valuable moral lessons while being a compelling read. The Harry Potter series of books is also very similar in quality to Madeleine L'Engle's "Wrinkle in Time" series of books.
If any adults have concerns about purchasing this book for a child, I encourage you to read it first. You may find you end up online late at night buying the next in the series, just as I did!

Jonathan Livingston Seagull.
Jonathan Livingston Seagull.
von Richard Bach
  Taschenbuch
Preis: EUR 9,69

5.0 von 5 Sternen Lessons on Flight And Life, 28. April 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Jonathan Livingston Seagull. (Taschenbuch)
Jonathan Livingston Seagull is a very brief, easily readable tale about a young seagull who is always stretching beyond his limits. Never satisfied with being "average", Jonathan wants to fly faster, wilder and better than any other seagull. Over the course of this short story Jonathan is enlightened about his own existence and teaches other gulls like him.
This beautiful, heart-rending story is a page turner and a quick read. It is also well worth the time spent reading it and is a good story to keep nearby for reading again and again. I found that this book changed my perspective greatly. It's a very uplifting and heartening work.
It's also interesting to note that Richard Bach wrote this story for a fellow friend of his, a pilot named Jonathan Livingston who died in the 1970's.
This is a book about limits, precisely, about never letting them hinder you. It's a terrific story.

Women

5.0 von 5 Sternen Breathtaking, 13. Februar 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Women (Gebundene Ausgabe)
Annie Leibovitz has created a compelling work that showcases women in all of their dimensions, not just in flat pictures of beauty.
Some of the images are haunting; some are disturbing, some are glamorous, some are awe-inspiring. Every one is worthwhile, even the ones that are harsh.
Overall, this is an excellent portrayal of women and I highly recommend it.

Take all those Zen, Yoga and Feng Shui books out of your shopping card and put this one in! The true answers to life lie in "The Angry Clam"! Erik Quisling's genius and the endearing tale of a small bivalve mollusk's quest for enlightenment is unforgettable and timeless.

The Unofficial Guide to Miami and the Keys (Frommer's Unofficial Guides Travel Series)
The Unofficial Guide to Miami and the Keys (Frommer's Unofficial Guides Travel Series)
von Bob Sehlinger
  Taschenbuch

2.0 von 5 Sternen Not Enough of the Keys, 3. Januar 2000
I bought this book hoping for great insight on Key West (an infinitely more desirable and intriguing locale to write about than Miami) and was sorely disappointed.
I really enjoyed Sehlinger's Unofficial Guide to WDW and frankly, expected more from this book. A lot more.
To be fair, most guide books don't pay nearly enough attention to the Keys, instead imparting more information than I ever wanted to know about Miami, a city that I've come to deplore.
It might be me; I just don't get the hype and focus on a sullied, soulless, filthville of a town like Miami over the glorious, exquisite keys.
At any rate, if for whatever unfathomable reason you really want to spend lots of time in Miami, this book is for you. If you're looking for Keys information, look elsewhere (though I haven't found a good alternative myself).
Just be forewarned that there's a good reason MIAMI has a huge typeface on the front and "the Keys" is shrunk down in size. It's a damned shame.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great gift for a fan (and his girlfriend who still reads it), 3. Januar 2000
I bought this book for my boyfriend and he LOVED it. It's easy to read, filled with interesting tales and a must-have for any Groucho Marx fan. I, while not a Marx Brothers fan for all my life, found myself picking up the book again and again. Very enjoyable. Very easy to digest. It was read by us both within a couple of days of his unwrapping the gift.

5.0 von 5 Sternen An Excellent Tutorial on the Principles of Flying, 3. Januar 2000
Don't let the dated looks of the book throw you, this is a masterpiece! It explains Bernoulli's principle and other lifesaving concepts in great detail. The author has a great sense of imagery and really provides some in-depth perusal of numerous techniques. It's an absolute must-have for any pilot.

One of the greatest pop culture references of the late 1900's has to be William Wegman's puppies. These images resound with character and delighted me (and I'm a cat lover!).

This book didn't lack punch and was an incredibly easy read. I highly recommend it for travelling and other light reading.
