I only gave them 3 stars because they are so unbelievably difficult to get on. I use Shimano shoes which according to the manufacturer you to buy 2 sizes too big for them to fit properly - for me this is size 48. So ordered the correct overshoes from Mavic to fit size 48 and found myself cursing and double checking all the details as they are so fantastically tight to get on. I had to spend half an hour pulling them on to the shoes and left them to stand like that for four days so they would stretch a bit. They are still very difficult to get on, but at least they do go on - just.

After Googling this, it seems lots of people have the same problems. Some even refer to it as a warm up before the ride. So be aware of this if you buy.

They don't stop you from getting wet and cold, just delay the inevitable. So I suppose in that respect they do their job. But it is a lot of money to pay for the trouble.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Don't get those gloves wet...., 14. Januar 2016
Physical feats and triumphs of the mind and body flood the Internet and television in our modern times. Watching bits of the Tour de France, Red Bull Rampage or Olympic Weightlifting is effortless and mostly 'uneventful' for the viewer. It's only when you actually practice something yourself and establish a scale of difficulty that you begin to truly appreciate just how good and how unbelievable some peoples' achievements really are. My personal beacon of reference started in early summer of 2015 when I decided to tackle riding my bike a bit more seriously, pushing the distance, the pace and the elevation with each ride. Failing at adding frequency to intensity, and consequently drawing my own learning curve and voyage of two-wheeled self-discovery. And so it was with great enthusiasm that I began reading Helen's book. Because she is one of those people making it all look too easy.

Told in the first person and based on her journal, A Siberian Winter's Tale is pleasant cocktail of stories and personal insights that hardship and challenging environments often tend to bring out in people, for example:

"We have been taught to fear death - health and safety and a compensation culture. We have been taught to revere immortality - the dream of eternal youth sold to us by airbrushed models through anti-ageing creams, super-foods and diet pills, making us feel guilty about any small pleasure in life that is only a risk to longevity when taken in excess. But those who fear death become scared to live."

Her descriptions were also beautiful:

"As I cycled out of town, tiny flecks of ice crystals floated in the air, sparkling like glitter. It was magical and mesmerizing like walking through a fairy tale. No one else took any notice."

I admired her courage as a woman alone in a very remote and male dominated environment. And despite several unsavory encounters she maintained her sense of proportion in terms of her attitude towards the truckers, miners and so on that she continually met along the way. That said, I did find myself wondering if as a man you would be treated the same way. Russia is after all a very macho country, where men save face by being 'strong'. Even so, she was often invited to tea or rest without the other person knowing she was a woman, because of her face mask and hat so I don't know how true this would ring. Still whether experiencing this as a man or a woman still takes some serious mettle - a sense of which the book definitely conveys in the small daily struggles like getting out of your sleeping back to pee when it's minus 40 degrees.

A lot of people will be able to identify with this book and Helen's stories and observations. I had to laugh at her frustration at constantly being stopped by all and sundry which would trigger a vicious circle of getting cold, having to add layers which meant getting too warm again when cycling, having to stop to remove a layer only to be interrupted again by a passing vehicle! At the same time though, this was a testament to the kindness and generosity of the people there - a kind of solidarity against the elements.

I'll leave you with this nice observation from Helen:

"Nomadic lifestyles intrigue me. I am as a cycle-tourer, a kind of twenty-first-century nomad. What is it about this transient way of life that is so compelling to those restless among us who are unable to remain content when settled?...But my time in Siberia was not being spent amongst the traditionally nomadic people; it was spent with the nomads of the modern world - the truck drivers and migrant workers and with settled people."

I enjoyed it, you might too!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Very well written and researched. Definitely worth reading., 13. November 2014

I really enjoyed this book and not just because I am into training. The book touches on a number of related subjects and research that I also like to follow. Best of all, are the strong arguments in favour of high frequency training - the material and quotes from John Bros was very valuable too. And reading about the work of Robert Sapolski insipired me to buy his book.

The whole subject of over training seems to be massively misunderstood and exaggerated in modern training literature > YouTube > forums and so on. And this is going on to such an extent that you have people with a bit of DOMS who are complaining of over training! So, all-in-all this book was very timely in helping to dispel those myths, which no doubt will still be propagated by those who like to cling to excuses.

Most people who like training books probably won't like this one. It is not about the nuts and bolts of how to squat everyday, nor is it really about squatting everyday...it's much more about applying principles in your approach to training and searching for understanding of yourself. And this it does using science and experience gathered throughout human history.

Probably one of the few books I would actually read again. Great job.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Content is top, but formatting is a MASSIVE flop..., 28. September 2014
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
I bought the book and discovered a massive discrepancy between the stated number of pages in the product description and what was actually in the book - and this even allowing for Amazon's disclaimer of discrepancies due to conversion and compression etc. So after looking into it and checking overall content, I was dismayed to find that much of the stated content in the product description was actually missing. After a live chat with Amazon this was resolved, so that all the books are now in the package. That was one problem resolved, BUT there are a ton of formatting errors which Amazon promised to look at. For example, the pages on accessing and using the online calculator are a cryptographer's wet dream. The major issue I have with the package is that there is no overarching contents list. So what you have is literally a haphazard collection of converted PDFs. This is pretty piss poor of Amazon, especially at this price. I am sure that a bit more time and care spent on the editing and conversion would have produced a much, much better final product. I have informed the author, who assures me the files were all fine when uploaded, so the ball is very squarely in Amazon's court. Please Amazon fix these issues as the content is great and I am sure there would be many more willing customers if the formatting wasn't so piss poor.

I mounted mine on the windscreen and all was well at first, but then it started to charge intermittently which led to the discovery that it is a bit sensitive to bumps and heat. Annoying considering the price, hence the 3 stars.

Top, but no way the battery lasts 2 months. Not in normal use anyway. Perhaps if you only read every other Tuesday and Thursday for about 20 mins.

Bit like car manufacturers with their fuel economy claims.

Very good value compared to other covers. No chemical smells, despite it being "vegan leather" as they call it, lol whatever happened to PVC leather look, or vinyl. Vegan leather!

Anyway, fits like a glove, sturdy with a good auto activate magnet thingy. Great.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Functionality top, hardware quality flop, 17. Juni 2014
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
The FRITZFOns just keep getting better. Tonnes of cool functions, although most of them I really don't believe anybody would use, like the radio function. But the quality of the hardware is poor, super light weight and plasticky. So much so, as to be teetering on the edge of one drop and that might just be that as they say.

Our main reason for buying was the fact that it works seamlessly with the Fritzbox media server as opposed to other phones that have to be configured manually for what seems like hours on end and then you still have to enter your directory manually ahhhhhhhh!!! No such problem with this phone, turn it on, box is recognized, phone directory copies itself. Done.

If they would just improve the build quality of the handset then I would be a very happy camper.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Content okay, but Kindle format average at best, 17. Juni 2014
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
The content of this book is great as many other reviewers and countless chess websites already confirm. Mind you, most of the reviews I notice are for the hardcopy paperback version.

My problem is the fact that the Kindle version of the book is full of exercises and accompanying chess board diagrams which although great, are extremely difficult to see (illegible) in the Kindle version. And what's worse, the click and hold feature on the Paperwhite that usually reveals the zoom functions for reading tables etc. is not available! Increasing font size does not make any difference either, so it's pretty frustrating trying to follow the examples and/or do any of the exercises.

This detracts from the overall impact of the book and definitely lessens the impact of the content. It would be nice if they could fix this formatting (error?) and reissue to all Kindle owners who have already purchased the book.
