5.0 von 5 Sternen This makes you think, in a very entertaining way!, 20. Juli 2017
What to say about this book without giving too much away?
Usually, I do not really like books written from the narrator's perspective (first person singular); furthermore, anything too philosophical will after a while just make me skip passages (I know, I am horrible).
However, none of these applied here. The story, the narration, everything was just too interesting to even think about not liking the type of narration, or to be even slightly bored by too much philosophy.
We have Dion, the main protagonist and storyteller, waking up in a desert, with no clothes, no recollection of who he is or why he is there, just a car with a written instruction (and some bottles of wine) to drive it, and follow the road until the end. Any transgression would be punished swiftly, and harshly.
The reader follows Dion on this road, and together with him discovers who he is, why he is in this situation, what happened before, and what he wanted to happen originally. All this - as usual! - narrated in such a way that the reader is glued to the pages until the very end.
I also thoroughly enjoyed the numerous footnotes, which according to the author were not necessary to follow the story, but gave such a lot of more information and insight into Dion's way of thinking, it would be a pity to have missed them.
I could go on and on, explaining why I loved certain passages or footnotes, or dialogues, but that would be giving too many spoilers.
My advice? Get this book, read it and follow the developments together with Dion, having the same clues as he has, and follow the road as far as it goes....and perhaps a little bit further?

3.0 von 5 Sternen Nicht uninteressant, 14. Juli 2017

4.0 von 5 Sternen Good start of a series, 13. Juli 2017
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
Charming story about a run-away bride landing in the middle of texas, in a small village, and being rescued by big handsome cowboy... a little twist to the reasons for running away makes this story more interesting.
Sympathetic characters, mostly realistic, an interesting plot and a - sorry to be repetitive - charming narrations style make this first book of the series a very good start, and a very tempting one to buy the rest of them.
Great editing regarding grammar and spelling errors, what annoyed me a little bit were the time-jumps, in lack of a better word, on new chapters. Trying not to put spoilers in here, but one minute she's rescued and they're looking for a dog, end of chapter, next she's somehow at a garage or something, changing clothes and retrieving her car, no mention of her rescuer, if they found the dog and how they got there until much later in the chapter. And little things like that were repeated throughout the story - cannot give more excamples, otherwise I would put a lot of spoilers in here.
Apart from that, though, I really liked this story.

SM with the stress on complete dominance over the female character, hardly a plot to speak of around sex scenes bordering on the pornographic - sorry, not to my taste.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Not quite convincing, 6. Juli 2017
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
A bit slow going for my taste, but a good plot and sympathetic characters, in an interesting setting and timeframe. It is always difficult to be the second wife, and it was sometimes heartbreaking to see the struggles our protagonists had to endure to overcome the many obstacles.
However (sorry, but there is a however): although the author has thoroughly investigated the time period, some of the dialogues, events, meals etc. made me go: "hmm really?" I am not sure, but I think some of it could not have happened this way in America in the first half of the 17th century, although I am the first to admit I am not an expert.
Another thing that bothered me a bit was that nowhere could I find out the ages of Barnaby and Mary (unless I missed it somewhere). Both are quite settled in their religion and beliefs, and I would assume Mary was under 20 years of age? Barnaby mid twenties? Just a guess. The language as well seemed to jump between nowadays and 17th century. The shadow of the first wife hanging over their marriage seemed to be a bit overbearing at times, and the to-and-fro between Barnaby and Mary a bit much occasionally, especially considering their surroundings and the difficulties they must have faced in the New World. Again- tables, letters, and other items from England to the New World in a sort of regular intervals? Really?
I loved the information that the author actually told the story of her own ancestors, and it must be awesome to still find articles, writings, even landscape names related to your own several-great-grandfathers.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great plot and protagonists, very very well written, 1. Juli 2017
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
Great mix of paranormal romance and cop story, reminding me a bit - not quite as good, and without the vampire protagonist - of J.D. Robb's "In Death" series.
The story in a nutshell: Tough Cop Sydney meets Vampire Kade on a case, and whilst trying to find and catch the murderer, the air between them is sizzling, very reluctantly so on Sydney's side.
The protagonists are brilliantly described, we have a good plot, and a narration style which keeps the tension up - both between the protagonists and chasing the murderer - enough so that I found it very very difficult to put this book down before having read the last word!
A brilliant start to a series, and I cannot wait to get my hands on the 2nd book, Luca's story.
Definitely a recommendation from me.

2.0 von 5 Sternen good plot ideas, badly implemented, 28. Juni 2017
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
Okay what can I say? The plots as such, the ideas for the stories, those were good, interesting and promising. The protagonists, for most of the part, were interesting as well, sympathetic (at least until the females lost all brain cells because the male hero smiled at them, and became damsels in distress).
The implementation of the ideas? Absolutely not to my liking, and isn't it a good thing tastes are a very personal matter.
It may have been the fact that I had the electronic version of these 4 books, and something went wrong with the settings. Here, the formatting was just plain awful, and made no sense at all. Words, whole sentences seemed to have been missing. All four stories had trust issues as one main ingredient, so to say, and in one paragraph our female protagonist has a big problem with her male counterpart, literally in the next paragraph or sentence just a smile reduced her to a puddle of hormones and made her forgive everything??? I had the impression that something important was missing to explain her reactions.
The protagonists themselves, although not un-sympathetic, and with quite interesting character traits, started to act quite irrationally and made the stories sometimes difficult to read - I actually rolled my eyes fairly often at them and thought "oh gosh, drama queens".
The hot bed scenes? Oh forget that - they were put in like an afterthought, you know, like "oh 20 pages, I have to write another bed scene". The descriptions of the "acts" themselves actually made me chuckle: the choice of words used to describe what should have been hot, steamy and passionate was everything but - I have seen more passion reading a tractor manual or legal statements!
And let's not go into grammar or spelling please, that was the stuff for nightmares.
On the whole, this is nothing I would recommend, sorry to say, and it only escaped the "absolutely awful" mark because firstly, I did like the ideas behind the stories, the actual plots (or what they could have been), and secondly, and most importantly, although I did not like the books, I do appreciate the work the author put into them, and her sharing them with the readers.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Fun, heartwarming, hot and very entertaining, 23. Juni 2017
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
I expected a normal romance story, very predictable: struggling farm/ranch owner holds out against the rich guy who wants to buy all the land and build some shopping centre on it, they bet that he couldn't hold out two weeks on her farm - and the rest, as they say, was history.
Yes there was all that, but also more: very sympathetic characters with some quirks and personal baggage playing into their reactions, and with a depth that was surprising; side characters that were as interesting as the main ones; a good plot and storyline; a good fluent narration style, with humorous elements - in short, a great story which I enjoyed reading very much.
And yes, I will try and get more of this Southern Alphas series, and of the author.

5.0 von 5 Sternen heartwarming story, likeable characters, and good storytelling, 18. Juni 2017
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
n absolutely lovely story, heartwarming, with sympathetic characters, a great plot and setting, and great storytelling on the whole.
Although I think there were some inconsistencies, and my gut feeling is that some dialogues and/or incidents could not have happened this way in this time period, it was soon overlooked thanks to the great quirky characters, and the narration with a lot of subtle humour.
I had the feeling that some sentences were missing a word or two, but then again, the author might have tried to put the local way of speaking, or the one of that time period in it, which I most likely just wouldn't have understood.
This is the third book in a series, and the author managed to get just enough of the contents of the first two in here, so that a reader could understand nuances of what was going on, and why, without this being a rehash of the other books - well done indeed.
On the whole, despite some minor issues I had with this book, I absolutely loved it, and just have to get my hands on the first two in this series, and definitely on more book of this author.
Thank you for some great reading time.

Cinderella story put into today, and an absolute joy to read.
Lots of likeable characters, with enough quirks to make them interesting as well, lots of humour and witty dialogues, a great plot and a fluent and funny narration style make this a story you just cannot put down until the very last word.
Yes, the character traits of the females in the Brand family are at times a bit exaggerated, perhaps, and the thought might cross your mind that we have stereotypes here - but! it all comes together just right, so that you actually can see them right in front of you, and see similarites with people you actually know.
There were a handful of minor grammar and spelling errors, but not enough to distract from the story.
The only flaw I found? It ended! I will definitely get more of this series and this author.
