The author is someone who's worked with many abusive men as a part of their court order. The book is divided in four main parts. One deals with the abusive man's way of thinking. Two describes how the abusive man acts in a relationship. Three is about the abuser and other people. Four talks about changing the abusive man.

I found part one and two particularly helpful. In the end it's pretty clear what constitutes abuse and what doesn't. And once you realize who you're dealing with there is little doubt in your mind about what to do next.

This is a story about a married woman who falls in love with a younger man during a vacation in France.

I think that Brian Moore did a pretty good job for a male author dealing with such a sensitive matter. He is realistic about the reaction of her environment (this is the 70s after all!), but he also has fairly progressive views for that time and he remains remarkably non-judgmental throughout the novel. In particular, I like how he strives for the maximum amount of insight with the least amount of words.

The book is mislabeled. It really should have been called "My Dad and I". It's mostly filled with random anecdotes and way too much information about the author and his very elderly father. There's also lots of trivia/statistics about the biology of growing up, growing older and dying, along with some nice quotes on the subject. I was so busy flipping pages of uninteresting material that I must have missed the good parts.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Story of an untypical teacher and an extraordinary class, 6. Juli 2014

Duane was given a class filled with children that no other teacher wanted to teach. Luckily he was also allowed to set his interesting teaching ideas in practice. Thus he was able to show us that few kids are truly hopeless. Great value for this price!

I read this book in one sitting. Who needs perfect when you've got honest and entertaining. The truth is, Linda's story is at the cutting edge of our time. More and more middle aged people are finding themselves in her predicament and she shows how life can still go on even if you think it can't. What I liked the most was the lack of whining and her ability to laugh at her self.

There's many novels along such lines that fail miserably in what this one manages rather well. It reads just like any other historical romance but with two mouth-watering heroes instead of one!

4.0 von 5 Sternen The blueprint of success, 20. Juni 2014
A young mother leaves her children behind in order to fulfill her dreams. Sounds like a terrible person, doesn't it. However Erin McGraw manages to make Nell's decision completely understandable and not only that. The reader also gets a great account of how a person can succeed in life. Simply put, it all starts with doing what you love and doing lots of it.

There's a big list of self-help books that are supposed to convey the same thing but none of them do it as well as this story does. That alone is worth the price of the book and for that alone I was more than willing to overlook the weaknesses that cropped up along the way, particularly towards the end.

The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne (New York Review Books Classics)
The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne (New York Review Books Classics)

5.0 von 5 Sternen Mindblown, 20. Juni 2014
Classics are often equated with boring. This would be a tragic mistake to make, especially here. The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne turns out to be the reader's equivalent of a seven-course dinner. The portrait of the ugly spinster living in the forbidding, oppressive Ireland of the 1950s is masterfully written, comprehensive and understanding without degenerating into pity. The other characters are wonderfully alive as well and real, very real. I cannot stretch this word enough.

Moore also manages to weave in some excellent social commentary about the issues his country was facing at the time. Judith Hearne is not just a woman here, she's Ireland herself, slowly groping her way out of the dark middle ages and being called crazy for it at first, only for us to celebrate her as Galileo later on.

Calling Invisible Women: A Novel
Calling Invisible Women: A Novel

3.0 von 5 Sternen Enjoyable, 20. Juni 2014
Middle-aged Clover finds herself becoming invisible in the solid sense of the word. This leads her into a series of adventures and helps her realize that she has been taken for granted for quite some time now, from others as well as herself.

I enjoyed the book. There's none of the urgent, dramatic tones of chick lit that deals with finding the happily ever after. This is the best case scenario some 25 years and a couple of kids later. The book is peppered with interesting observations on matters like adult children, career transitions, changing priorities. However I can see how it might bore someone who is just starting out in life.
