Refuge: An Unnatural History of Family and Place
Refuge: An Unnatural History of Family and Place
von Terry Tempest Williams
  Taschenbuch
Preis: EUR 9,99

5.0 von 5 Sternen A refuge becomes a sanctuary, 10. Januar 2000
As the Great Salt Lake rose to submerge and destroy the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, grief rose and submerged Terry Tempest William's spirit with the destruction of her mother and grandmother by cancer. The gradual regeneration of the Refuge with the subsiding of the lake parallels the regeneration of her spirit and the subsiding of her grief. But the pain and the scars remain and transform. Terry is no longer an accepting trusting Mormon daughter but a searching questioning activist after her tumultuous emotional experience. One wonders if the gifts of awareness and sensitivity are worth the price of the pain endured. The Refuge becomes a sanctuary for the returning birds and Terry's returning spirit. No more moving piece has been written about the folly and ultimate tragedy of human intervention in the environment. From the nuclear testing of the 1950s to the manipulation of the level of the Great Salt Lake, there is much to learn about the long term consquences of our short sighted acts. Everyone should read and reread and pass on this book.

Eiger Dreams: Ventures Among Men and Mountains (Roman)
Eiger Dreams: Ventures Among Men and Mountains (Roman)
von Jon Krakauer
  Taschenbuch

4.0 von 5 Sternen too much thin air?, 4. November 1999
"Justifying idiocy" I thought when I first read about ice climbing. As the mother of two boys I am always trying to figure out the WHY of male behavior. Krakauer has given me more insight into the male facination with extreme sports than any other source. He goes beyond mere descriptons of the thrill to examine the WHY. JK provides a peek into the male psyche for those of us fortunate enough not to posses one. Some of the adventures beg credulity - too much hypoxia Jon? But I'd give this book 4 pitons up.

Knight in a White Stetson (Silhouette Intimate Moments)
Knight in a White Stetson (Silhouette Intimate Moments)
von Claire King
  Taschenbuch

5.0 von 5 Sternen raunch on the ranch, love it!, 4. Mai 1999
Claire King has hit paydirt in the desert with the creation of Calla and Henry. Yes, this is a formula romance plot but such sassy intelligent genuinely funny dialogue perk this up to a five star read. Since I live a few miles down the road from Claire (although I don't know her personally) I guarantee the details are authentic Idaho stuff - from the tight Wrangler's, expressions like "puffed up like a sage-hen", poking fun at Californians, and using "spud" as a term of endearment. If you think romances have covered it all, try this spudkicking romp.

The Perfect Storm: A True Story of Men Against the Sea
The Perfect Storm: A True Story of Men Against the Sea
von Sebastian Junger
  Taschenbuch

4.0 von 5 Sternen cold facts stirred into an emotionally hot stew, 1. November 1998
this story begins with the grim details of the life of a fisherman but escalates into a gripping tale of the hapless vicims of a perfect storm. I liked the mix of "story telling" with the factual descriptions of the physics of wave action, wind patterns etc. I'm still shivering and I finished it two weeks ago!

Divine Secrets of the YA-YA Sisterhood
Divine Secrets of the YA-YA Sisterhood
von Rebecca Wells
  Taschenbuch
Preis: EUR 14,80

5.0 von 5 Sternen painful truths embellished with fairytale details, 28. September 1998
I am drying my tears after finishing the last page of the saga of the Ya-Yas. The universal truths of a mother-daughter relationship are woven into the rich fabric of Catholic Lousiana. There is laughter here in the details but tears in the message. Wells delves into psychoanalysis without uttering psychobabble. She arrives at truths without making pronouncements. She provides catharsis without using a purgative. I am an enlightened daughter for having read this book.

You Belong to Me
You Belong to Me
von Mary Higgins Clark
  Gebundene Ausgabe

4.0 von 5 Sternen Good fun reading for August, 23. August 1998
Rezension bezieht sich auf: You Belong to Me (Gebundene Ausgabe)
I am a first time MHC reader. I was pleasantly surprised and entertained. The plot moved along and kept me guessing. The characters were more overviews than in depth but OK it's August and I'm on the beach getting a little light headed from the sun. Dr. Susan is rich and attractive enough to keep a reader interested in her outcome. Some foreshadowing was repeated enough to make me think, "OK when is .... going to appear at the .....?" No sex, violence or foul language is a plus. But then, I like oatmeal rather than chorizos for breakfast too.
