5.0 von 5 Sternen "For the dead travel fast", 20. März 2017
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Dracula (Kindle Edition)
Surprisingly "Denn die Toten reiten schnell" or "For the dead travel fast" is more than an opening line to this tale of love in the dangerous moon light. After watching several Drac movies and a few Nosferatu's, I pretty much though I had a handle on the genera. Little did I know what a wonderful world of mystery and suspense that Bram Stoker opened up for me.

The story is told mostly third party though the papers, diaries, and phonograph recordings (on wax cylinders) of those people involve in a tale so bizarre that it almost defies belief. The general story line is that of a Count that plans to move to a more urban setting (from Borgo Pass to London) where there is a richer diet. There he finds succulent women; something he can sing his teeth in. Unfortunately for him a gang of ruffians (including a real-estate agent, asylum director, Texas cowboy and an Old Dutch abnormal psychologist) is out to detour his nocturnal munching. They think they have Drac on the run but with a wing and a prayer he is always one step ahead.

Of more value to the reader is the rich prose chosen by Stoker as he describes the morals and technology of the time. We have to come to grips with or decide if we can perform the rituals that are required to eliminate vampires verses the impropriety of opening graves and staking loved ones. The powers in the book differ from the movie versions in that they are more of persuasion and capabilities to manipulate the local weather. At one point the Dutch Dr. Van Helsing, is so overwhelmed by a beautiful vampire laying in the grave that he almost forgets why he is there and may become vamp chow.

All in all the story is more in the cunning chase. And the question as to will they succeed or will Dracula triumph. Remember "For the dead travel fast."

There are some technologies that just cannot be improved on. You're looking at one of those technologies now. Whoever invented the p- 38 had a sharp idea and has made food available for the world.

My first encounter with this device was in Vietnam 67 -- 68. In those days, we ate C. rations. The two and dispense of tools were the AR-16 and the P-38. On the AR-16, you could use the flash suppressor to break the bands on the C. ration's cases. Then use the P-38 to do the final work of opening cans. Now days we have MRE's or meal ready to eat. Therefore, there is no longer a need for an AR-16. However, the P-38 can still perform its legacy option in the field or in the office.

Do not wait until you need this device; buy it now and be prepared.

I do not like to think of what may be upstream. But I am taking no chances.

I used a similar product in Vietnam. Now I keep this stuff with me for those back country sojourns and at home in case I am not paranoid.

Keep an eye on the expiration date. Try not to get addicted.

Ferrara Pan Candy Company is the only Atomics I know and they have been around since the beginning of time. They are consistent in quality.

I buy around 140 each week for people a t work. Some people just live on these animals. Others just see how long they can suck on them before changing to the other side of the mouth. It looks like people are going around with fat jaws. When the red coating wears off it seems that they just get hotter. And you can hear the tell tale sound of people crunching to get it over with. Then they come back for more.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Takes more time thinking about cleaning than cleaning, 19. März 2017
These critters (Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Extra Power Home Pro) are very versatile in cleaning projects.

I used them for many functions such as the shower floor that repels most cleaning products and brushes.

My favorite use is to remove sticky labels on discount books without scraping through the covers.

I have not paid much attention to how fast the eraser disintegrates as I am more interested in the end result.

The Call of the Wild

5.0 von 5 Sternen Buck realizes his potential, 19. März 2017
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Call of the Wild (Taschenbuch)
Gold was found in Alaska, the rush to obtain it required a strong constitution and many dogs to do the work that horses usually did in the states. The environment bread harsh attitudes. Also in the testing of one's mettle one finds their true potential.

Buck (a dog that is half St Bernard and half Shepherd) goes through many lives, trials, and tribulations finally realizing his potential. On the way he learns many concepts from surprise, to deceit, and cunning; he also learns loyalty, devotion, and love. As he is growing he feels the call of the wild.

This book is well written. There is not a wasted word or thought and the story while building on its self has purpose and direction. The descriptions may be a tad graphic for the squeamish and a tad sentimental for the romantic. You see the world through Buck's eyes and understand it through his perspective until you also feel the call of the wild.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A tad dated but still useful, 19. März 2017
I did not know that they could pack so much into one book. By the way this book is big and heavy.
1. Mathematical Tables
2. Mathematics
3. Mechanics of Solids & Fluids
4. Heat
5. Strength of Materials
6. Materials of Engineering
7. Fuels & Furnaces
8. Machine Elements
9. Power Generation
10. Materials Handling
11. Transportation
12. Building Construction and Equipment
13. Shop Processes
14. Pumps & Compressors
15. Electrical and Electronics Engineering
16. Instruments and Controls
17. Industrial Engineering
18. Environment Control

The sections do not do justice to the almost infinite about of information and tables contained in this volume; for example under digital computers there is a table on Binary-Octal-Dismal conversions. Interestingly enough they left off Hexadecimal.

It makes for good reading if you want to fill in information that you never heard of. The handbook is best suited for people that already have a question so that they can understand the answer.

Over the years some people become more fun and interesting. On the other hand some become staunch and passionless. Seems that Lottie picked the latter to marry. One day at her club she sees an advertisement to rent an Italian villa for a month she shows this to a friend Rose and offers to share the cost.

This leads to four women with different backgrounds sharing the cost of a great adventure at the beautiful Italian villa "San Salvatore."

The story is well written and was made in to a good play as it has all the elements of understanding and misunderstanding needed for a good play. Even some explosive scenes.

There all the characters, looking for a retreat from life, find each other again; for some the first time. You will find yourself wanting it to join in.

Do not overlook the two movies with the same title.

It is well written. The idea of a storyteller in the story is not unique but very effective. We could ponder over the word darkness for quite some time. The best way to ponder is with Cliff's Notes. Personally I wanted him to get on with it. I guess I was a little impatient for the action and the conclusion. If it hadn't been for cliff notes I would have missed haft the things he was implying.

A merchant company is missing an agent Kurtz, and Marlowe must find him. Traveling though harsher environments than he imagined possible he may have found what he was seeking. As with many of this type of epic the physical distance or direction is not as important then the transformation it plays on ones soul.

I missed this book somehow in school. The reason I started to read this book before actually I actually became immersed in it, was to see how close it came to the movie. No not the movie you are thinking of. "Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death" (1988). The film was shot primarily in the avocado groves maintained by the University of California at Riverside (UCR), which the university uses for horticultural experiments. Adrienne Barbeau is Dr. Kurtz.
The horror.....the horror.....

5.0 von 5 Sternen This book is a fascinating view of textiles through time., 19. März 2017
At first, I had to get used to the female centric writing however, that is the thrust of this book. Not really. The title says it all "Women, Cloth, and Society in Early times."

With the lack of reading time people have nowadays, I found it necessary sometimes to scan books looking for the individual items that I am interested in or need. However, I found Elizabeth Wayland Barber's writing style and information so intriguing that I could not miss a word.

I purchased this book mainly because I was interested in the history of textiles. I dabble in spinning and weaving having a few different spinning wheels and looms myself. I was surprised and delighted to find that I got more than I paid for. Dr. Barber not only puts the craft in a historical perspective but also gives us a more personal view s she describes her experience such as reconstructing or emulating the early crafts. I also learned quite a bit of the origin of the technical words I used but never thought to read about them. One great plus of this presentation is that no matter what background your are coming from there is always something new to learn even if it is looking at the same thing from a different angle.

An added bonus it does not distract from the original purpose of this book is the insertion of linguistics as word origins parallel crafts and help us understand better, when different things were invented or discovered and where they were invented or discovered. I also own several books on the origin of words because this also intrigues me.

My copy of the book has monochrome diagrams and plates. I hope that one day the book will be published with color plates and diagrams. I found that the reader really needs to study the chart of the Main chronological periods covered in this book is it helps to keep everything in a time line perspective.

On a technical note, I found the footnotes and the resource section helped to go beyond this book in many different directions.

Thank you Elizabeth Wayland Barber for giving me a useful reading time and a new perspective on "Women, Cloth, and Society" not only in Early times but today.
