Viktoria Tolstoy is an experienced vocalist in the gray zone between jazz, rock and pop with the great gift of making cover songs her own. And injecting the songs with meaning and feeling. Here she has selected a collection of songs that have been associated with famous movies. From classics like "As Time Goes By" and "Smile" to newer hits like "Kiss From A Rose" and Sarah McLachlan's "Angel".

Backed by an excellent Swedish trio with the inventive guitarist Krister Jonsson, bassist Mattias Svensson (Jan Lundgren trio) and her husband/boyfriend Rasmus Kihlberg on drums. With guestspots from pianist Iiro Rantala and the great Nils Landgren who has also produced the record.

Smooth and relaxed music, yes, but also with artistic depth and genuine, contagious emotion.

Joe Zawinuls Erdzeit: Interview für ein Portrait
Joe Zawinuls Erdzeit: Interview für ein Portrait
von Robert Neumüller
Preis: EUR 22,00

5.0 von 5 Sternen Excellent portrait of a visionary musical genius, 2. März 2017
This is a small but wonderful book comprising of the interview segments from Robert Neumüller's same titled documentary about Zawinul. With the great man himself, his sons, Wayne Shorter, the beautiful Sabine Kabongo a.o.. Originally planned as a 75 year celebration but this got somehow overshadowed by the death of Zawinul's lifelong partner Maxine and the man's own illness and subsequent death which made some of the the later filming an additional burden for Joe.

Neumüller has succeded in making the enigmatic Zawinul dive deep into his spiritual views and offer many profound words about spirituality, life, inspiration. Painting a portrait of a man who was not only an incredibly talented and visionary musicians but also a great human being and a true 'wise man' with a cosmic vision. (And the same goes for his Weather Report partner Wayne Shorter - no wonder they made some of the best music ever).

The book somehow centers on Zawinul's last recording sessions which resulted in the excellent album Absolute Ensemble. Chronicling his work with the ensemble's leader Kristjan Järvi and his relentless pursuit of perfection in all dimensions of the music. And since made for Austrian television it also dives into Zawinul's feelings for his native country and especially Wien. A true World citizen Zawinul was at the same time a man very aware of his cultural roots.

Lots of great pictures and exquisite design makes this book a pleasure to read and who can help shedding a tear reading Joe's last words to his lifepartner? Essential for fans of Zawinul and for anyone interested in the mysteries of music and inspiration. (The interviews with some of the participants are given in their original English form but are also translated to German at the end of the book)

4.0 von 5 Sternen Memories from a life with Osho, 1. Mai 2015
Another addition to the growing litterature by Western disciples telling about their life with a Master, and the growing number of books about Osho.

The strength of Punya's book is undoubtedly in her very vivd almost impressionistic descriptions of nature, places and events. Obviously recollecting is her main interest rather than reflection which I must say I found somewhat disappointing from the founder and editor of the excellent webmagazine Oshonews. And like most authors in this genre she seems to lack the professional writer's ability to condense events and draw the essence out of situations. Instead we get very long accounts of how the procedures were in the kitchen in Poona and how specific types of buildings were constructed in Oregon which I doubt can interest manyb people - unless ofc they were there themselves.

The book is well-written, Punya defintely has a gift for words, and rather complex in composition with several narratives unfolding at the same time, mainly the story of her life with Osho while he was alive and diary like entries from her life after that not least a visit to Poona in 2001.

Punya comes a cross a a typical - some would say ideal - devotee. Working for and being in the close proximity of her master seems to be the essential in her life. In fact she states that when being summoned to a meeting with some of the feared 'moms' in Rajneeshpuram the thought of being send away from the place where "worse than death". Whereas critical thoughts and reflections seem foreign to her mind. Rightly she focusses on all the amazing feats of the commune in Oregon - I know many who loved being there - but that she did not have any grievances about its demise is unusual and probably a testament to her unwavering trust/faith. And strange in a book written many years later that she does not at all mention the waves of upheaval through the sannyas world in wake of these events. or try to draw some lessons from it. And that is perhaps the great flaw with this book in general that the writer does not seem willing to look at things from a later/higher perspective - which ofc could be said to be an attempt to leave the conclusions to the reader.

I have read 'better' books about Osho like Veena's "Glimpses Of My Master", Shunyo's "Diamond days With Osho" or Niranjan's "I Leave You My Dream" but if you were there Punya might give you an interesting vehicle for time travel.

To release this splendid concert shortly after the death of Jack Bruce is definitely a fitting tribute to the genius of the man. Showing not only the legendary bassplayer, but also the singer, composer, keyboardplayer.

With this concert you really get an almost complete overview of the highlights of his career up til then, although any Lifetime or "Escalator Over The Hill" material is missing. There is blues dating back to his days with Graham Bond. Tracks from his glorious solo album trilogy from the 70s: "Songs For A Tailor", "Harmony Row", "Out Of The Storm". Free jazz numbers with only him, Dick Hecstall-Smith and Ginger Baker (perhaps not the tracks people will hear most of the time). And a powerful Cream tribute - which also marks the start of BBM. This their first show might have been their best ever performance, such a tangible feeling of joy amongst the three, even Ginger looking so happy.

Lots of distinguished guests. Besides the already mentioned there are people like Bernie Worrell, Pete Brown, his longtime lyricist here singing "Politician", Clem Clempson, Simon Phillips, Gary Husband. And Maggie Reilly dueting with Jack on the gorgous ballad "Ships In The nIght", a song that should and could have been a major hit.

A show with so many musicians and rotating line-ups could have been a mess, but at this event everything functioned smoothly, all held together by the powerful musicial vison(s) of the man at the center: Jack Bruce.

And as always with Rockpalast well filmed, good sound etc..

5.0 von 5 Sternen Still delivering after all these years, 25. März 2014

Although best known for his stint with the legendary powertrio Cream perhaps Jack Bruce's strongest time was in the first half of the 70s. Producing an unsurpassed trilogy of strong solo-albums ("Songs For A Tailor", "Harmony Row", "Out Of The Storm") and playing on groundbreaking albums like Carla Bley's "Escalator Over The Hill" and "Turn It Over" (Tony William's Lifetime).

Since those golden days Jack has certainly continued making music of the highest calliber without quite reaching the same heights. So it's nice to be able to say that here at 70 he has made a strong musical statement, despite some serious health problems due to a near fatal liver transplantant in 2003.

Jack has always been a restless soul and a true multitasking musician. Not only a groundbreaking bass virtuoso but also an excellent keyboardplayer. And having one of the finest voices in contemporary music. A searching musical mind mastering almost all genres from avantgarde to heavy rock. True to form with "Silver Rails" he has made yet another diverse outing, helped by friends like Uli Jon Roth, Robin Trower, Cindy Blackman Santana, John Medeski a.m.o.. And reunited with long time partner lyricist Pete Brown. An album consisting of 8 new tracks of ususal high standard plus to 'oldies': "Keep It Down" ("Out Of The Storm") and "No Surrender" ("A Question Of Time").

How time will judge this album compared to the masterworks of his younger days who knows? But he certainly shows - like recent releases from Paul McCartney, David Crosby, John McLaughlin - that there is indeed life and creativity after 70.

Tripping the Bardo with Timothy Leary: My Psychedelic Love Story
Tripping the Bardo with Timothy Leary: My Psychedelic Love Story
von Joanna Harcourt-Smith
Preis: EUR 15,24

5.0 von 5 Sternen what really happened to Timothy Leary, 30. Dezember 2013
No doubt Joanna Hartcourt-Smith has lived a life rather far removed from 'normal'. Grown up in jet set, money-aristocratic milieu. And telling a story that could sound like a Jackie Collins novel. Filled with sexual abuse - starting with her mother's chauffeur when she was 11 - a grandfather that killed her grandmother and got away with it and lots of aimless drinking, drug usage and money spending. But doing it with an honesty and integrity that lifts it far above just trivial sounding clichés.

In 1973 she hooked up with Timothy Leary who definitely knew how to 'score', telling Joanna that he ahd dreamed her up while in prison and that she was "the most intelligent woman in Europe". And initating her to the deeper aspects of LSD.

While Leary's own CONFESSIONS OF A HOPE FIEND "Learytells the story of his escape from jail and his time in Marocco Joanna's book continues from there meeting him during his stay in Switzerland. And following him on his hopeless and unrelaistic journey seeking refugee in Afghanistan.

From there on the story gets a nasty turn when Leary was 'kidnapped' and returned to jail and Joanna did all she could to get him free. Finally adopting the strategy of cooperation and turning snitches/informers. All done in a haze of drugs and sex. She could be called Hardcore-Smith. Apparently she never said no to any man at least not if he were powerful and influential enough. But also the many sexscenes are depicted in an honest way.

Even though she explicitly says she is not out to defame Leary he do come across as a person addicted to drugs and unable to rely on his inner strength without them. In the end selling out to save his life. After which he denounced both the hippie-movement, the sixties counter culture and the spiritual quest and spend the rest of his life as nothing more than an entertaining has-been.

A very interesting and well-written book that should be required reading for anyone interested in the turbulent and dreamy 60s. And for anyone who still believes Leary was innocent in the charges of snitchery.

This book by a former sannyasin's only value seems to be that it paints a portrait of one of many immature seekers flocking to the mystic Osho (aka Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh) in the 70s. Underlining the fact that Osho was perhaps the first master to give unconditional sannyas to everyone interested without requiering any preparations or qualifications from the aspirant.

Which ofc meant that many sannyasins did not realize that the initiation was only preliminary and that true sannyas required an inner revolution. Therefore we got people like Boerner whose main interest was having sex with as many partners as possible. In his case without much love and often a strong element of violence, he seemed to like hitting his women. And imagining themselves enlightened just because of some passing experience in a therapy group.

Besides of that Boerner openly states that he had no real interest in Osho, sleeping through his discourses and never taking the opportunity to have a personal conversation with the master. And when recommended to do a meditation group spending his time trying to sabotage it.

And then he rose to money and fame making a porn movie starring sannyasins....

5.0 von 5 Sternen Heartfelt sannyas memories, 4. Dezember 2013
Disciples telling about their master has become quite a literary subgenre with works ranging from the embarrasing to the sublime. And ofc for a true disciple nothing is more important than his/her master so no wonder so many like to tell their stories.

This book is the loving memories of an Indian sannyasin devoted to the controversial mystic Osho. Having been around Osho from the start the book contains invaluable information. Painting a lovefilled portrait of Osho as both human being and master.

Where many Western sannyasins tend to emphazise their sexual adventures and in general putting themselves at the center of the story this is a book about devotion and the workings of a Master.

A very beautiful book recommended for everyone interested in the mysteries of initiation and devotion.

As one would suspect from a superb songwriter and photographer this a work of quality written in an easy but literary style. Funny but also profound when that is needed.

A rather amazing tale of a guy born and raised in utter poverty in postwar UK and then realizing his teenage dream and more with The Hollies before being turned on by the likes of David Crosby and Mama Cass to mindexpanding drugs and the hippie lifestyle.

We get the intimate story of his failed love relationship to Joni Mitchell, the wild and crazy times surronded by lots of gorgous and willing girls, the snorting of insane amounts of coke and the total downfall of Crosby in the 80s. And some interesting reflections on Neil Young and his erratic, selfish behavior that might unsettle some fans of St. Neil. On the other hand he paints a lot more sympathetic pic of Stills than Crosby does in his two autobiographical books.

The only problem is that book is too short, the time from Crosby's return from jail up to now being very fragmentarily dealt with. As if albums like "Live It Up", "After The Storm", "Looking Forward" did not exist not to mention the brilliant Crosby and Nash.

All in all a wonderful book and not only a must-have for CSN(Y) fans but for everyone reflecting on the rock life, the enviroment and the muse of pure Music.

This book really falls in two parts. One being the journey and search of the author. His many spiritual experiences and his many disciplehoods. No doubt revealing a Western seeker of unusual dedication and (german) stubborness. All this described in a typical male way, only once(!) does he mention that he actually has a female partner. Quite unlike most similar book by women devotees where the feeling part and the love affairs usual take up a good deal of the pages :-).

While that story can be a bit overwhelming and slightly tiredsome the main part is essential and important interviews and encounters with some of the most influential contemporary spiritual figures and gurus. Osho, Ramesh Balsekar, U.G. Krishnamurti, Papaji, Andrew Cohen a.o.. And unlike the docile Premananda Facetten des Erwachens: Kostbare Dialoge mit 16 indischen Meistern über die Lehre von Sri Ramana Maharshi and Europäische Meister: Einzigartige Dialoge mit 14 Europäischen Meistern über Sri Ramana Maharshis Lehre Wer bin ich? Madhukar is not affraid to raise serious questions and objections. Forcing many of these well-known beacons to reflect deeply over their teachings.

Rather surprisingly and disappointedly the book ends with Thompson embracing the rather rigid traditional advaita vendanta. But perhaps this suits his intellectual disposition.

Anyway an essential collection of deep and profound spiritual meetings.
