Schade.

1.0 von 5 Sternen What a waste of paper, 12. Januar 2016
Stay away from this book! I had the chance to have a look at that book at our university's library. And honestly, it's a complete waste of paper. Not only is the book just bundling what you can already read in various ROS tutorials. No, the author even managed to make something worse than ROS tutorials are in a sense that
- he explains even less (you need the tutorials as they are complete)
- the English is way below to what you already expect from an undergraduate
- the examples just don't work out; also, the code is not in sync with what is provided on the book's github, so the explanations in the book are essentially useless

If you really wanna learn ROS, read the tutorials, but don't support this book.

Definitely not worth its money. Got the cup this morning. Upon filling it with hot water for making a tea it just cracked.

Althgouhg the book provides a convenient and easily graspable introduction to Bayesian Data Analysis, the author sometimes misses to provide concise discussions/interpretations of the figures he is generating, and, even worse, sometimes to clarify the purpose of a specific figure. Maybe he should use less examples and discuss the remaining ones in more detail. Thus -1 star.

How shall one be able to grasp the contents of a book if not even the author itself seems to be capable of doing so? Apparently, at some point the author lost track of his original intentions, which is clearly visible as of numerous repetitions and obvious gaps which only confuse the reader while reading. Another big problem is the one that the author does not comply with standard notation and uses concepts which are obviously not established in kernel methods (e.g., the LSP, which, after a thorough investigation, is only mentioned by this very author but nowhere else in kernel methods literature). For an interested reader. I suggest to stick with Shawe-Taylor and Christianini or Vapnik's original work.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Tribute to themselves, 9. Oktober 2013
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
Having read about this book at various places, I thought it might be a fruitful addition to my library on hacking literature, especially regarding databases, not least only due to the list of authors. The first chapter is nicely written and somehow informative, however, as soon as the authors start writing on specific database implementations, the book becomes more or less a tribute to themselves. Not only that each chapter is far too short, and does not really contains anything new, further issues are...
1. describing a database within no more than 10 pages is futile...
2. listing already known attacks is nothing new to be published...we have sources for that
3. it's nice that the authors have discovered some stuff, but they should stop remembering us with a book all the time...
4. if you print source code, ever heard about explaining/pretty printing it for a book?
5. the contents actually cover only a small percentage what is possible in hacking databases, in fact, they cover what the authors know and have done/found out, but nothing more - a book should attempt to be complete and sound, at least in its topic...the authors should force themselves to accept other people's work
...
Just stay away from that book and save your money. The internet again is your best friend regarding the ridiculously treated topics of this book.

There are two issues coming along with this book, which actually should be kept in mind before buying:
1. The authors heavily promote BURP suite (developed by one of the authors) to be used as THE tool for web application testing. However, most of the described functionality is online available with BURP suite Pro, which can be bought for a nice 249 bucks with a single user license.
2. The authors "gently" provide only labs, where one is advised to test the various described attacks. However, as in the case with BURP suite, this does not come without additional costs...

Under the bottom line, the book does not contain real insight knowledge (use Google and you will acquire the same knowledge, probably at the most in a more readable and technical manner). What it contains are numerous ads for BURP suite and attempts to get more money from you! Stay away from buying and do what a researcher does, research already available sources of knowledge, i.e., the Internet and its numerous discussion boards!

@Edit: The further you get in the book, the more yackety-yak it contains. The authors try to avoid conciseness by all means. Sometimes the book acts as counting sheep. Don't buy!
@@Edit: Maybe the authors also should try to get a little bit up to date and not use Windows 98 and IE 5.1 when showing a screenshot of a successful attack. This somehow makes them cockamamie...

Personally, I think this book struggles with three problems (from the point of an advanced user):

- a lack of theoretical background necessary to be provided in the book,
- too less (or nearly no) examples at all, and
- a desperate need to use OCaml as often as possible, even inside proofs (at this point, there has to be made the distinction whether the author proofs some OCaml implementation, where the use of OCaml fragments is justified, however, it is not justifiable in proving theoretical results regarding logic and the like itself).

I also cannot understand how such a book shall help beginners, as, like already stated, the book lacks numerous theoretical results and illustrative examples, necessary for beginners to get used to the matter (i.e., resolution, BDD, Tableaux).

All in all, the book gives a good overview over the field of ATP and its various aspects, and additionally provides implementations for what is discussed in the book. Thus, it's ideal for advanced users/experts in the field of ATP as a reference book, but not as a handbook, as claimed in the title.
For sure, beginners can read the book, yet their experience will be sobering, as they need additional study to understand the matter, presented in this reference book.

From my point, the author should have made a clear distinction between the theoretical background and implementation specific stuff covering OCaml (e.g., by splitting it up the various chapters in two main subsections, respectively). The book would be cleaner and easier to read, especially from a beginner's point of view.

The provided implementation is nice and thorough, however, it requires some preliminary effort to get used to OCaml (especially as Appendix 2 misses some basic explanations, e.g.: the difference between "use/load" and "open" in OCaml... - thus, the provided code is not usable from scratch, the reader for example first has to find out to prior to using the provided implementation to LOAD and OPEN the numbers module, which is not mentioned anywhere clearly, e.g., in case of chapter 1).

Other than that, the book is a also good source for improving one's OCaml skills.

The Art of PROLOG: Advanced Programming Techniques (Logic Programming)
The Art of PROLOG: Advanced Programming Techniques (Logic Programming)
von Leon S. Sterling
  Taschenbuch
Preis: EUR 74,99

2.0 von 5 Sternen Too expensive and unstructured, 18. Juli 2013
I must say, I probably expected too much from this book. First, it's not worth its money, as you can find more or less of the contents in different research papers. And second, what puzzled me is the enormous amount of (sometimes useless) examples, which are printed in one chapter, but actually needed some chapters later.
Despite giving an advanced overview on Prolog, the book is a pain to read due to being forced to turning over and back pages more or less all the time. For this amount of money, one at least expects a more fluent reading experience, and besides, what's the cost of reprinting some example? I think it'd been covered by the price...
