Oracle PL/SQL Programming: Guide to Oracle8i Features
Oracle PL/SQL Programming: Guide to Oracle8i Features
von Steven Feuerstein
  Taschenbuch

3.0 von 5 Sternen Technical vs Political, 28. März 2000
I was kind of surprised to see that his political views (which I was aware of via his website) made it into his book. More surprised that O'Reilly allowed them into the book, but then again...if they didn't then there would be no free speech for Steven.
His political views aside, I enjoyed all the little nooks and cranies (especially NDS - Native Dynamic SQL). NDS is more like a big chunk instead of a nook and crany. This has saved me hours of extra coding. Also the other new features are excellent. More Java is definitely apropo, less politics. Though I am not as offended as most reviewers of the book, I do agree with them. Especially about Mumia (sp?). Leave politics out of it. That's why I gave it 3 stars instead 4 or 5.
Looking forward to your next book Steven.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Excellent Encyclopedia on Oracle Packages, 28. März 2000
Oracle should just have O'Reilly publish all of their documentation. Though I haven't had a need to use 85% of Oracle's packages, the ones that I have read are thoroughly documented. Even the author (Steve Feuerstein) mentioned that there are even MORE builtin packages that he didn't put into his book. Word is that he may add more of them.
Excellent book.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Great reference for syntax, 28. März 2000
Being a pocket reference it could still use an "index" in the back of the book. But other than that it's great for non-beginners who forget the syntax of an Oracle Built-in package. Of course if you want more detail then get the full blown version of the book also by O'Reilly & Associates publishing.

4.0 von 5 Sternen All it needs is an Index!, 28. März 2000
An index would make this pocket reference 5 stars. The TOC - (Table of Contents) is helpful but an Index would be better in addition to the TOC.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Misleading and Disappointment (otherwise good), 28. März 2000
As my title suggests, I was disappointed in seeing that 85-90% of the book was about the author's product (3rd party library of PL/SQL packages). So if you have not purchased the software, book is not useful. Only the first 3 chapters are about packages, the rest about PL/Vision.
I am a HUGE fan of Steve Feuerstein's books, but this one was a disappointment. If he takes those chapters out then it would've been 5 stars, but I can only give him 2. Sorry Steve.

5.0 von 5 Sternen The TRUE bible for PL/SQL programming (not the one by Urman), 28. März 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Oracle PL/SQL Programming (Taschenbuch)
I recommend this book wholeheartedly for beginners as well as veterans of PL/SQL. Especially against the Oracle Press book by author Scott Urman. That book (though it covers the basics), it does not give you the tips and tricks or insight as does Steve's book.
The O'Reilly series book is well crafted, with excellent examples. The style of writing is humorous as well as straight forward. And it is a companion amongst other Oracle books by O'Reilly. O'Reilly Publishing seems to know Oracle better than Oracle Press knows itself.
