This is the first complete field guide to all butterfly species on Australias mainland and its remote islands.

Written by one of Australia's leading lepidopterists, it is stunningly illustrated with color photographs of each of the 416 currently identified species. There is also a distribution map for each species on the Australian mainland.

It covers the five major family groups: Hesperiidae, Paplionidae, Pieridae, Nymphalidae and Lycaenidae, as well as the family Riodinidae, which has but a single species in Australia.

The introduction covers adult structure, classification, distribution and habitats, and life cycle and behavior. This is followed by accounts of each of the 416 species, giving common name, scientific name, and other names (if any), as well as details of behavior, habitat, status, and larval food plants. Accompanying each species is a distribution map, and photographs of the upperside and underside of both male and female specimens.

The book also contains a checklist of all species, a list of entomological contacts, a glossary, a bibliography, an index of common names and an index of scientific names.

Michael F. Braby has been collecting and studying Australian butterflies for more than 35 years. He is a Visiting Fellow at the Australian National University and Chief Editor of Austral Entomology. He is particularly interested in the conservation, systematics, taxonomy, biogeography, biology and ecology of diurnal Lepidoptera and has published extensively in the field.

Ein ausgezeichneter Feldführer mit hervorragenden Zeichnungen und Verbreitungskarten zu jeder Art, mit Hinweisen auf ähnliche Arten (Verwechslungsgefahren) u.v.m.
Mit diesem Buch sollte es möglich sein, fast jeden in Australien gefundenen Schmetterling eindeutig zu identifizieren (sofern man alle notwendigen Kennzeichen erfaßt hat bzw gute Fotos gamcht hat). Die Bildtafeln sind so gut, da macht schon das Durchblättern Spaß!

I bought this book in preparation for my first visit to Australia so cannot comment on its accuracy in the field. However, having written a field guide myself [Mountain Flowers and Trees of Caucasia], I feel qualified to say something.

A field guide must fit the pocket or knapsack and be light enough to carry all day; Michael Braby's book does both. It has 340 pages, soft-back, measures 21 x 15 x 2 cm and weighs 700 grams. The paper is tough enough to stand reasonable wear.

There are 40 pages of preamble and introduction which clearly and thoroughly describe the life-cycle, basic anatomy, behaviour and distribution of Australian butterflies. The habitat photos are particularly useful for a new-comer to the continent. A check-list, glossary and indexes to common and scientific names complete the book.

The 270 pages of descriptions cover all species recorded from Australia. Text is on even-numbered pages (left hand side) and illustrations are opposite. This is particularly useful when the beginner hasn't a clue where to start (in spite of the introduction) and can flip through the pictures, praying for luck, inspiration or even recognition. There are mostly three species per spread.

Individual descriptions include clear, full-colour photos of male & female, upper and lower surfaces. Text pages have coloured common names (you would discover how useful this is when using a field guide that doesn't), distribution maps and flight seasons of northern and southern populations where appropriate. The text itself is clear and thorough.

All in all, this is a brilliant book.
