Now, with Seeing Voices, Dr. Sacks takes us into the world of the deaf, a world he explores with the same passion and insight that have illuminated other human conditions for his readers everywhere.Seeing Voices is a journey: a journey first into the history of deaf people, the (often outrageous) ways in which they were seen and treated in the past, and the new understanding that started to dawn in the eighteenth century; and a journey into the present situation of the deafa situation which, all too often, is still one of misunderstanding and mistreatment.

Dr. Sacks writes of how he has come to see deaf people "in a new light, as a people, with a distinctive language, sensibility, and culture of their own." Indeed, it is only in the last ten years that the extraordinary and beautiful visual-gestural language of the deafSignhas been fully recognized as a language, as linguistically complete, rich, and expressive as any spoken language, a language with its own distinctive basis in the brain. The one overwhelming peril for the deaf is to be kept from achieving language competence of any kind, to be denied access to both Sign and speech, and that tragedy is completely preventable by early exposure to Sign.

Sign is also social and cultural. It lies at the heart of the many manifestions of "deaf consciousness" in the past twenty years, among them the remarkable uprising of the deaf students at Gallaudet University in 1988. The revolt gained international attention and showed the world decisively that deaf people have "come of age" and no longer want to be treated as "disabled." Dr. Sacks gives a vivid personal account of the revolt and ponders its implications for the future. All his encounters in the course of this exhilarating journey raise issues of surprising depth and richness which, though of paramount interest to deaf people and all concerned with them, also extend powerfully to the human condition in general.

Dr. Oliver Sacks was born in London in 1933 and was educated in London, Oxford, California, and New York. His concern has always been with individuals, as they cope with extraordinary neurological difficulties, and lately this concern has widened to embrace communities, such as the deaf, and their collective and creative adaptations to biological predicaments. Dr. Sacks lives in New York, where he is Professor of Neurology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

A Treat for Language Enthusiasts

Oliver Sack's awe for the signed word is contagious, and, if I weren't already learning sign language, the book would have convinced me to start. I found it gratifying to see Dr Sacks had already turned his keen acumen to sign and that more than 20 years ago! As always, his knack for asking all the right questions amazes me, and his attempts both to find answers and to confront the unanswerable are humbling and inspiring. He also has an enormous talent for making his reader want to delve further into whatever subject he's treating, and many of Seeing Voice's references are now on my next reading list!

Es ist ein sehr interessantes Buch über die Geschichte und Sonderstellung von gehörlosen Menschen. Oliver Sacks schafft es, wie immer, den Leser mitzureißen und ihm einen ganz anderen Blick auf die Dinge zu geben auch wenn es an der ein oder anderen Stelle etwas langwierig ist.

Ein Muss für jeden, der sich mit Gebärdensprache auseinandersetzt, oder generell mit Geschichte/der Behandlung von Menschen, die nicht der Nor entsprachen. Es wird sehr bildlich Dargestellt wie sich was nach und nach zum besseren und auch wieder zum schlechteren änderte, bis wir endlich hier angelangt sind und sign language (zumindest in meinem Land - und das erst 2005!!!! - ÖGS, und in sehr vielen anderen Ländern) tatsächich als Sprache anerkannt wurde. 2005 ... es ist ein wunderbares Hörbuch, angenehm gelesen und ich bin sehr begeistert und erschüttert zugleich. Undtraut euch Gebördensprache zu lernen, oder in Kontakt zu treten mit Gehörlosen/Schwerhörigen - sie freuen sich!! :-D

I concur with my colleague Kex86, this is an excellent mediation on what it means to think.
Sacks acknowledges the substantial Deaf (with a capital 'D') political movement that feels deafness is not a disability, but a completely different way to experience the world. The unsurpassed richness of Sign -- and the thought patterns supported by it -- will cause many a "deafness-impaired" hearing person to give consideration to this view.
As always, Oliver is erudite, compassionate, witty and insightful. A delightful and thought-provoking book -- in ANY language.

Few people really understand Deaf culture and the Deaf Community. They think they do but unless you identify yourself as Deaf (with a capital 'D'), I don't believe you really do. I was therefore intrigued to read Seeing Voices by Oliver Sacks, mainly because he was hearing and until he started researching for this book, had little understanding of the topic matter. However Mr Sacks, in my opinion, has managed just that. The book is quite heavy in part and the reader needs to jump backwards and forwards between the narrative and extensive footnotes that appear at the bottom of a good many pages, but in doing so, nothing escapes the genius of what he writes. I should add that I myself are hearing and simply move at the edge of the Deaf Community as a CSW. This was the first book that I read by Oliver Sacks and I have since become a massive fan of his work.

This is a deeply interesting book which should be read by anyone interested in language, and in sign language and the Deaf in particular.

It has its faults; three sections are rather bolted together but the information is clear, there are many interesting side notes that seem to take up about half the book and Sacks has found a real empathy with the deaf without losing objectivity.

My only real criticism is one that the author can't do much about. It was written in the 80s and while it is still very stimulating and thought provoking I now want to know how the situation of the (American) Deaf has progressed in the last quarter century and I'm not sure where to find out yet.

My own interest is that I live in rural Northern Uganda and I come across pre and post lingually deaf folk who have no real way of communicating. Their awareness of the world and ability to think are severely restricted but education in Uganda Sign Language is available if only the connections and parental will can be engaged. So I am seeing the 'native' state of the deaf: isolated, vulnerable, sometimes abused. Its like Europe a few hundred years back.

I thought this might cover more about BSL. Instead, it's mostly about ASL with just a reference to BSL. Disappointing therefore as buying it as leaving present for a BSL learner. It also arrived with a bent back cover.

Still, looks like an interesting read.

Deaf-signing language is a true language

Oliver Sacks wrote this book in 1989. In his preface he writes that three years before he "knew nothing of the situation of the deaf". So this book is in many ways a chronicle of Sacks' own journey of discovery. Its main thesis is that the signing used by deaf people is indeed a fully fledged language with its own grammar and catalogue of nuances and styles. So, for example, if two or more deaf-signing people meet who have no spoken or written language in common, say American and Japanese (his example), within a day or two they are communicating fluently. The second half of the book, a chapter titled "The Revolution of the Deaf", is devoted to tracking a "revolution" at a university for deaf students who insist that the top academic positions should be occupied by deaf academics. Oliver Sacks champions this cause, becoming, to my mind, a touch uncomfortably evangelical: does he lose some objectivity? Nonetheless, "Seeing Voices" displays Sacks' trademark combination of compassion and deeply analytical insight.

A wonderful and insightful book, dont think you can read it quickly. for me it was full of concepts about deafness that i had never concidderd and had to take time to mull over to realy understand. normally i could have read this in a day but instead it took me a month long journy to truly apreceate evrything contained in this wonderful book.
