Bravo Eric Emanuel Schmitt.

Omar Sharif commentary in English

Monsieur Ibrahim und die Blumen des Koran - Große Kinomomente [Import allemand
]
This DVD edition was produced for the German market. Along with the DVD, a 10 page booklet with notes about the film and interviews with actor Omar Sharif and director François Dupeyron is included. This booklet and all cover notes are in German only. The DVD has a German and a French audio track, and optional subtitles in both languages. A word of warning: there is no English audio track, and there are no English subtitles for the film.
The huge surprise was the feature-length commentary track with Omar Sharif, which is not mentioned in the product description! And his commentary, interestingly, is in English. This alone may make this DVD interesting for fans of the late Omar Sharif.
The film itself is a coming of age film set in 1960s Paris. It follows the friendship of a teenage Jewish boy and an elderly Turkish Sufi Muslim shop keeper in a poor neighbourhood of Paris. The acting is outstanding. Omar Sharif delivers one of his best performances ever as Monsieur Ibrahim, and Pierre Boulanger is quite amazing as Momo in what is his film debut.
Highly recommended, but knowledge of German or French is required to understand the feature film.
Edit: I see that this review now also appears with another (also German) DVD version of the film which may or may not include the same bonus features as the one I purchased (see attached photo).
