Qualitativ unfassbar schlechte Ausgabe eines Meisterwerks, hier ist nichts remastered

Um Missverständnissen vorzubeugen: diese Rezension bewertet natürlich das Produkt, nicht den Film.
STALKER ist mit Sicherheit eines der ewigen Meisterwerke der Filmgeschichte, der wäre mit 10 von 5 Sternen immer noch unterbewertet. Die aktuelle BluRay-Ausgabe von CURZON / ARTIFICIAL EYE jedoch ist eine bodenlose Frechheit. Suggeriert wird, dass diese Ausgabe die 2017er Neuabtastung von Mosfilm enthält (dazu später mehr), die Wahrheit entspricht einem mit Super 8 im Kinosaal gefilmten Bootleg. Bild- wie tontechnisch absoluter Müll, jede VHS- oder DVD-Version älteren Datums ist dieser Veröffentlichung überlegen. Hier stimmt nichts, von der Farbgebung bis zum knackenden und rauschenden verzerrten Ton. Da hilft auch kein kleines Booklet als Dreingabe. Wer unbedingt einen physischen Bildträger besitzen will, sucht nach der Mosfilm Doppel-DVD mit immerhin remastertem (und remixtem) Ton, da sind auch die Interviews aus der Artificial-Eye-Version schon drauf enthalten und es gibt auch deutsche, wenn auch sehr fehlerhafte Untertitel.
Aber am besten spart Ihr Euch das Geld für diese Abzocke und die ganzen traurigen Ausgaben eines grossartigen Films und sucht auf youtube nach der russischen Neuabtastung, offiziell eingestellt von MOSFILM und mit neu übersetzten, ausblendbaren Untertiteln (in deutsch!). Macht Euren besten Rotwein auf und geniesst diese neuabgetastete Fassung des STALKER, der Unterschied ist schlichtweg unfassbar!

Ein mysteriöser Ort. Die Zone. Man sagt die Zone ist eine Prüfung, und wer sie besteht, dem erfüllt sie einen Wunsch. Ein Stalker ist hier ein Kundschafter, er führt dich auf deiner Reise.
Eine Reise ins Nichts? Wie entstand dieses "Nichts" und ist es nicht viel zu gefährlich dort hin zu reisen? Ist das sinnig?
Das müssen sich auch die Pioniere gefragt haben die einst aufbrachen, einen neuen Seeweg nach Indien zu finden.

Ein Abenteuer, fast schon lautlos, so langsam bewegt es sich fort.
Es startet an einem verlorenem Ort in Sepia, und dann wird alles grün.
Leben wir in der Hölle und fürchten das Paradies?
Eine Umkehrung der Gezeiten. So wie der Fisch an Land ertrinkt, so ertrinken wir im Meer.
Ob es nun nur in unseren Sinnen besteht, oder einem Korpus aus Glas innewohnt.
Das ist die Frage die uns Antreibt.
Und ist es echt? Das ist die Frage die wir uns dabei stellen.
Der ganze Film ist ein vergessener Ort. Eine Welt versteckt in einer Wiese aus Wildkräutern und Brennnesseln.
Ein eingesäter Blühstreifen, wie die verheilte Narbe auf einer tiefen Wunde, umgeben von grauem Fleisch.
Man hört selten etwas über diesen Film, und falls doch, dann meist in einer fremden Sprache.
Stalker hat gute Dialoge, und er stellt gute Fragen.
Trotz der beinahe gänzlichen Abwesenheit von Spezialeffekten ist Stalker äußerst fesselnd und stimmungsvoll in Szene gesetzt. Er ist auch wunderschön und nur das Anschauen für sich gesehen ist ein Erlebniss wie es die meisten anderen Filme schon übertrifft.

I believe that I had actually seen some of this film before, and was unfortunately fooled by an internet reference to a "sci-fi classic."
This film could conceivably be billed as a "fantasy" fim, which is possibly even the same genre.
It has no "sci" in it, though.
Basically you have three guys stumbling around in a sunken, swampy junk yard, mumbling incoherent "philosphical" ramblings, with no action at all. There is nothing attractive about the setting, the characters, or the themes.
The director has no understanding of what MOVING PICTURES are even about... if there's one classic way to abuse the medium, it is with long, static images that bore the viewer.
Never forget: cinema is about MOVING pictures. If you want static sets and dialogue, go to the theater.
Can't recommend unless the viewer is really stoned and thinks of him/herself as a philosopher.. then, go for it!

In der Zone userer menschlichen Seele

Wie kann man die menschliche Seele oder unsere Existenz erfassen oder beschreiben?

Ich bin fasziniert wie Tarkowsky mithilfe von Hilfsmittel, wie den unbeschreiblichen Planeten in Solaris oder wie hier in Stalker mit der Zone, dies tut!
Dabei entwickelt er immer auch eine spannende Geschichte, die ganz und gar nicht langweilig ist. Die Hilfsmittel oder Metaphern sind dabei, genau so wie unsere Seele auch, immer rätselhaft, nicht greifbar bzw. unberechenbar.

Schwer verdaulich ist, dass Tarkowsky immer düster bleibt: In der Geschichte die er beschreibt, in den Dialogen, in den Bildern die er zeigt und vor allem im Ausblick der möglichen Zukunft seiner handelnden Personen. Eine heftige Kritik an einer kraftlosen Gesellschaft!

In Stalker sind es fünf sehr unterschiedliche Personen und die Zone selbst, die uns einen tiefen Blick in unsere Seele gewähren. Nehmen wir die Frau des Stalkers: Sie begehrt ebenfalls Zugang zu diesem mysteriösen Ort, wo alle Wünsche erfüllt werden. Dabei: Würden nicht alle ihre Wünsche erfüllt werden, wenn sie ihre Tochter, die doch ihrer Meinung nach verkrüppelt ist, annehmen würde und dadurch erkennnen könnte, was diese wirklich ist?

Das vorliegende 4:3 Material ist nicht umwerfend. Teilweise gibt es Schwankungen in der Helligkeit, feine Grautöne gibt es nicht, helle und dunkle Töne saufen generell ab.
Trotzdem läßt sich der Film gut schauen! Das Schwarz-Weiß und später die Sepiafärbung ist Stilmittel. Die deutsche Tonumsetzung, sowohl in Qualität und Dialog, ist meiner Meinung nach sehr gut gelungen.

Es wurde hier schon von einen anderen Rezensenten zitiert: Großes Kino der anderen Art!

Last of the Summer Wineski

Ever wondered what a dystopian 'Last of the Summer Wine' would look like set in the Soviet Union and shot for a budget of 500 rubles? Here we have three undirected individuals who head into the allegedly dangerous alien 'Zone' to seek out an Aladdin's Lamp, or Aladdin's Room, that grants wishes. The major differences between these characters and the Summer Wine cast is that the former are staggeringly miserable and the latter actually did something during their time on screen. There's no finding a rusting bathtub and sliding down a hill into a pond with this lot; instead, they wander around, sit down, wander around some more, lie in some mud, get up, wander around, argue about nothing, and so forth. We're constantly told that the Zone is dangerous, fatal even, and yet not one scene presents evidence of this.

Here I would normally write 'spoilers', except in this instance there's nothing to spoil.

After the initial breach of the Zone's border, one can be hopeful that other pertinent events might occur. They don't. We have a five minute train journey where we don't even see any scenery, just the back of someone's head. The 'stalker' - the group leader - goes for a walk whilst the remaining pair scowl at each other. Then they spend 30 minutes walking 50 yards across a field. Periodically someone lies down in the grass. They all lie down in some puddles whilst one of the group mutters absolute nonsense for half an hour,. For some reason, they go to sleep and we're treated to five minutes of a camera panning over random items on a stream bed. The group awake and the talking starts again. Later we are treated to a 20 minute scene of the three walking very slowly through a filthy tunnel. I need to emphasise that nothing whatsoever happens during all of this, nor at any stage in the film after the initial quarter of an hour.

More talking, more sitting, then sitting and talking. Nothing that is said is relevant to anything.

The movie, if anyone cares, is based on 'Roadside Picnic' by the Strugatsky brothers. The book is centred on an original concept and it's worth reading, although IMO falls short of being a classic. Aside from being based in 'The Zone' and involving a wish-granting room (it's actually a globe in the novel) this movie has no connection with he book.

My advice is save your money. If you want to an authentic experience of 'the Zone', wait until it's foggy then go out and lie in a puddle for three hours talking about any old nonsense that comes into your head. Then jump up and, pretending there's something terrible over the next hedge, return home using a different route.

Magnificent film, dreadful print

Artificial Eye has missold this release. The print quality is dire, the sound quality is terrible. One of the truly great films of the post-war period has been given very poor treatment here. It's caused me to pause before buying the rest of AE's Tarkovsky blu-rays.

This Criterion release is very good, however I think it deserved more. Criterion used to produce really nice packaging & booklets for a lot of their special releases, but these days, I presume because of the expense involved & what consumers are willing to pay, have cut back so most of their releases come in the standard bluray plastic cases with fold out booklets.

Anyway, the format or release is of little concern to me, when the film itself is a masterpiece.

Highest recommendation.

Absorbing yarn, SF meets meditation on the human condition

Adapted from a novel Roadside Picnic by the Strugatsky Brothers (Gamers may recall STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl and it's various sequels, which was based on the same source material), Stalker is modified by director Tarkovsky to fit his own mold of film-making, with long unhurried takes and lots of navel-gazing. In the film, the 'Zone' is an area of supernatural anomalies formed in the aftermath of an alien release, allegedly containing a Room that can grant wishes. The Stalker undertakes to guide two men, known only as the Writer and the Professor, to the mythical Room. While bearing some plot similarities, Stalker is more exciting than Tarkovsky's film of Solaris (not to be confused with the Steven Soderbergh adaptation), and only towards the end where the Writer is berating the Stalker did I begin to feel the heavy-handedness. The film has a distinct visual look where sequences in the "real" world are presented in sepia, while scenes in the "Zone" are in color. After seeing it on Doordarshan as a kid (in part, I imagine, I doubt I sat through it all), my first viewing as an adult was more than a decade ago on the Artificial Eye DVD, which was struck from a weak source and encoded shoddily. The new Mosfilm restoration is amazing, although the sepia scenes sometimes acquire a tinge of urine yellow more at home in a David Fincher movie.

I watched this with an eye to going on to read Dyer's Zona - a narrative of the film. I knew what to expect from Tarkovsky and I happily enjoyed the film. It is hardly a whodunnit? It deliberately leaves gaps and false clues, but I happen to be ok with this kind of film. I don't find it winds me up like it does with lots of people. I like the slow pace, the shifting moods and the generalised air of significance, constantly deferred as the blokes actually just bumble around. If you liked this then why not try yourself on Andrei Rublev (1966) next, rather than the more obvious Solaris (1972)?
