But the book itself...
Pros:
-Easy to read, large font. Most of the book is fine and if you only read notation, then you're fine because it seems the notation is accurate. However...
Cons:
The tablature is shocking. I can forgive the odd typo now and again, but the amount of errors in this book is horrific. I have been playing guitar for 19 years and can also read music. When it comes to technically complex music such as Dream Theater, there's an authenticity that comes with buying the official written music, and it makes for a good study guide for myself and students who often fall foul to novice fan-made guitar tabs online. In this instance, I wouldn't let a student near this, unless it was purely for collectors purposes.
The photo I have attached is the opening bars to 'Innocence Faded', where Petrucci tracked two guitars an octave apart on the record. The notation correctly reads two E's as the second note in bar one. The tab however reads third string fret 9 (an E) and second string fret 15 (a D). This error occurs in every instance of that particular note throughout Riff A. This was the first one. There are mistakes in Space Dye Vest, Caught In A Web and The Mirror, where the notation is correct but the tab is either on the wrong string, wrong fret, or both! And those are just ones that spring to mind.
Apparently this book was edited by John Petrucci. I highly doubt that.
I am going to be writing to Warner Publishing for releasing such an inaccurate mess of a book and putting the words 'Dream Theater' and 'Authentic' on the same front cover. I suggest other people who have written a bad review do the same.
I rarely feel compelled to write bad reviews, but this truly is awful, especially for fans who are buying this book to learn some incredibly technical guitar chops. Don't bother, unless you can spot the errors and don't mind having pencil corrections all over your shiny new book.
