Unifi mit Mesh einfach unschlagbar

Wer problemloses WLAN im Haus/Wohnung haben möchte hat früher sicher zu den bekannten FritzBoxen gegriffen. Ich habe sicher 4 Stück davon rumfliegen und immer wieder als WLAN AP missbraucht. Leider war die Anbindung immer mies oder es mussten aufwendig Kabel gelegt werden. Denn fiel das WLAN plötzlich aus. Ich kenne das Siel seit Jahren und es wurde immer schlimmer. Auch die Möglichkeit über das Stromnetz habe ich durch, es hat letztlich kläglich versagt da es absolut unzuverlässig ist.
Über YouTube Videos (u.a. von iDomix) aber auch Rezensionen und Kommentaren auf anderen Plattformen bin ich zu Ubiqiuti gekommen.
Aktuell habe ich über 3 Etagen (Betondecken) je einen Unifi AP aufgestellt (1x AP-AC-Lite und 2x AP-AC-PRO). Alles über Netzwerkkabel mit Hilfe zweier Unifi Switches verbunden und habe im gesamten Haus wirklich eine nahezu perfekte WLAN Abdeckung. Vorher dachte ich auch ich hätte gutes WLAN, aber da dies immer wieder Zusammenbrach, war dies nicht so gut wie ich dachte. Ich habe nur noch eine FritzBox Kabel für meinen Kabelanschluss und als DECT Station.

Da das Haus dicke Mauern hat und im Garten das WLAN dennoch nicht optimal war, wurde dieser AP-AC-Mesh angeschafft.
Die Reichweite im Garten ist Phänomenal und alles ohne das Netzwerk zu wechseln! Die Einbindung war mit der Unifi Controller-Software sehr einfach, fast selbsterklärend automatisch ;-)
Auch wenn mein Mesh AP nur 35% Empfangsleistung hat (Drahtlos angeschlossen), habe ich durch Speedtests herausgefunden das die Anbindung immernoch selbst zum HD Streamen noch vollkommen ausreicht.

Ich kann bislang die Unifi Produkte von Ubiquiti uneingeschränkt empfehlen.

Nachtrag August 2019:
Weiterhin keinerlei Probleme oder gar Ausfälle. Ubiquiti liefert regelmäßig Updates zu allen Geräten.

Enorme Reichweite - nichts für Anfänger

Ich betreibe mittlerweile 2 UAP-AC-M für Freifunk im Außenbereich.

Weder Sonne, Regen, Wind und Wetter können dem Kleinen scheinbar etwas anhaben. Also klare Empfehlung auch für den Außeneinsatz.
Die Reichweite ist erstaunlich und liegt weit über dem was man aus dem Consumer-Bereich kennt. Im freien Feld sind hier 500 m nicht unrealistisch bei stabiler und schneller Verbindung.

Die Konfiguration ist allerdings ein wenig gewöhnungsbedürftig und kommt bei weitem nicht an das heran was man von vorbildlichen Produkten wie z. B. den Fritz!Boxen gewohnt ist. Ein erfahrenes Händchen bei der Einrichtung wird von mir empfohlen.
Wer den Ubiquiti für Freifunk einsetzen möchte, sollte die Grundlagen einer Linux-Konsole beherrschen. Das flashen ist nicht ganz ohne. In den lokalen Freifunk-Gruppen finden sich aber sicher reichlich erfahrene User.

Alles in allem ein leistungstechnisch überragendes Gerät das sich trotz seiner handlichen Bauform auch im Freien wohl fühlt.

Ich habe inzwischen über die Jahre immer mehr Fritz-Boxen, TP-Link Geräte usw. angesammelt. Alle haben einem irgendwie W-Lan zur Verfügung gestellt. Aber, wie oft habe ich die Router schon neu gestartet? Wie oft ist auf dem Sofa kein W-Lan, 5 cm daneben schon...?

Kurzum, es war mir langsam blöd. Abhilfe sollte dieses kleine Gerät schaffen. Was soll ich sagen, das hat es!
Endlich ein W-Lan mit tauglicher Geschwindigkeit und vor allem es funktioniert einfach, kein neustarten etc. und die Abdeckung ist auch extrem gut. Das Teil hängt hier im Treppenhaus und man bekommt gut und gerne fast 2 Etagen damit abgedeckt. Ich denke aber damit es perfekt ist kommt demnächst noch einer dazu.

Zwei Sätze nur zur Konfiguration: Sicherlich ist diese nicht so einfach wie bei einem vorkonfiguriertem Gerät und man muss zumindest mal die Grundlagen kennen, aber so schwer ist es dann auch nicht. Besonders mit der App für das Handy, einfach altes Wlan anlassen, Access Point an den Router anstecken und das Gerät mit der App konfigurieren, Wlan am alten Router ausmachen und vergessen.

I am a senior IT infrastructure engineer used to dealing with the likes of Cisco devices. This thing has been a real challenge to configure. What should have taken 10 minutes, ended up taking 6 hours. These devices are supposed to be marketed for people with very little IT knowledge. In all fairness, Ubiquiti has made a lot of assumptions based on this fact. If I was installing on a basic network, then it probably would have taken 10 minutes.

The product (like all Ubiquiti's devices) feels well made and it was nice of them to include a PoE injector (that isn't waterproof (IP64)) and no network cables. I just wish their software developers were half as good as their product designers and manufacturers. According to the dates on their forum, some of the issues I experienced were reported over 4 years ago.

The problems arise when one tries to configure one of their devices to work on an enterprise network, things get difficult because they have not considered any of the complexities of an enterprise network, especially accommodating security restrictions.

Typically, one would plug in the device, it would get an IP address from the magical DHCP server (home router) and via the UniFi Cloud Key controller, the device would be "adopted", where it is then provisioned, which includes updating the firmware. Job done. The problem is that this device had been manufactured some time ago, and the shipped firmware was so old it couldn't be recognised by the controller. Ordinarily, one can push the newest firmware via the controller, however, in this case, the controller had no Internet connectivity.

The device ships with a default IP address of 192.168.1.20, however, the controller was sitting on a network with a totally different IP range and therefore the controller could not see it. Ordinarily, a DHCP server would issue a valid IP address, but guess what, there is no DHCP server on this network (at the moment).

In the end, I had to put the controller back on to the default 192.168.1.0/24 network - something that couldn't be done if this network had been in production and manually upgrade the firmware via SSH and SCP.

To me, the logical option would be to program the device with WiFi Direct, that way, one could simply connect a phone to the WiFi Direct AP and configure it via their app as a stand-alone device. Of course, if this had not been the first UniFi AP on the network, being a mesh device, things would probably have been easier.

How it works as an AP remains to be seen. I managed to set up one BSSID, before packing up for the day, however, it now seems to have disappeared and the blue light is flashing slowly! Something to work out in the morning. I'll update this review with details on how it works as an AP as time goes by.

All in all, I should have learned my lesson with Ubiquiti's "Dream Machine" - which had to be returned, and stuck with Cisco, even if they are 10 times the price.

Mi dilungherò non poco nel fare questa recensione, in quanto ritengo sia necessario essere abbastanza chiari e precisi nel descrivervi con cosa si ha a che fare.
Recensisco questa antenna Wi-Fi, precisandovi che la mia precedente esperienza si basa su un prodotto dello stesso marchio, il Pico-M2, il quale mi ha reso un servizio davvero notevole, ancora funzionante, ma ho dovuto aggiornarmi a questa sua evoluzione, in quanto, avendo cambiato operatore, passando ad una connessione eolo, operante a 100Mb\s di picco, ho avuto bisogno di avere un segnale wireless più prestante.

IL MARCHIO
Riguardo al marchio, posso dirvi che si tratta di un brand americano di alta qualità, destinato soprattutto ad un uso business, quindi in ambito lavorativo per intenderci, per creare vere e proprie infrastrutture comunicanti tra loro, infatti, il punto di forza dei prodotti di questa azienda, si basa appunto su connessioni wireless a lunga distanza, anche tra edifici distanti 50Km tra di loro.
Nonostante questo, hanno anche una gamma di prodotti destinata all'edificio vero e proprio, che comunque sono pensati per avere un ampia copertura W-Fi

RECENSIONE - CONSIDERAZIONI - CONSIGLI
Questo dispositivo in particolare, è pensato per l'esterno, in quanto resiste ai raggi UV, al freddo, al gelo e persino all'acqua, per assurdo, potete installarlo in mezzo al giardino su di un palo.
La connessione avviene tramite un unico cavo di rete LAN, che connesso tramite il suo alimentatore, fornisce tramita lo stesso cavo LAN, la corrente necessaria al suo funzionamento (Power Over Ethernet - o POE) cosa che rende assolutamente comoda la sua installazione, che come vi ho detto, può avvenire anche in mezzo a un giardino grazie a questa peculiarità.
Il segnale generato da questo dispositivo è assolutamente potente e stabile, nulla a che vedere con i normali router che sono normalmente in commercio, infatti, questo device, è in grado di coprire fino a 250 metri di raggio, cosa che avviene più facilmente se tale raggio è privo di ostacoli, ma questa è cosa ovvia.
La stabilità del segnale una volta connesso è eccezionale, personalmente, ho proceduto ad installarlo montato su di una trave vicino al sotto tetto, al momento ho connesso il mio smartphone, e sono in casa, una casa vecchia con muri spessi almeno 45centimetri ed in sasso, ma nonostante questo, alla distanza di circa 15 metri dal dispositivo, il mio cellulare mi indica un segnale pieno, senza nemmeno una tacca spenta. (poco più vicino, ho un famoso router della NETGEAR, che invece sta messo a 2 tacche su 4 di segnale, nella mia stessa posizione)
L'idea che sia un dispositivo pensato per ambiti estesi, come palazzi di uffici e luoghi lavorativi, non deve spaventarvi, tuttaltro, infatti, questa loro caratteristica, li rende dispositivi assolutamente stabili e privi di difetti di ogni sorta, donandogli sorprendentemente quella marcia in più che manca ai classici dispositivi casalinghi.
E' vero, non posso negarlo, il sistema con cui dovrete aver a che fare per configurarlo, ai primi approcci può sembrarvi piuttosto complesso e complicato, anche perchè, vi ricordo, che essendo un azienda americana, tutto è rigorosamente in inglese, tuttavia, una volta imparate le funzioni e le principali voci che avrete necessità di conoscere per la configurazione, non avrete nessun tipo di problema, infatti, una volta configurato, potrete tranquillamente dimenticarvi del suo sistema completo e complesso che sta dietro a questo device.
La configurazione comunque, avviene tramite applicazione da Windows, oppure da smartphone, sempre tramite APP, per motivi di sicurezza, legati alla natura business di questi device, non hanno infatti una configurazione WEB tramite Browser, il che, li rende dispositivi decisamente più sicuri, e di fatto renderà anche la vostra rete più sicura.
Il consiglio che vi do, è quello di configuarlo tranquillamente a tavolino, sulla vostra scrivania, davanti al vostro PC, in quanto, se qualcosa andasse storto, avete la possibilità di ripristinarlo di fabbrica col suo reset, e ricominciare da capo, fin che non sarete soddisfatti della configurazione.
Personalmente, ho separato la linea 2,4Ghz da quella 5Ghz per mia comodità, ottenendo 2 reti Wi-Fi separate, in quanto, il dispositivo, per sua natura (Mesh) in genere stabilisce da solo quale delle due bande utilizzare, il suo software, è in grado di fornirvi davvero molteplici opzioni se sfruttato a pieno.

Se devo dare una nota negativa, sta nel fatto che il mio vecchio Pico, aveva la comoda possibilità di effettuare il reset di fabbrica, direttamente da un tasto sull'alimentatore del dispositivo, cosa che permetteva di fattola sua installazione anche in luoghi scomodi, come un alto palo, ma garantendo la sua massima governabilità.
Questa cosa, sembra non avere più effetto, seppur esiste comunque il tasto di reset sul nuovo alimentatore, che però, a mio parere, non effettua assolutamente la procedura di reset, forse una sorta di auto-protezione per evitare disguidi o pasticci da persone ''non autorizzate'' alle manovre di manutenzione.
Nonostante questa piccola mancanza, che non escludo possa essere una sorta di difetto, ripeto che il dispositivo, ina volta configurato, ve lo potete tranquillamente dimanticare in ambito domestico.

Concludendo, il prezzo di 99€ è decisamente basso considerando l'altissima qualità del prodotto con cui abbiamo a che fare, infatti, mi sento tranquillamente di affermare che costa come un router normale, ma offre senza dubbio una moltitudine di opzioni e prestazioni aggiuntive rispetto questultimo.
Considerando di averlo preso per 89,99€ direi che è stato un affare, utile a chiunque necessita di estendere il raggio Wi-Fi della propria rete, potete comodamente permettervi di installarlo a fianco al vostro router e di spegnere il wireless interno del medesimo come ho fatto io, vi ricordo che ho un router NETGEAR, che poco tempo fa costava attorno ai 139€ ora sostituito da poco col medesimo modello in quanto mi trovo bene, quindi, con router nuovo, e nonostante questo, nella stessa posizione, il segnale del router è la metà di quello generato da questo splendido UBIQUITI AC Mesh.

Dispositivo assolutamente professionale, stabile, economico visto il suo utilizzo e funzioni, da prendere in seria considerazione in vista di un necessario ampliamento del vostro segnale wireless. Promosso a pieni voti!

I've messed around with other wireless network providers from many 'premium home' brands before and could never get a reliable system with good functionality. Instead I paid high prices for stuff that just caused me more frustration.

Enter Ubiquiti. Brilliant stuff. Excellent physical quality. Unparallelled reliability. Superb network management software with more options than end users could ever need, and a wifi experience that users cant fault.

This external extender is no different. Sits outside, gives me excellent network coverage for the garden. I don't use it as part of mesh network; the rest of my points are just standard AP's. I'm very happy. Thank you.

I have two of these mesh APs covering a 4500 square foot building. APs are in the attic with Antennas aimed to commonly used rooms.

Building is an old 1904 build which has 3m ceilings, floors are wood joists and floor boards. Through these floors I see a very steady -65dB to -70dB signal. Android reports 4/5 bars of signal.

Two of these devices can easily cover area of 140m2 mounted in an attic approx 8m from ground through two wooden floors and joists.

After initial problems outside with range. I realised the wall mount was too close to the wall and impeding it. Frustrating. I read a review on here where a purchaser had put in the loft. This resolved problems and it’s working in all the garden and all of the house, augmenting the virgin super hub which has a better signal only in two rooms. The technical team are also very willing to resolve problems.
