Peekskill USA: Inside the Infamous 1949 Riots (English Edition) Kindle Ausgabe
In 1949, author Howard Fast found himself in the middle of a violent and terrifying anticommunist riot in Peekskill, New York. Fast was the master of ceremonies at a civil rights benefit concert featuring Paul Robeson, Pete Seeger, and others. But local newspapers stoked anticommunist anger, and the event was besieged by a mob armed with rocks, clubs, fence posts, and knives. Fast’s Peekskill, USA is a blow-by-blow account of the bloody riots, which led to the beating of the first black combat pilot in the US Air Force, Eugene Bullard. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Howard Fast including rare photos from the author’s estate.

Douglas DoepkeBewertet in den USA am12. Juli 20125,0 von 5 Sternen A Revealing Piece of History
Peekskill, 1949, provides a gripping glimpse of the political temperature of the time, soon to be exploited by the infamous McCarthy hearings. Author Fast was one of the participants in both bloody Peekskill events of that Cold War year. On August 27, legendary basso Paul Robeson was scheduled to perform at a picnic in the Peekskill area. His well-known leftist politics attracted both Left and Right. What ensued was a planned assault by right-wing vigilantes on picnic-goers, with the apparent connivance of local law enforcement. Fast describes these scenes in gripping first-person detail. The second battle, on September 4, occurred when Robeson supporters rescheduled his aborted first appearance, and were again set upon, again with the connivance of local officials. Cars were smashed, heads broken, while police looked on.
Fast makes clear the generally fascistic tone of both assaults, replete with the anti-Semitic and racial epithets hurled at mixed-race concert-goers. Coming on the heels of WWII, he understandably draws parallels here with the rise of Nazism in Europe. At times, however, his counter-invective reflects a highly agitated emotional state, unusual for a historical document. Still, the work amounts to an invaluable glimpse of an America most of us would just as soon not think about. The slender booklet also includes revealing photos, plus official post-mortems that lend credibility to Fast's generally first-person account.

This is a very short book, almost a pamphlet about an all but forgotten incident-even where it happenned- in the late 40's I'm surprised no one has added to it. It is written from Fast's personal experience which is very interesting. There is information in the back from news articles from the day.

The book was smaller than I expected but gripping and haunting to think that this sort of thing happened in my lifetime, and could easily happen again today with the same set of perpetrators.

My hometown and I remember the incident. Keep in mind it is the view from the left. Well written.

Jeffrey SweetBewertet in den USA am2. Januar 20135,0 von 5 Sternen Vivid first-person view of an important piece of postwar history
I'd heard of the Peekskill riots, but Howard Fast -- who was a witness and a participant in the incidents he describes -- makes them vivid and immediate and reminds me of how significant they were in the nightmare of post-war political hooliganism. It's a short work with a hell of a punch.
