Daggers are mentioned in many modern books about medieval and Renaissance swordplay, but until now none described how daggers were used in combat. Drawing from sources written from 1409–1600 (including the works of Hans Talhoffer, Fiore dei Liberi, Filippo Vadi, Joachim Meyer and more), this book uses step-by-step photos and historic illustrations to demonstrate the deadly and effective techniques of European dagger fighting. Talhoffer and the others were men with real fighting experience, not self-promoted"grand masters" or denizens of the training hall, and they wrote the manuals that form the basis for Medieval and Renaissance Dagger Combat. The dynamics of the knife fight have not changed over the centuries, and the masters' lessons are as useful against an attacker with today's tactical folder as they were against the first dagger.

Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

Jason Vail began his study of martial arts with judo at age 12, and at 18 he began a lifelong study of karate. He began his weapons training with iaido and bojutsu in the late 1970s, shortly afterward turning to Vietnamese staff and spear. He has been studying and interpreting medieval and Renaissance fighting manuals, focusing primarily on unarmed and armed dagger techniques, since 2001.

John Clements has practiced cut-and-thrust swordsmanship for almost 20 years and trains regularly in long-sword, sword and shield, sword and buckler, sword and dagger, Medieval spear, and rapier and dagger methods. He lectures on historical weaponry and is an ardent promoter of contact-weapon sparring with historical replica swords.

    I thought it would look expensive on the inside, with medival-like illustrations. It's actually black and white toilet paper quality paper and there are two grown men on pictures and they play with knives and swords. It's such a waste of money

    Un defaut: les references pas forcement precise aux pages des sources mais il y a une bonne bibliographie.

    Jason Vail is very much into the field of Historical European Martial Arts. I can tell, because the book he wrote has prose that is professional and yet has joyish, boyish enthusiasm leaking at the seams. He takes us through a history of knives in human culture, overviews the common hardware that has been found from the middle ages, and then recounts, in great detail, accounts of knifework and feats of knife defense that were written about by people at the time. He shows us how knife attacks were common, and in turn that Europeans sought to create martial arts that were intended to defend a man from a blade striking in the dark.

    Then begins the meat of the book - a long, long, /long/ list of moves, techniques and tactical advice, distilled and placed togehter from the work of at least a dozen historical masters into one, complete, unified system. Every technique is fully illustrated and described step by step, complete with advice on how to train it safely, making this book a must have for anyone who seeks to get into knife and unarmed work in HEMA, whether in their back yard or as part of a larger cirriculum. I personally study European martial arts myself, and aside from some of Christian Tobler's work, I don't think I've seen a better illustrated training manual, nor one that's more easily accessible.

    Even for those of us who aren't martially inclined, the information provided is invaluable for those seeking to understand the nature of violence in ages past, something that is sadly very much not understood or looked into, even by some scholars today.

    This book is ideal for those who want more detail about the context of violence in the Middle Ages, information on how men defended themselves from knives in days past, and, of course, those who want to actually experience the living history that is HEMA, or see it demonstrated. If any of these things are you, you need to buy this book immediately.

    Medieval dagger techniques provide effective knife defense. Although no one wants to get involved with a knife wielding assailant, out of all of the techniques from various martial arts I and my training partner have tried, the ones demonstrated within this book were effective. In fact we dumped our previous martial arts techniques due to their effectiveness.

    What I liked about these knife defences:

    - They can be applied from your natural reaction to a knife attack
    - They provide a level of control over the knife-attacking arm from the outset
    - Simple and adaptable to your present skill set
    - They can lead easily into take-downs

    We looked at the basic techniques and found that we gravitated to some more naturally than others, my training partner and I preferring different techniques due to our personal psychology, body movement and body size and type.

    We found that some techniques if they failed or weren't applied in time could be backed up quickly by another technique for example if we're too late applying the First Upper Key then we could quickly follow up with the Second Upper Key. The Second Upper Key is actually a good progression from many techniques.

    We found that the book does describe defence techniques in a pure method form, but I'd recommend adding distractions such as a palm strike to the face whilst blocking a downward thrust for the Second Upper Key technique prior to the take-down and so on. I'd also recommend learning some leg-sweeps or trips to put the attacker down quickly once you've taken control of the knife-wielding arm. One is demonstrated in the "Over-the-Leg Throw Facing the Same Direction" technique within the book and this throw plus a basic leg sweep from the inside leg can be applied to most of the techniques.

    Definitely worth looking into for those interested in knife-defence.

    This was clearly written with a nod toward actual use as dagger/Knife defense. The author explains himself and the techniques well and clearly, though there is significant subtlety involved that begs for an instructor. When I trained with Mr. Vail, he was straight to the point, direct and had patience as we went through various techniques.
    The book is solidly grounded with lots of historical documentation, though he does clearly pull from various of the pasted masters. I recognized Fiore dei Liberi, Joachim Meyer, Johannes Liechtenauer, even some of what looked like footwork from George Silver! if you are a practitioner, this book is a must. highly recommended.
