Unlike APs for SMBs, which are mostly ceiling mounted, and APs/routers for consumers mounted on the desk, the Zyxel NWA50AX can be placed on the ceiling, wall or desktop. This has consequences for heat dissipation. It uses a design with front and back thermal panel to prevent the AP from getting too hot. This is to ensure stability and extend the service life.     Der Zyxel AP wird in einem unspektakulären braunen Karton geliefert. Auf dem Karton befindet sich ein CE Zeichen, auf einem Aufkleber befindet sich die Seriennummer und Mac Adresse des Gerätes. Je nach dem eigenen Netzwerk wird das Leben einfacher, wenn die Mac Adresse direkt bekannt ist.In dem Karton befindet sich der AP, ein Netzteil mit EU und UK Plug, eine Halterung für Wandmontage mit Schauben, ein Gummipöpel, und auch eine Infotapete mit Sicherheitshinweisen in vielen Sprachen.Im inneren des Kartons ist ein QR Code, der verweist auch eine Webseite mit einem "Getting Started" PDF. Wer keine Lust auf QR Codes hat kann auf der Zyxel Seite nach "NWA50AX" suchen.Die Inbetriebnahme ist einfach. Ich habe den AP direkt in mein Netz gehängt, und auch mit Power over Ethernet betrieben. Ich betreibe den AP über einen PoE powered PoE Switch, der über einen 65W PoE++ Injektor gespeist wird.In meinem Fall habe ich den AP über eine IP 192.168.x.x erreicht. Wird der AP ohne Verbindung mit dem eigenen Netzwerk in Betrieb genommen ist die IP Adresse 1.1.1.1. Das initiale Passwort ist: User=admin Password=1234.Nach der Eingabe dieser Zugangsdaten ist der AP dann konfigurierbar. Es muß beim Einloggen nur der Stand Alone Betrieb angewählt werden, und dann ist die Zyxel Cloud auch nicht mit im Boot. Wenn der AP nicht konfiguriert ist leuchtet eine LED Grün/Orange. Wenn die Konfiguration abgeschlossen ist, und der AP eine IP bezogen hat, dann leuchtet die LED Blau.Fazit:Der AP ist für mich perfekt. Er funktioniert sehr gut, und ist recht einfach zu konfigurieren. Bei mir funktioniert der AP im PoE Betrieb perfekt. Daher 5 Sterne!

    Weil meine Devolo WiFi Powerlan Extender reihenweise aussteigen und insgesamt das Netzwerk durcheinander bringen und ich dazu noch in einem sehr alten Gemäuer lebe mit richtig dicken Wänden, war ich auf der Suche nach etwas, was vielleicht diesen ganzen überteuerten Kram ersetzt. Mit großer Skepsis habe ich diesen AP in Betrieb genommen. Montiert habe ich ihn auf dem Dachboden wo er durch Holzdecken und seitlich natürlich durch mehrere Mauern funken muss. Zu meiner großen Verwunderung musste ich feststellen, dass nun selbst mein Shelly EM3 im metallenen Zählerschrank im oberen Geschoss nun bei geschlossener Tür plötzlich wunderbaren Empfang hat. Das Devolo Gerät schaffte es direkt platziert vor dem Schrank nicht über -80dB.

    Unterm Dach werden es natürlich gut und gerne mal 50°C aber das macht dem AP von Zyxel überhaupt nichts aus. Test bestanden.

    Ich werde nun einen zweiten kaufen und damit das Untergeschoss vollständig ausleuchten können, alleine deswegen.

    Die Software ist okay würde ich sagen. Ich habe einen Mikrotik Router also meine Schmerzgrenze ist recht hoch was UIs angeht. Allerdings traue ich keinem Webdienst, der meine Netzwerkgeräte managen kann. Daher habe ich konsequent die Benachrichtigung ausgeschaltet, dass ich doch meinen AP mit "Nebula Cloud" managen soll. Wenigstens lässt sich das dauerhaft ausschalten.

    Inbetriebnahme war easy: Anklemmen, läuft. Danach SSID und Kennwörter angepasst und sogar das Roaming zwischen den unterschiedlichen APs läuft wunderbar. Da gab es in der Vergangenheit auch öfters mal Konflikte. Besonders Nett finde ich die Möglichkeit eine Hand voll Netzwerke auszustrahlen und diese sogar auf einzelne Vlans zu verteilen. Nicht, dass ich das benötige aber haben ist besser als brauchen, wissen schon.

    Sehr stabile und hochwertige Ausführung. PoE wird unterstützt, trotzdem ist ein extra Netzteil dabei und kein PoE Injector, was mir besser gefällt.

    WLAN 801.11ax geht auf 2.4 und 5GHz. Sehr flexibler Einsatz: Stand-alone (Web-Interface), mit Controller oder Cloud sowie optional mit OpenSource Firmware. Für die notwendigen Basisfunktionen ist die Cloudverwaltung kostenlos.

    Für ein Gerät mit internen Antennen ist die Reichweite sehr gut. Natürlich könnte man mittels eines WLAN Routers mit einem (häßlichen) Wald aus externen WLAN Antennen mehr Reichweite erzielen, aber der Fokus dieses APs ist ohnehin nicht eine Einzelinstallation, dafür ist die Bedienung nicht optimiert. Wenn man sich so ein Gerät kauft, dann sollte man sich schon etwas auskennen. Dafür bekommt man alle Konfigurationsmöglichkeiten, die man sich vorstellen kann inkl. Mesh Funktionen.

    Es gibt bei diesem Gerät mit einem Preis von deutlich unter 100 Euro absolut nichts zu meckern, das können andere APs in der gleichen Preisklasse nicht besser oder schlechter. Die Flexibilität in der Software-Verwaltung ist bei Zyxel aber besser als bei anderen Produkten.

    Um etwas mehr Geld gibt es die Pro Version, die für mehr parallele Streams ausgelegt ist, was aber nur bei einer größeren Zahl an Clients im Netz etwas bringt, die nutzbare Datenrate erhöht das nicht oder nur unwesentlich.

Bei der Einrichtung bin ich auf ein paar Probleme gestoßen, weil ich dachte, ich brauche die Zyxel App unbedingt dazu. Dem ist aber nicht so! Mit der Zyxel App kann man bei weitem nicht so viele Einstellungen vornehmen wie manuell. Wenn man sich Videos dazu auf YouTube ansieht, kommt man aber ganz gut durch.

    Wichtig: Wer den Access-Point als reine WLan-Erweiterung braucht, der muss nur den gleichen Wlan-Namen und das gleiche Passwort verwenden, dann switchen die Endgeräte automatisch zwischen dem Router und dem Access-Point hin und her. Wlan6 funktioniert super. Keine Probleme bisher

    Ne ho presi due, uno alimentato via PoE senza problemi.
    Il software Zyxel l’ho usato 30 secondi: giusto il tempo di aprire il menu per flashare OpenWrt (operazione non da fare a cuor leggero, ma seguendo le istruzioni è andato tutto liscio): mi spiace preferisco risparmiare i soldi per l’abbonamento Nebula.
    Da quello che ho capito la versione free va comunque bene per un uso ‘casual’ senza troppe esigenze, probabilmente il 90% degli home users. Avendo però una nota ‘pro’ anche nel nome era un peccato e via di openwrt per sbloccare tutte le features!
    Ho sostituito un orbi rbk50 (router+satellite) con due di questi AP in coppia con uno switch 2,5gbit: devo dire che in termini assoluti di velocità wifi non sentirete molte differenze, anche se ha l’uplink a 2,5gbit. Forse col wifi6, ma non ho device adeguati e quindi vado ‘solo’ di wifi5. Ho la fibra 2,5gbit, ma anche con la gigabit in genere il wifi5 lo saturate tutto, quindi non molte differenze in termini di velocità assoluta come detto (beh, con uno switch adeguato a monte, potete connettervi in wifi su due ap diversi e saturare la banda ancora di più ma questo è un altro discorso :D)
    Tuttavia mi sembra che la reattività in genere sia migliorata un bel po, il che non fa mai male.
    Rispetto all’orbi in termini di ricezione non ho notato cambiamenti: nessun problema prima e nessuno ora (è un segno positivo per me considerando che la disposizione delle antenne è diversa e l’orbi è installato in verticale come una torretta).
    OpenWrt comunque è un altro mondo di possibilità e se siete smanettoni questa deve essere la
    vostra scelta, con buona pace dei software proprietari.
