- you are unfamiliar with brain science beyond the very popular level, e.g. you know that the
brain is made of neurons but you don't know some neurological pathology such as akinetopsia...
- your goal is to get started with some understanding on what's really going on inside people's
skull from a scientific point of view.
Medina is an amazing narrator, I found myself rarely bored and it was never because of how
he was speaking. He seems always excited about what he's telling you and the enthusiasm tends
to be contagious.
The content is administered with lot of care about avoiding being too technical while keeping
entertained the more scientifically avid people.
The book brings you through 24 lessons, each one centered on a topic::
1 How Your Brain Works
2 Your Unique Thinking Abilities

6 The Advantages of Forgetting
7 Creativity and Fluid Intelligence
8 How Your Brain Uses Your Senses
9 Seeing with Your Brain: Vision
10 Feeling with Your Brain: Emotion
11 How Emotion Drives Attention
12 Pleasure and Your Brain
13 What Makes You Happy
14 How Your Brain Manages Stress
15 Your Social Brain
16 How Infant Brains Work
17 How Adolescent Brains Work

Each topic comes with a brief review of some scientific findings related to it, often with
references to specific papers. Medina really cares about drawing a precise border between what
we know and what we don't know, what we have evidence for and what we don't.
On the scientific side, you can stay assured, Medina really tries to be scientifically sound as a
real neuroscientist is (and he is one: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Medina).
To keep you really entertained, the book is full of examples from everyday
life, nice quotes and references to pop culture. So, on the entertainment side,
you'll be hardly bored.
Through the several topics which capture the most different aspects of human life,
the great quantity of content that Medina has put in the book will make you look with
new eyes to your existence. For example, it will give you very sound motivation for doing
some sport, no matter how much of a bookworm you are, and we'll make you appreciate any
social moment of your life a lot more.
I finished listening to it with the satisfaction of having invested my time in a really
If I had to sum up my review in a paragraph, it will be this:
Through each single lecture the book captures the fundamental feature of the
human brain, which is: it is the most fascinating thing you can put in so
little space, as far as we human know. I bet you can't listen to the entire
book without googling a single time to learn even more about yourself.
