Kurzbeschreibung

Forced to face his mortality after he suffers a life-threatening injury, Ewan Cameron decides that he needs a son. There is just one problem- he needs a wife first.

Ewan has never wanted to marry. He's not the sort of man to be tied down to one woman for the rest of his life. Luckily for him, the old Clan Cameron traditions offer the perfect solution: a handfasting. Ewan can have a year of marriage- long enough to sire his son- and then he and his wife can go their seperate ways.

Cait Everleigh is the perfect temporary bride. She is only a servant, but Ewan has known her almost his entire life. He knows everything about her- from her lowly English origins to her bookish hopes and dreams. There's only one thing that Ewan has missed- Cait has been in love with him for years!

A half-English castle maid knows better than to dream of a life with the man next in line to be Clan Cameron's Laird. At least she thinks that she does, until she gets a taste.

Can this dream become their reality?

NOTE: This book contains explicit scenes and is not suitable for readers under age 18.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great romance 13. Mai 2013
Von Lorelei - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

It was the first time reading a book that hadn't been reviewed. I was hesitant.
The hero, Ewan's near death experience leads him to want to take a hand fasted bride for a year and a day to obtain an heir. He chooses Cait (who has quite a background). She has been in love with Ewan since they were teens. The entire book focuses on the feelings both characters encounter through this marriage. Ewan realizes he loves Cait, but cannot tell her. Like most romances, misunderstandings and miscommunication plague the couple, tearing them apart before Cait can tell Ewan of her pregnancy.
The author did a fine job of defining the characters. Although the situation bringing the characters together may be far fetched, their interactions, reactions and thought processes are very realistic. A Year and a Day was a pleasant, romantic read complete with intrigue, a little mystery and the always welcome, Highland clan defending a castle (warning: a little racy after the marriage vows). I recommend reading this book.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Such an Emotional Read **4 1/2 Stars** 19. Mai 2014
Von Reading Fanatic - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
I really loved this book. It's the sequel to A Beautiful Lie (The Camaraes). That book was the story of Muira and Lachlan. In this book, we get the story of Muira's older brother, Ewan, and his lady love, Muira's best friend, Cait. However, this book is a standalone; you don't need to have read "Beautiful" before reading this one...I didn't.

This story is extremely engaging; once I started reading I was loathed to put the book down whenever the need arose! It's nicely written, and Ms. Sterling does a good job fleshing out her characters. The story that unfolds is quite moving, and stirred me on an emotional level. I really cared what happened to the characters, and felt a real connection to Cait. Poor Cait; she suffers more than her fair share of heartache before she finally gets her HEA. That's not to say that Ewan doesn't have his share of sorrow, but at least he didn't have to suffer the torment of believing he had been betrayed by his lover--as Cait did.

When the story begins, Ewan, War Chieftain of the Cameron clan, and nephew to the Laird, has suffered a near fatal injury that forces him to face the reality of his mortality. As a direct result, Ewan decides that he wants a child...the only catch is that he doesn't want a wife. To that end, he decides to handfast with a woman for a year and a day in order to produce a son. He chooses his sister's childhood friend, Cait.

Cait Eversleigh is a servant in the Cameron household. Her mother, the daughter of former Cameron Laird, had run off with Cait's father, an Englishman, years before, only to find herself ruined, pregnant, and abandoned. After years of living in England, dragging Cait from one place to another, her mother abandons the young Cait, leaving the child to fend for herself. Through the kindness of strangers, the Cait makes her way her mother's former clan, where the Camerons take her in and give her a home.

Cait has been in love with Ewan for years. When he first broaches the idea of a handfast between them in order to produce a child, she doesn't exactly jump at the opportunity. Cait is smart enough to realize that when the time comes to give up Ewan, she will be heartbroken. Nonetheless, she cannot pass up the chance to claim Ewan as her own--even temporarily. Consequently, she agrees and the two are handfasted.

Pretty quickly the couple become adjusted to each other; although there is a bit of awkwardness initially, as Cait has no idea what is expected of her...she at first continues to perform her duties as a household servant. In any event, Ewan comes to discover that he likes being married, particularly to Cait. But, of course, the road to the couple's HEA is fraught with difficulties. When Ewan is named Tanist--subsequent to the death of his cousin--declaring him heir to the Lairdship, his uncle pretty much demands that he give up Cait. Not only is Cait half-English, and the Camerons are at war with them, but the man who is leading the attack against the Camerons is none other than Cait's father!

Reading how the couple overcome the many obstacles and finally achieve their HEA makes for a very satisfying read...but there are a number of twists and turns. As I read my feelings ran the gamut from anger, annoyance, despair, sorrow, and finally joy when Ewan and Cait finally got their day. There were times when I was really angry with Ewan, yet still other times when my heart broke for him. Though no matter how angry I was with him, I never stopped loving him. (LOL) He certainly has some difficult decisions to make! Cait; however, consistently elicited my empathy. Poor Cait! What she had to go through! In the end; however, Cait gets her much deserved HEA, and we even discover the truth of her parentage.

So, bottom line, I loved this book and would highly recommend it as a worthwhile read. As for the editing issues others have mentioned in their reviews, I didn't notice any. That's not to say that there weren't any, I just didn't notice whether or not there were any. I would think; however, that if there were any of significance I would have noticed them, as I am a stickler for grammar. FYI, this is not a clean romance. There is sex, quite a bit, graphic and hot! Happy reading!

3.0 von 5 Sternen Do not pay money for this book if bad editing annoys you! 23. Juli 2014

This is a good story with some good historic detail, but as many other reviewers have noted, the editing is super bad. I don't know the process on how a book goes from the writer to e-book but if the author and at least one other person had read or reread this the most egregious errors could have been corrected.
4.0 von 5 Sternen Marked one star off for poor editing 7. Dezember 2012
Von Karen Sheridan - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
Technically the editing was bad enough that I should take two stars off but, as it was free, I'm not feeling that stingy. The Cait in the middle of words like loCaite instead of locate (obviously someone did a find and replace on all "cat"s but didn't choose the exact match option), the fact there were no chapters and the poor use of pronouns throughout were the most frustrating. That said I really liked the characters and the storyline. It was engaging enough for me to overlook the editing - most of the time.

Cait is a young woman, past the age that one would normally marry in the Highlands. As a half English orphan she is a servant but she does not associate with the other servants and has few prospects of marriage. She has been in love with Ewan, the Laird's nephew, for over 10 years though he is unaware of this fact. When Ewan is injured in an ambush, he feels the need to have a son but first must have a wife. As he does not feel the need to settle down just yet he thinks a handfast is a great idea and thinks Cait would be the perfect candidate for future mother of his son.
The couple deal with racial prejudices, separation, war and deception before they can find their HEA.

Oh one other thing that bugged me was that the James sidestory wasn't tied up, even in the epilogue. It would have been nice after the hints to actually see how that piece worked itself out.
3.0 von 5 Sternen Spellcheck does not Caitch all errors... 31. Juli 2014
Von Bamazon! - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
Apparently the name of the protagonist in this story changed from Cat to Cait. Apparently, when the change was made, a Search and Replace function was used to make the change. What makes me think so? Running across words like these: loCaite, deliCaite, reciproCaite, etc.

It seems like too many people confuse spellcheck with proofreading - they aren't the same! There are so many errors that could have easily been corrected if someone had just read the entire book one more time after making editorial and proofreading changes - even the footnote to one of the edits was still in the book.

It's sad when my memory of a book isn't the story, but the abundance of errors contained therein. The author deserves credit for her efforts, not derision.
