Marcelo Garcia, winner of five Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world championships and a man many feel is the best pound-for-pound submission grappler of all time, unveils the secrets behind the most effective guard system in existence - The X-Guard. Unlike most jiu-jitsu instructional books, Garcia leaves no stone unturned. Not only does he show you how to sweep your opponent using the X-Guard from nearly every control position, he shows you how to do it both with a gi and without. Covering everything from grips to timing, this book will be a saviour to anyone wishing to compete in jiu-jitsu tournaments, no-gi grappling competition, or mixed martial arts.

It begins telling the tale of Marcelo's climb from the small rural village of his childhood and his first forays into Karate & Judo then discovering BJJ and eventually becoming a live-in student in a Jiujitsu Gym where His life was on the mat.
It is a book for the Jiujitsu fighter of at least blue-belt level and maybe purple as the white belt has enough to concentrate on with-out exploring all the specialist area's of Jiujitsu. That's how I would describe the X-guard.
Though there are a several techniques here which are essential to your game, having a mastery of Marcelo's entire strategy will take the reader many years of committed practise. I would suggest that those students with a similar build to Marcelo in particular, would excel from modelling their game on his as I have seen with several of my students.
In summation I would certainly recommend this book to Jiujitsu fighters and Marcelo fans alike!
I had the good fortune to see Marcelo debut in ADCC2003 as I was a qualifier for Australia .......
everyone knows who he is. I have observed EVERYTHING he has done be scrutinized & analyzed on the www
all of this never got me any further in the understanding of both the Buttefly& Xguards
Sure Everyone was showing something FROM those positions .........
How Do you GET there ??????!!!!!
Look no further ... this book has it covered ......
having also owned other publications by the authors I had no doubts
Ive heard criticism of there being "filler" techniques(ie gi / no gi )
In my experience and teaching those that are still trying to come to terms with the art a great reference point to improve understanding in differences in approach
All in all 5 stars a happy customer and even keener follower of this JiuJitsu legend
Congratulations to all who contributed to this book .....
