5.0 von 5 Sternen Wonderful book and curriculum! 24. Mai 2012
Von Daniel S. Wilson - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
After having read about, studied, and listened to African music, I thought I had developed a pretty decent understanding of the music. But having never actually played or danced, I knew I was still missing something. As it turns out, I was missing quite a lot! I bought this book to get an idea of how the music is played, and learn a little about dancing, but never expected it to be this much fun, easy, and informative! Just popped the DVD in, and I was sucked in! It's almost impossible to watch without wanting to get up and dance along!

West African Drum & Dance teaches the music the way it's supposed to be taught, through understanding the culture, as will as the art. With the DVD, it's simple, easy, and fun to jump right in. Getting to learn the rhythms, the drums, the dance, and even the music and language, all help to give a full, well rounded view of African art and culture. You feel as if you've gotten to visit and get to know a little about life in this African village, and your appreciation for the music and people will be exponentially deepened.

In addition to wanting to learn myself, I had hopes of maybe getting ideas on how to adapt some of the musical and rhythmic ideas to my own music and in my private guitar lesson studio. I certainly have, but in addition, I'm now considering learning more and teaching actual African drum and dance! There are so many great things any teacher or student of music, dance, or culture can learn from this, I'm certain you'll want to share it as well, once you've gotten into it!

I had no idea how much fun and how accessible learning these rhythms and dances would be! And it's suitable for virtually all ages, from elementary to oldest adult! Highly recommended to lovers of culture, music, dance, and life!
2.0 von 5 Sternen The dancing demonstrations are subpar and performed by a person ... 24. Januar 2017

The dancing demonstrations are subpar and performed by a person who "learned" the culture rather than was apart of the culture. Of all the west africans being filmed drumming and dancing and the authors couldn't find an AUTHENTIC dancer to perform the dances. I haven't really delved into the material after seeing that but I'm going to give it another chance.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Expand your understanding of West African Culture 29. Dezember 2009

Whether you are an experienced drummer/dancer, new to drum/dance, an educator or an xenophile, this is a great book to dive into. It is wonderful to see a well rounded presentation of one of the celebrations from one of the many ethnic groups of West Africa. You are exposed to the music, the break down of the rhythms, the dance steps, a few phrases in Susu, a little idea of the food and more. I love this book and hope the authors can bring us more books showing some the many other celebrations from the diverse cultures of West Africa.

Excellent book with a tremendous amount of wonderful information! I LOVED it! So have my students! Really enjoying putting all the parts of this piece together and we plan a performance in April! Can't wait! Its a group of 24 women playing African drums and percussion and these ladies rock the block with these pieces! I am really impressed with the book's format and the ease of following the suggested lesson plans to get to the finish. Very very well done! COngratulations, guys! And THANKS!
