    Politics, so I beginn to see, are no different to anybody's everyday life. Of course, Ben Rhodes was involved into decision making that would touch millions of lives. The circle of influence, to most of us, me at at least, is indefinitely smaller. Nevertheless, or so it seams, the same rules apply, in work, in life. A great revelation to me was: "you can’t change things unless you change the people making the decisions". Ben, do the next book. Best, Michael

    Obwohl ich selbst derartige "Memoirs" oder Berichte aus den inneren "Zirkeln der Macht" sehr mag, gehe ich doch mit einer gewissen Zurückhaltung an solche Bücher heran. Zu häufig dienen diese Bücher der Selbst-Beweihräucherung, der nachträglichen Korrektur der öffentlichen Wahrnehmung von politischen Entscheidungen ("spin") oder dem Weiterstricken an einer Legende.

    Dem vorliegenden Buch sind diese Schwächen in gewissem Sinne (natürlich) auch nicht fremd. Es ist unvermeidlich, dass Ben Rhodes, der wie nur wenige von Obamas engsten Mitarbeitern tatsächlich die ganzen acht Jahre im Weißen Haus ausgeharrt hat, ein fast durchweg positives Bild von Obama und seiner Präsidentschaft zeichnen will. Über weite Strecken liest sich sein Bericht daher auch wie eine Argumentation zur Erklärung der von der Obama-Administration vertretenen Politik, wobei sich Rhodes auf die Außenpolitik konzentriert, seinem Arbeitsfeld als Kommunikationberater im Weißen Haus.

    Trotzdem erfährt man einerseits über Rhodes und seine persönlichen Erfahrungen über die Arbeit im Weißen Haus generell, und andererseits über das Arbeiten mit Obama persönlich eine ganze Menge. Man darf sich das Buch aber nicht als strikt chronologischen Bericht vorstellen. Eher behandelt Rhodes einzelne Themengebiete und ihre Behandlung durch die Obama-Administration im Gesamtzusammenhang, so z.B. die Verhandlungen mit Kuba über die Öffnung und die Wiederaufnahme von Beziehungen, oder die Politik gegenüber Syrien und die Frage, wie die USA auf den Chemiewaffeneinsatz durch Assad reagieren sollen, etc.. Das alles wird in einer (auch auf Englisch) gut lesbaren Sprache erzählt, die knapp, deutlich und eher reportagehaft angelegt ist, immer unterbrochen von den eigenen Ansichten und Erfahrungen des Autors, der zudem immer wieder seine persönlichen Lebensumstände im Zeitpunkt einer bestimmten Entscheidungsfindung einstreut, was positiv ist, weil man sich so besser in die Handelnden und ihre Beweggründe einfühlen kann.

    Insgesamt kann ich das Buch sehr empfehlen, und zwar allen, die über die Arbeitsweise im Weißen Haus generell sowie über die Obama-Präsidentschaft im Speziellen einen Bericht "aus erster Hand" lesen wollen, der zwar natürlich parteiisch ist, der aber keinesfalls Kritikpunkte ausspart. Wenig erfährt der Leser über Obama persönlich, mit Ausnahme einiger weniger Gelegenheiten, in denen Obama nicht als derjenige dargestellt wird, der eine bestimmte Politik vertritt. Das Buch ist daher kein "Memoir" à la "Obama und ich", sondern eine persönlich gefärbte Darstellung darüber, wie die Obama-Administration ihre Außenpolitik entwickelt und präsentiert und ggf. durchgesetzt hat.
