Looking at the recruiting offers you get in 2020 some of this feels more accurate than ever. There is a clear chasm between companies who have learned from Google and those who have not.

Not everything that is presented as being so easy, is actually that easy to introduce or even possible for a company, but that does not mean you cannot learn a lot from those chapters. I worked in a start-up before my current position and some of the solutions in this book are simply solutions to problems a start-up does not have in it's earliest days.

However, looking at the larger company I am working now, I really felt grateful for the things we do right, and some areas I might not have even valued as much as before reading it as I have taken them for granted, when they actually aren't. Therefore a big thanks to all those that make those things possible.

I recommend this for everybody in IT who has not yet read "how Google works" a thousand times before, as most of the information in this book has made it into media and the web by now.

At times the book could be a bit more concise, likely just as this review.

Heard about this book in a podcast and wasn’t sure what to expect at first. After all I didn’t want 300+ pages of advertisement for google. But let me tell you it’s so worth the read! Working in people development I soaked up so many of his ideas. Inspiring although it’s about 8 years old! Still great examples that are easy to implement and valid for any company that’s not as visionary as google!

    Für jeden HRler ein Muss
  • Bewertet in Deutschland am 9. Juli 2021

Great insights, love it much better than HBR books. Gained actual practical knowledge because of this book. Giving only 4 Stars because its bit jammed with too much upselling of Google's achievements taking so much space in the book

I'm an upcoming Google SWE and my manager recommended me reading this book to get an idea of how Google works and more importantly, WHY it works like that (hint: it's not just that they have money to do that).

5,0 von 5 Sternen Excellent book for people running companies and managing people.
Bewertet in Indien am 9. August 2016
It is an interesting book with amazing stories of employee empowerment, importance of rewards and recognition, employee satisfaction etc. It gives an insight to what goes on inside one of the most successful companies out there. I would strongly recommend this book to everyone specially to those who are managing people and projects and are making decisions within an organization.

One of the most interesting thing about this book is that Laszlo has done a good job in conveying management tips by using real examples from Google. I was smiling most of the time while reading the book because I was able to relate to many things that goes in companies. Read it, I bet you will love it :-).

5,0 von 5 Sternen Great book. Very inspiring.

    Amazing book.

Google is not as unusual or hard to understand as people think - this book clearly shows that a unique philosophy, creativity, and lots of hard work prevail. Tons of fantastic examples which other companies can use, and a very good explanation of how to experiment and use analytics to create great people strategies.

I particularly found the discussions of people philosophy and the concepts of "nudges" powerful in today's business climate. Rather than tell people what to do (or not to do), Google has learned to "encourage" the right behavior without getting in people's space. And with such an intelligent and outspoken workforce, this alone is an amazing feat.

It's easy to dismiss Google as a company that makes a lot of money, so they can get away with anything. This book clearly shows that Google's success is BECAUSE of the way they recruit and treat people. While the company definitely focuses on engineering and intelligence as criteria for hiring, I think it shows how the work environment (and it's far more than the on-site bowling alley) that really makes Google succesful.

I found the book inspiring and very complimentary to research we have done in many other industries. Hats off to Laszlo for a very educational and important book for HR and business leaders in every industry !
