If you want to promote your organization, or if you are doing any sort of business on the Internet, then you know you need a website. The first challenge is, how do you build that website without knowing any computer code or having to sell your first-born to get a website built for you? The second challenge is, how do you get a professionally-designed and beautiful website built that won't cost you mega-bucks per month to maintain?

Because let's face it, it is hard to justify the high costs of building an elaborate website, when you are not yet sure a website will be a good investment of your time and money.

The good news is that there is a better - and much less expensive - way to get a beautiful website made, with just a few clicks of your mouse.

WordPress started in 2003, with the goal of providing ordinary people a simple way to build a website for free. Today, WordPress is being used on millions of websites, including those of many Fortune 500 companies.

The beautiful thing about WordPress as a website content management system is that it is a fully-customizable experience, and it is very easy to use.

WordPress Themes define how a website will look - they cover website layout, color schemes, font colors, and page display elements. With over 2,000 Themes currently available, it is very easy to change the appearance of a website. With just the click of a mouse button you can change the look, feel and layout of your entire website without affecting the content. What used to take days to get looking right, now takes only minutes.

WordPress Plugins add functionality to a website - what you want the website to do for you or your visitors. With over 43,000 Plugins available, you will find that you can make your website do a lot of specialized tasks for you or your visitors. And with the power of plugins, you can add functionality to your website - track users and what they do, take online orders, manage content in new and unique ways - and more. Again, all with the click of a mouse button.

Now a #1 Amazon Best Seller, this popular, up-to-date, step-by-step guide by expert Sarah McHarry will walk you through the essential first steps to building your own website or blog using WordPress.

What you'll learn in this book:

  • How to register your own domain and get the right WordPress hosting

  • How to install WordPress with a few clicks of the mouse

  • How to create a professional-looking, commerce-ready website with very little effort

Today morning, I started creating my first WordPress website just as a total beginner, by using this book. 8 hours later, I feel totally convenient with the basic functions of WordPress, thanks to the precise instructions provided in this book. (Admitted, my webpage had been installed already, so I could skip the first chapters.)

Highly recommended if you have no idea of WordPress and want a quick, uncomplicated entrance into this powerful web designer.

HASH(0x8fb6c4f8) von 5 Sternen A Great No-Frills Introduction To Wordpress - Perfect For Any Newb 28. März 2012
Von Matthew D. Brown - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
I use Wordpress almost daily.

All of my websites are built using Wordpress, I have built the overwhelming majority of my freelance clients websites over the years with Wordpress, and at my day job I am the principal web person responsible for more than 30 company websites (more than 90% I have built with Wordpress) - so I grabbed this book just out of sheer curiosity - and as a guide for bringing a beginner up-to-speed on managing a website built with Wordpress, it is great.

I use this book to help get the interns and content writers/managers who work under me at my day job acclimated to Wordpress so that they are able to take the sites I have built and use them without hesitation or mistake. None have complained, and now use the basic functions of Wordpress like old pros.

Now, if you are looking for a guide that will help you do things like create custom themes using your own HTML/PHP/CSS code, or integrate some features and functions that are not available strictly through the "intended" usage of Wordpress and various plugins, then no, this book is not for you (you will need one - or several - far more advanced and expensive guides) - but if you are just getting started with Wordpress and want to bring yourself up to speed on using it quickly and efficiently, then I highly recommend that this be your first resource.

HASH(0x8fb6c744) von 5 Sternen What I needed to get my site up and running 31. März 2012

I already had a basic website with my own domain name, but I was not happy with the format, as I found it clunky, limiting, and difficult to update. After doing some research, I decided to go with WordPress as my new format, and I switched over with my web host. I'm an artist, not a techie...although I have had experience with three other blogging formats and I've had an HTML class. I wanted to create a better looking website, as well as an accompanying blog within the site. I wanted to be able to easily change and update my web content. I also didn't want to waste a bunch of time and frustration by doing a lot of online research into free tutorials. I wanted a simple tutorial that would basically take me by the virtual hand and lead me through the steps required to make my dream a reality, without having to know or do a lot of technical computer stuff.

With the help of the author and the theme WPFolio, I was able to create a simple, clean, effective site to showcase my work. It's easy to navigate, and so far it's working with various devices, such as the iPhone. After I had downloaded WordPress with the help of my web host, I felt very overwhelmed, and I didn't know where to start. This publication was easy to read, easy to understand, and it helped me get an attractive and functional artist site up and running in less than 24 hours. If you are a complete beginner to WordPress, this will save you a lot of time and frustration.

This book is a must read if you are brand new to Wordpress and have no idea where to begin. Given her background as a programmer, Sarah does a great job of walking you through everything, from setting up your hosting account, to installing WordPress on your domain, to adding pages, posts, changing themes, SEO etc. I originally bought this book because I wanted to do a makeover for my family's Christmas Tree farm website. I had some basic html knowledge but I was looking for a platform that offered WYSISYG features and that wasn't going to involve extensive coding ( that stuff gives me a headache). The Wordpress platform suited my needs and at no point did I feel lost in going through the book. I am a visual person and the fact that she created a separate website ( keeping ) as the sample website for her readers to view was a godsend for me.
Now I will mention that there are a lot more things she could have included and perhaps elaborated on some of the more desirable features of Wordpress such as plugins, social media etc - but the point of this book is to get the basic idea of how to create a website on your own domain. If you want to take it further, she does a wonderful job in providing her readers with additional resources for Wordpress themes, plugins and mentions what she personally uses and recommends. Also she introduces her readers to an excellent hosting company, Hostgator. While going through her book I actually had to contact Hostgator because I was transferring my domain from another company, and that in itself was like pulling teeth - not fun and many hours spent on the phone. However, Hostgator's customer service is impeccable. They did a really great job of answering my questions and addressing my needs, especially after explaining to them that I was not an experienced web developer.
What really blew me away was the author herself. I have gone to Sarah's website,, reviewed her resources and recommendations and personally contacted her with additional questions. She was very prompt in her responses and did a wonderful job answering my questions. There are so many different books on Wordpress, but this is the one to get if you want to get a basic, not too technical but very clear idea about how to use this wonderful platform to create websites. Even better that when you contact the author herself she responds in a timely manner.

HASH(0x8fb6c9fc) von 5 Sternen A Must-Have For Any Wordpress Newbie 5. Februar 2012

I've been using WordPress for a long time, but still picked up a couple good tips from this book. It is short, straightforward and to the point. She leads you through everything you need to know to set up your blog quickly and in a nice step-by-step manner. She breaks the book up into 2 parts- a Quick Start guide and an In-Depth guide, which makes it especially nice for someone new to WordPress to get started right away. The In-Depth section is essential if you really want to make your WP blog do more fancy things. It's also good to review back later after you've set up your blog. The In-Depth section goes into things like selecting and installing a theme, adding pictures, galleries, posting, widgets and plugins, contact forms and even SEO (search engine optimization). Overall I enjoyed it and highly recommend it for anyone brand new to WordPress.

HASH(0x8fb6ca5c) von 5 Sternen Don't bother if you are the least bit technical (and probably not even if you aren't technical) 1. Februar 2014

This book was a real disappointment. Rather than being subtitled, "...even if you are a complete beginner" it should be subtitled "...ONLY if you are a complete beginner." (And frankly, I'm not at all confident that it's even a great book for beginners.)

From reviews, I had expected that this would be a reasonable starting point, even for people with some technical background, just not delving into more technical areas. It's not. I was hoping to start out finding useful information on evaluating different hosts, and sources of premium themes. Nope. The book does steer you to a recommended host (who I expect the author has some kind of commercial relationship with), but doesn't tell you what's important to look for in a host, if you don't want to just use the recommended company.

Then also, the book references examples with a website from the author. The copyright date on this book is 2013. The author makes a note in the book that she's going to keep the website up for readers to be able look at. I bought it a few days into 2014, and by then the domain registration had already expired. Several weeks later as I write this, it's still expired, so it doesn't seem to have been a momentary oversight.

Some of the first advice in the book: "Uninstall JetPack" (a plugin). Glad I didn't follow that, because I found JetPack --- which connects your site to -- to be extremely useful.

I gave up on the book less than half way through (on the day I received it), just ordered a wordpress hosting account from my existing domain registrar, and started doing things inside wordpress.

Whether you are technical, or not, I suggest that you skip this book. You'd be better off simply googling "wordpress tutorial." The results you get there will probably be much more useful for you. Heck, has its own tutorial that will serve most people better than this book.
