Der Verlag über das Buch
I don't want to mislead anyone here. "The Wiz Biz" is a combined volume containing the first two books in the "Wiz" series (Wizard's Bane and The Wizardry Compiled).
Why a combined re-issue? It's not intended as a rip-off, I can assure you. The short answer is the economics of publishing. Because modern paperbacks have a half life somewhat shorter than than a chocolate souffle, this is one of the few ways to keep a book available to the public.
In addition, due to the innate madness of the publishing industry (I refuse to call it a 'business') "The Wizardry Compiled" had become extremely hard to find.
(Why? I don't know. My publisher, the saintly Jim Baen, doesn't know. All we do is write and publish the books respectively. I mean it's not like we have anything to DO with them.)
So combining the first two books as "The Wiz Biz" made sense as a way to keep them available. Just don't buy them as if they were a new book.
The next Wiz book? Well, not for a while. I have a horror of running a series into the ground and I have a deal with several friends that if I ever write "Wiz 17: The Wizardry Gurgitated" they'll quietly put me out of my misery.

- Bewertet in Deutschland am 19. Dezember 1999The Wiz Zumwalt books by Rick Cook are very entertaining. I judge books by how often I go back to re-read them, and each book in this series has been read by me at least four times each. In the case of 'The Wizardry Compiled' and 'The Wizardry Cursed' a few more times each. Some authors produce series where readers continue to buy mainly out of loyalty to characters and the author's world (like Thomas Covenant: the Unbeliever, which by the time I gave up (after the second book of the first trilogy) I was moaning 'Oh Good Grief, when will it END? '), Rick Cook's Wiz stories are endlessly entertaining.
But then, as a computer programmer myself, I relate really well to computer languages as a form of magic!
He says he won't be writing any more Wiz books for the near future, but he better change his tune, because I have cooked up a really wicked geas, and it will make him start cranking them out unless he relents and does it: ONE MORE TIME!
Well, Rick Cook, whataya
Februar 2000In the first book, the programming is real, the characters are real, the action is great and the book is completely irresistible. Maybe I don't get out of my cubicle enough, but this is the best portrayal of programmers I've found in fiction. Most fiction deifies scientists as unapproachable intellects, where Wiz Zumwalt deifies himself while nicely walking the edge between bumbling techno-nerd and a character who's been given a little too much rope with which to hold a plot consistently together. To paraphrase MIT Computer Science professor Joeseph Weizenbaum, this novel satisfies any old time computer hacker's megalomaniacal fantasies of omnipotence, and then some.
- Bewertet in Deutschland am 14. August 1998This is probably the ultimate indulgence for computer geeks. Not only is it escapist fantasy, it also combines nearly all aspects of computers, from hardware to programming. The entire series (of which this volume is the first two books) is based on the idea of a world where magic can be "programmed" in code. While his fantasy writing is only so-so, the series works best when he's simply throwing out computer jokes faster than you can catch them. Basically what you might get if you crossed Dilbert with Lord of the Rings. Highly entertaining for Comp-Sci majors, although the uninitiated probably just won't get the joke. =->
- Bewertet in Deutschland am 25. August 1998This was the first Wiz book I read and was overjoyed when I found that I could get two books for the price of one. A great book for anyone who has spent over 5 hours glued to their computer.
- Bewertet in Deutschland am 27. Januar 1998I liked this book. It was entertaining and in parts very much like Tom Clancy (small parts but entertaining).
- Bewertet in Deutschland am 3. März 1998Two for the price of one! A good introduction to a mix of computers and magic.

Highly entertaining, a fun read...especially for programmers from a certain era. Melding fantasy and tech into a delightfully woven tale of magic and adventure.

AndersonBewertet in den USA am5. Juli 20054,0 von 5 Sternen A fun read
"The Wiz Biz" and the sequal "Wiz Biz II: Cursed and Consulted", about a Silicon Valley programmer transported into a world where magic exists, are fun and compelling. It's a clever idea and it is well, if not artfully, executed. The characters are types, but not stereotypes. The author, Rick Cook, while creating a beautiful, buxom mate for his main character, rises well above the kind of stereotype that would confine the audience for these books to young men. The world is well imagined and there's lots of humor. The more you know about about programming and the computer world the more in jokes you'll catch but there's plenty there for the merely peripherally geeky. Business schools could assign these books as a intro text to illustrate the reality of consulting, the pitfalls of charging in with a "great solution" before reviewing the current environment, the importance of considering the long term consequences before acting and the importance of creative thinking.
A good summer read.

I love the characters and story more as I read along. There are some mistakes here and there but they are just bumps in the road of a good story. It does need editing and correction. I do hope that there will be another book to carry on the series. Cheers!
