Reading Anna Gavalda's story collection, I Wish Someone Were Waiting for Me Somewhere, is a bit like choosing the mini-éclair over its full-size counterpart--while the smaller size makes each morsel that much more satisfying, you can't help but wish for just one more bite. Still, in many cases, Gavalda does a better job of capturing the essence of human emotion in each five-to-ten page story than many writers manage to do in epic novels.

Gavalda sets up every story such that each character's fate can be decided in a single moment. Whether the protagonist's pivotal moment is decided by fate or free will is what keeps these 12 stories fresh and unique. In "Lead Story," traveling salesman Jean-Pierre does not learn the true horrific consequences of an almost-missed exit on the highway until opening Le Figaro the next morning. The veterinarian in Catgut decides her fate in the instant after a brutal crime leaves her feeling physically and emotionally victimized. And when the mysterious stranger answers his cell phone on a first date in Courting Rituals of the Saint-Germain-des-Prés, our heroine decides she has heard enough to cut short what could have been a passionate love affair. ("I come to my senses all at once. Traitor. Ingrate.") It is in these crucial instants, where fate plays a hand, that Gavalda truly shows off her ability to convey love, longing, loneliness, and satisfaction. And perhaps the clarity of these moments is worth more than any full-size French pastry. --Gisele Toueg

4.0 von 5 Sternen Dorothy Parker, with a Gallic twist. 7. Februar 2008
Von David M. Giltinan - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
This collection of short stories by Anna Gavalda, a former high-school teacher and mother of two, won the Academie Francaise Short Story Award in 2000. The citation mentions the 'dry wit and almost involuntary elegance' apparent in the twelve stories. The translation (by Karen Marker, published in 2003) manages to preserve both the wit and elegance - these stories were fun to read.

Courting rituals of the Saint-Germain-de-Pres, a country vet's terrible revenge, an indelible encounter between a wild boar and a Jaguar which cannot end well: Gavalda's range is impressive. There are stories about longing and loss, a few almost unbearably poignant; others hilariously funny. Remarkably, in many cases, it's only in the last few lines that Gavalda reveals her hand.

Many of the stories reach the level of Dorothy Parker at her best, which is to say they are very good indeed. Gavalda shifts easily between male and female perspectives; in almost every case the result is moving, without being sentimental, and is told with a dry, often devastating, wit.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Very Original Writing Style 10. Dezember 2012
Von M. Smith - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
I really liked this book immensely. Anna Gavalda writes the way people speak, which makes the stories almost feel like you are sitting down and chatting with her. She is witty and audacious at times, which also adds to the charm. What I also liked was that she has some descriptions, such as when she is waiting for her date and goes into a bistro, and she makes you feel like you are in the bistro with her sipping rose and eating good hearty Parisian food. I think this book was just delightful and fun.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Love 10. Mai 2013
Von Bookworm - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
This is a beautiful book about love. The author wrote the stories in a way that was touching and relatable. Love doesn't always conquer all, and some endings aren't happy. It was a good reminder that life is messy, and sometimes it's sad, but it's beautiful too.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Gavalda 25. April 2013

This collection is one of my favorites! The stories are simple but still thought provoking. I chose this as a bookclub choice and it went over well there even with several men in the group. This can be a quick read with long lasting results. Highly recommend!

3.0 von 5 Sternen Not what I was expecting 17. November 2013
Von Andrea - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
To sum up in a word...perhaps "meh" might cover it. It's not bad, but it doesn't live up to the hype. Maybe that's the problem. But I don't think I'll be buying another book from this author - hard to imagine this is France's latest literary star.
