With this darkly intriguing original e-short story, Dean Koontz sets the stage for his masterly new novel of mystery, suspense, and strange wonder—Innocence.

“The world is a machine that produces endless surprises and mysteries layered on mysteries.”
Addison Goodheart is a mystery even to himself. He was born in an isolated home surrounded by a deep forest, never known to his father, kept secret from everyone but his mother, who barely accepts him. She is haunted by private demons and keeps many secrets—none of which she dreads more than the young son who adores her.
Only in the woods, among the wildlife, is Addison truly welcome. Only there can he be at peace. Until the day he first knows terror, the day when his life changes radically and forever . . .
Acclaim for Dean Koontz
“A rarity among bestselling writers, Koontz continues to pursue new ways of telling stories, never content with repeating himself.”Chicago Sun-Times
“Tumbling, hallucinogenic prose. ‘Serious’ writers . . . might do well to examine his technique.”The New York Times Book Review
“[Koontz] has always had near-Dickensian powers of description, and an ability to yank us from one page to the next that few novelists can match.”—Los Angeles Times
“Koontz is a superb plotter and wordsmith. He chronicles the hopes and fears of our time in broad strokes and fine detail, using popular fiction to explore the human condition.”USA Today
“Characters and the search for meaning, exquisitely crafted, are the soul of [Koontz’s] work. . . . One of the master storytellers of this or any age.”The Tampa Tribune
“A literary juggler.”The Times (London)

Das Buch ging spannend los wurde dann langweilig und hat kein wirkliches Ende. Das Buch ist für Koontzfans nicht zu empfehlen.

I am in a sort of a loss of words here to describe this tight and enthralling piece. In a nutshell, Dean Koontz's Wilderness is a short story that is well written with a gripping plot, awesome characterization, beautiful dialogue and absorbing setting. This is a work I will like to return to and get the full story. The intriguing opening chapter reminded me of the assassin scene in Flash of the Sun. Wilderness is also fast-paced.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Tease 5. November 2013

It's Koontz, so the writing is fantastic. The character is fantastic. It draws you in immediately. So, why the three stars? Because it's so short it isn't even a short story. It's just a tease to get you to buy the novel -- which I wouldn't even mind if this had been free, but at 99 cents I kind of feel ripped off paying to read an introduction to a character. And not even a full introduction, since you have to buy the novel to find out what exactly is going on with him.

Not really a short story but an intro to the upcoming book. Disappointing sales tatic. Not the way I prefer to be introduced to a book or to buy one.

5.0 von 5 Sternen An exciting prequel to an upcoming novel 7. November 2013

I read all of Dean Koontz's early works in the 1970s, but for some inexplicable reason, I never read any of his later stories. "Wilderness" was my re-introduction to Koontz, and I see that he still has a great way with words and the ability to write compelling page-turners. At the beginning of the story, I was reminded a bit of Judith Merril's classic "That Only a Mother," but Wilderness is an original story that serves as an introduction to the character Addison Goodheart, who will be featured in an upcoming full-length novel.

But even as a standalone story, Wilderness grabbed my attention and held it to the last word, as Addison tells his bizarre tale of growing up in seclusion with his mother. When a stranger threatens Addison's life, he's forced to use all of his skills to escape. It's a taut, suspenseful story of Addison's origins and his very strange relationship with his mother.

This short piece is very well-written and captivating. Eight-year-old Addison is so physically grotesque that his own mother can't bear to be around him and he so frightens a hunter, the only other human being to see him as he is wandering in the woods, that this man wants to kill him. This is a quick read, really only an introduction to Addison more than anything else, and a segue into Koontz's full-length novel, Innocence. Nevertheless, the progressive pacing and the mystery behind Addison's physical features to enrage others has you on edge. You also are wondering the whole time how monstrous Addison must appear that they can't bear to look at him.
This is one problem I had with the story--Koontz never shows us what Addison looks like. I found that a bit frustrating as he never does in the subsequent novel either, which makes the experience a bit confusing and hard to fully appreciate. Also, this short piece is so full of adrenaline so that when we get to the ending, that tension is so abruptly cut away from that we are left a bit in bafflement--not a good way to end the story. But the writing style and character development is stellar.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. Dean Koontz never disappoints. This story is about Addison, a boy who lives in isolation with his mother in the wilderness. He goes out walking one day, and runs into a wolf who warns him of someone being in the woods. Addison eventually runs into a hitman from the city, who is having a bad day. The man fires his gun at Addison, and a foot chase ensues. The hitman was scared of Addison because of his deformities. Will Addison survive? Will karma catch up to the hitman? You will have to read it to find out! I highly recommend this story to anyone who likes mystery and thriller!
