This book (or CD) details the tribulations for our most recent president - Al Franken. From the conception of his campaign to its end, the essence of the Franken presidency is captured for all to see in _Why Not Me_, by former President Al Franken.
When complaining about politics, people often say, "Don't look at me, I didn't vote for him." Well, I DIDN'T vote for him, and after reading this compilation of his speeches, diary, and media coverage, I'm sure glad I didn't. Here is why:
1) The ATM fees. Pres. Franken's most controversial issue. Sure, I lose 10%-15% of my income to the Bank fees, but that is the price you pay for living in a free society. Franken consistently distorted the purpose of these fees in his speeches and literature, all reproduced here. Banks don't charge the fees to make money; they charge the fees so the Freemasons can continue their subversive rule of the country.
2) Sex and Drugs. After the debauchery of the Clinton administration, it was refreshing to see a president who was candid about his sexuality and his (frequent) drug use. The problem? Franken and his inner circle were very bigoted in the types of prostitutes they choose to associate with. How can a man who is supposed to represent all of America only consort with women of a particular race/creed/national origin? What about the equality of men? Truly a disgrace.
3) Violence. Yes, there were some "Very Illegal" crimes, including some involving blunt objects. My question: can't the man who has his finger on the button figure out a way to hide his tracks better? Is this the type of person we should have had been running the country?
If you really want to know about President Franken, you should read (or listen to) this historic work. It allows insight into the short, but uneventful, presidency that we are still recovering from.

Rezension aus Deutschland vom 5. April 1999
Franken is a talented writer, but like so many "political satirists" he's neither terribly well read nor terribly well educated. This books starts out strong, but it's a one-trick pony. Franken was at his best in the short skits he wrote for SNL, when he didn't have to sustain something for more than a few minutes.
Rezension aus Deutschland vom 25. März 1999
The man is absolutely hilarious. For anyone remotely interested in politics, this book will make you laugh out loud again and again. The campaign diary, in particular, is one of the funniest things I've ever read. I find myself to this day, after having read it once, repeatedly going back to random pages to simply lift my spirits and bring a smile to my face. Franken provides sarcastic wit and intertwines political satire and sophmoric humor to create laughter on every page. It just cracks me up to think about specific parts of the book! I can't think of another thing written that spontaneously makes me laugh as much, as memories of excerpts from the book flow in and out of my mind from time to time.
Rezension aus Deutschland vom 16. Mai 2000
In this deliciously absurd work of self-parody, Al Franken brilliantly lampoons the "political process", American voters, and especially himself. The centerpiece is the campaign diary, and what many readers have seemed to overlook is that the running joke of it is that (as announced on the cover page to that section), in the make-believe reality of the book, the diary was later subpoenaed and published -- imagine New Hampshirites' reaction to his description of them as "a bunch of inbred mouth-breathers" and so on, and so on! With this in mind, it's quite a gas, although like most SNL sketches, it is kind of a one-joke run. The whole thing is as witty and subtle as you'd expect from one of the most adroit comedy writers in recent memory.
Rezension aus Deutschland vom 19. Januar 1999
Al Franken treats the current state of our political process with the right combination of reverence and humor. In a fictitious rendering of his 1999-2000 campaign and his short-lived stint in the White House, he shows that, just perhaps, he has what it takes to become the most powerful man in the world. His campaign is based on a simple issue that affects many of us--oppressive ATM fees. Heck, in the last election, less serious candidates got millions of votes. Laughter is good for your health, so if you're the kind of person who can see themselves asking "Why not Al Franken?" buy this book. Warning, though. If you hated Franken's previous book, this book will probably also go right over your head.
Rezension aus Deutschland vom 27. Februar 1999
This review is adressed to Mr. Franken who I hope gets to read it. Dear Mr.Franken I have nothing but respect for and your next masterpiece. You are the banner boy for our Liberal cause. But stepping aside from partiniship everyone must admit you are very funny. My only wish is that you keep it coming. You have shown me how pathetic some of Rush's and his dittoheads word's are. Your latest book has shown me by all means why aren't you president. I have told all my friends and family about your work and let me tell you you have quite a fan base. I hope that you get this letter and reply to it however let me just say to people thinking about buying this book should be cause you are the best. Sincerely David P. Washington D.C.
Rezension aus Deutschland vom 1. Juli 2000
This is a very funny look at our highest office. I was not allowed to read Why Not Me in bed. I'd laugh out loud, waking my wife, every few sentences. During the completely fantastic journey that is the "Making of the Franken Presidency", you'll swear (if you're familiar with Franken) that you can hear Al reading to you. His comedic timing is so precisely calculated, even in print, that 'audible pauses' are 'heard' as you read...and that's...okay. Credit his wife for having a sense of humor about this one. If you've enjoyed Al's work before, pick this up. You'll probably end up feeling like I do: Wishing that Franken's profile was higher.

Trial run for "Lies..."
Rezension aus den Vereinigten Staaten vom 20. Oktober 2004Verifizierter Kauf
Let's consider 'Why Not Me' a trial run for Al Franken's better written follow-up 'Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them.' All of Franken's work bears the hallmarks of his sketch comedy background - it's an ensemble of pieces, some of which work, some of which don't. In 'Lies,' roughly 80% or more of the pieces hit the mark (I wasn't a fan of the cartoons). In 'Why Not Me,' it's about 50%. Like the Bob Woodward parody ('The Void'), for example: funny for about the first five pages (you laugh when you see Franken's nailed Woodward's melodramatic scene-setting and habit of assembling conversations as if he were in the room). But it drags on and on. How many readers got though the whole piece? Not many I bet.
Like others, I agree that the campaign diary worked the best, followed closely by the faux Newsweek piece - the classic campaign shot of Franken chopping wood with Golden Retriever at his side is a howler. Talk about spot-on. I think the best part of the entire book is the 'one issue' campaign (elimination of ATM Fees) and how Candidate Franken steers all discussion back to that point. Watching both Bush and Kerry try to route every question back to stump speech set pieces makes you realize that there's sometimes a fine line between parody and reality.

Some things still pertinent
Rezension aus den Vereinigten Staaten vom 3. August 2009Verifizierter Kauf
This novel of political satire by now Senator Al Franken was published in 1999. Looking back from 10 years later, it is interesting to see how things turned out. There are some politcal positions of the "fictional" candidate that still apply and could be quoted, perhaps showing some prescience, such as "...America is the world's only remaining superpower, and with that comes some responsibility. We have to remember that the world is still a very dangerous place. Even a single war is one war too many, but we have to be prepared to fight on two fronts..."
It is not necessarily a great book, but might offer a little insight into the thinking of a person who is now a senator, intermixed with the fictional satirical tale of the rise and fall of a president. Senator Franken is obviously more than just a comedian/writer.
