Synopsis

During his lifetime, legendary martial artist Bruce Lee formulated a complex personal philosophy - a synthesis of Eastern and Western ideals - that extolled the virtues of knowledge and total mastery of one's self. However, most of his philosophical writings could be found only within the personal library of the Bruce Lee estate - until now."The Warrior Within" is the most comprehensive volume of these teachings, meant to help you apply Lee's philosophies to your own life. This unique guide reveals such life-affirming secrets as: seeing the totality of life and putting things into perspective; understanding the concept of Yin and Yang; defeating adversity by adapting to circumstances; and, tapping into inner spiritual forces to help shape the future. With a foreword by Linda Lee Cadwell and photographs and other memorabilia from Bruce Lee's short but celebrated life, "The Warrior Within" is an engrossing and easy-to-understand guide to the little-explored world of Bruce Lee. John Little has been identified as "one of the foremost authorities on Bruce Lee in the world" by "Black Belt" magazine.

He edited a three-volume series for the Bruce Lee estate and has written articles for several publications, including "Men's Fitness", "Official Karate", and "Inside Kung Fu".

Autorenkommentar

Bruce Lee as philosopher/thinker
The cultivation of the "Warrior Within" has as its first requisite the comprehension of a philosophical perspective that, to many of us in the West, will surely represent a brand-new outlook on life and on the ways of the world. This book is an attempt to present just such a perspective through the philosophical insights left to us by the late Bruce Lee. It has long been my contention that what set Lee apart from every other martial artist of his generation was not his physical prowess (as remarkable as this was) but rather his mind, and that his insights and philosophical perceptions have a much broader application than may have heretofore been considered. While many of us recall growing up in the 70s watching Bruce Lee -- the figher, or Bruce Lee -- the actor; now that we are grown up and, for the most part, with families of our own, it behooves us to take a look at the human being that lay behind the legend. What made Lee so successful? How was he able to overcome such obstacles as racism? And how could a man who only lived 32 years have been so deep, so insightful, and also such a prolific writer, a loyal friend, an attentive father, a devoted husband,a dedicated artist and self-help authority? This book answers these and many other questions about Bruce Lee and his incredible belief system and, I think, positions Lee correctly: not as "the baddest man on the planet", but rather as one of the most intelligent philosophical minds of the 20th century. My contribution then, if you'd care to call it that, is not to the substance of Lee's philosophy, which is entirely his achievement, but rather to the form of its presentation. My intention within the pages of this book is to take both the message and teachings of Bruce Lee and present them in a manner that will, hopefully, have some relevance to your life, whatever your occupation

Coming from a background that includes a long-term interest in martial arts, Bruce Lee and philosophy, I had a hunch that a book that combined all these interests would be good value.
I was not disappointed :)
John Little has written a book that is easy to get involved in and helps the reader to understand the differences between Eastern and Western approaches to living a satisfying life. By using smallish sections within each chapter, he has created a book that is easy to pick up and read for a short time and yet still learn a lot.
I particularly enjoyed discovering the contrasts between Bruce Lee's views and those expressed in the classic texts of Chinese philosophy, such as the Tao Te Ching and the writings of Chuang Tzu.
In short, a most accessible and enlightening book about Bruce Lee's "way of no way".

This book proves that philosophy can be both powerful and relevant to everybody's life! I'm a teenage girl who has suffered from low self-esteem but Bruce Lee's teachings have opened my eyes to a whole new way of looking at life! Now I see and..more importantly.. understand that we are all the same and that looking at others as "different" or "better" or "worse" than us is truly the mind's worst disease. John Little is a masterful philosopher himself to have seen and presented such a deep philosophy in such an enjoyable manner. And with this book, he has shared Master Lee's brilliant and penetrating observations on love, relationships, racism and life. What a mind-opening book. I call it "therapy for the sane!" Read this book and really get to know about life.

Excellent book by John Little to capture the essence and philosophical thoughts of Bruce Lee. His explanation of the way Lee thought and lived through his own personal study of Chinese and Western philosophy is made very clear in this book. Not only does the author explain Lee's thinking, but also puts in layman's terms as to how you can apply these same principles in your own life. Great examples are given throughout the book as to how Lee used philosophy to realize his own personal growth both in his own life and that of his fighting art of Jeet Kune Do. After reading this book, one comes to learn that Lee wasn't only a great martial artist, but also an extremely intelligent man whose mind was very sharp and keen. Until this book, I was not interested in philosophy, but after reading this, I'm very much interested in it, especially Eastern philosophy and the way that it can enhance my life and those of others around me. Excellent book by all means!

"The Warrior Within" is not what its title implies. I thought it would be about combat, but it is rather an engaging and profound work of philosophy that (unlike most philosophical works) is both a joy to read and full of extremely practical insights from a phenomenal human being -- Bruce Lee! Bruce Lee's philosophy is anti-external authority, indicating that the only light you need to "follow" is the light within your own soul. Unlike most of the "self-help," "new-age" type guides, this book is thoroughly researched and presented with a scholar's flair. Compelling and highly informative. If the material found within its pages is put to daily use, it has the power to change anybody's life for the better. This is what all philosophy books should be.

I have whole heartedly enjoyed reading this book and htas off to John Little for his efforts in the preservation of Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do, the philosophy of Bruce Lee. I have truly enjoyed all of his literary efforts thus far, both for content and the effot put forth in their organization. "The Warrior Within" is my all-time favorite book -- period, and one which I have recommended and bought for many people I know and care about. The wisdom found within the pages of this book is eternal, and once reading it, you have an appreciation for Bruce Lee that you never had before. Please! Give us more!

After reading Tao of Jeet Kune Do , and absorbing some of the concepts and applying them to how I view the world and finding it changed my life for the better , I was hungry for more Bruce Lee philosophy. This book does an excellent job of interpreting Bruce's philosophies and is an excellent supplement to Tao of Jeet Kune Do. A fufilling and enlightening read which aims towards the core of Bruce's philosophies--helping a person develop their own philosophy.
