In 1953, before any American studio exec used the phrase "high concept", Henri-George Clouzot's The Wages of Fear boasted a premise so literally explosive that audiences were excited before they got into the theatres. With an oil-fire burning out of control deep in the South American jungle, two lorryloads of highly unstable nitro-glycerin have to be driven through miles of unstable terrain littered with dangerous turns, crumbling planks, falling rocks and mediocre hardtop. One good jolt will vaporise truck, nitro, drivers and a substantial swathe of the countryside, so the company recruits desperate souls among the loser tramps who loiter around the nowhere town of Las Piedras, begging for any kind of work.

On the road, Clouzot stages a string of unforgettable sequences: one stretch of badly paved track can only be crossed by driving at under six miles an hour or over 40; a mountain turn requires that the trucks back out onto a rickety, rotten wooden structure; a 50-ton boulder has fallen into the road, and one of the drivers calmly drains a litre of nitro into his thermos to blow it up, only remembering when the fuse is lit that this will rain pebbles all over the countryside and a few good hits on the cargo will set it off. This is perhaps as great a mix of action-adventure and contest as The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, and still a textbook example of sustained suspense.

On the DVD: The print is in great shape, though the image is a little soft; the menu has a clever explosive aspect and uses the same vintage artwork as the sleeve cannily combined with a snippet. There are trailers for both Wages and Clozuot's other masterpiece, Les Diaboliques, as well as biographies of the principal cast, eight stills and three posters.--Kim Newman

    A socalled slowburn: it takes a while tot start the story. But once started you are with the characters all the way. Some unexpected character-developments that you may not like (but feel natural). And Do not be put off by it being French and in black/White.

    Irgendwo, irgendwann im einem gottverlassenen Kaff in Südamerika. Gescheiterte Existenzen lungern herum und gieren nach einer Chance, sich aus diesem Sumpf zu befreien.
    Die Chance eröffnet sich für vier Männer, als im 300 Meilen entfernten Bohrcamp sich eine Explosion ereignet. Das Nitroglyzerin, um die Flamme "auszupusten" lagert in dem gottverlassenen Kaff und muß zum Explosionsherd gebracht werden.
    Keine Spezialfahrzeuge, keine Schulung, alles muß schnell und einfach gehen. Da sucht sich der Ölboss die vier Gringos aus, bei denen im Unglücksfall kein Hahn mehr danach kräht.
    Unwegsame Gebiete, ein Sumpfloch, löchrige Holzbohlen müssen mit der heißen Fracht passiert werden, wo jeder Fehler das Ende bedeuten kann.
    Schließlich schafft es einer aus der Gruppe, sich die Belohnung abzuholen, aber er hat nicht lange Freude daran.....

    Der Klassiker aus den 50er Jahren zeigt vor allem Yves Montand in Hochform. Die Charaktere der vier Glücksritter werden hervorragend nachgezeichnet.Aber auch die Kameraführung und Regie sind klasse.Bahnbrechend für seine Branche zeigte er die Unerbitterlichkeit des "Friß oder stirb", heißt in dem Falle ...nimm den Auftrag an, egal wie er ist, Hauptsache raus aus dem Provinznest und eine Chance ein neues Leben zu beginnen.
    Fazit: Unbedingt ansehen; lohnt sich auf jeden Fall!!!!!

    Ein Meisterwerk, aber hier handelt es sich nur um die originale französische Fassung mit englischen Untertiteln. Den Produktinformationen nach könnte man denken, dass die DVD auch die synchronisierten Fassungen auf english, deutsch, italienisch, russisch und spanisch enthält, aber es ist falsch.

    30 years ago while stationed in England I caught the last half hour of "Wages of Fear" on BBC. Although I did not know the name of the film, it made such a favorable impression that I kept looking for it once I got back to the world; but it was never shown on American television. When William Friedkin made "Sorcerer" I was able to connect the dots and put a title to my elusive film.

    In many ways Henri-Georges Clouzot's film is a bridge between the Italian Neorealism of the early 1950's and the French New Wave of a few years later. Even more obvious is its link to early Hollywood Renaissance directors Arthur Penn, Sam Peckinpah, and Stanley Kubrick. Peckinpah pays homage to "Wages of Fear" with a similar introductory scene in "The Wild Bunch" and again in "Straw Dogs". Kubrick does it with "The Blue Danube" waltz in "2001", juxtaposing exterior shots of the moving space station with interior views of the stewardess serving a passenger (just as Clouzot cut between the truck cruising down the road and the party back in town). Penn was a little less obvious but the violent shifts between comedy and tragedy in "Bonnie and Clyde" can be traced back to a similar narrative technique in "The Wages of Fear".

    Most of the criticism about "The Wages of Fear" comes because Neorealism presents a more stylized reality than classic Hollywood narrative. The intent is to bring the ordinary features of the world into better focus by exaggeration. Expressionistically imitating reality while announcing that what is being shown is not real, the belief being that the more real the imitation the more fraudulent. Thus the use of narrative techniques that actually call attention to themselves. So the process of Jo (Charles Vanel) becoming a hero to Mario (Yves Montand) is shown through a montage of brief disjointed moments of connection. And Mario's journey from idolizing Jo to disillusionment and back to idolizing is much the same.

    Jo, Mario, Bimba (Peter van Eyck), and Luigi (Folco Lulli) are desperate men stranded somewhere in South America (probably Venezuela). They need money to escape so when an American oil company offers $4,000 to each pair of drivers willing to transport a ton of nitroglycerin (300 kilometers over poor roads) to a burning wellhead, they sign on for the job. Death could happen at any moment and the reactions of each man along the journey is compared and contrasted with what the viewer learned about them back in the village during the first half of the film. There is a certain foreshadowing as it is pointed out at the start that this is the kind of intense task where even the survivors will be permanently scarred emotionally.

    The four are not heroes, just a mixed group linked by a willingness to value themselves at only $2,000. The oil company (an American one) is able to operate in this remote region because there is plenty of manpower who share this mindset. The film is more anti- capitalist than anti-American and whatever political message it had in 1953 is more generic today.

    The cinematographer, Armand Thirard, keeps things claustrophobic throughout; in the dead- end town and in the cab of each truck.

    Clouzot sets up his most suspenseful sequence, where the trucks must back up on the unstable wooden platform in order to get around a hairpin bend, by having the first (smaller) truck narrowly succeed, heightening the tension as the bigger truck attempts the same maneuver.

    What establishes this as European art cinema is its willingness to break primary film conventions. Clouzot was free from the need for a happy ending and could let anything happen to his characters. Conventional narrative required that a character's narrow escape early in the film was because he had a purpose later in the story, but that is not the case with "Wages of Fear". You first realize the power this gives Clouzot when a stray rock rolls down a hillside toward a Jerry can filled with nitro. In this film such an ironic anticlimax is actually a real possibility.

    If you liked the original "Flight of the Phoenix" you will enjoy this film. And if you are a Peckinpah fan it is a must watch.

    Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child.

    Ce n’est pas la première fois que la British Film Institute nous gâte (voir la sublime édition de “Les Yeux Sans Visage”), avec cette fois-ci l’ultime édition de ce chef-d’œuvre de Clouzot, qui nous torture jusqu’à la dernière image. Mise en scène au rasoir, French film noir, personnages noirs, abîmés par la vie, torturés et torturant, dans un décor blanc écrasé de soleil et de chaleur. La peur omniprésente. Magnifique étude psychologique sans aucune concession. L’émotion-choc et le suspens à couper le souffle, sont là à chaque minute. Clouzot était un maître.

    Superbe édition blu-ray +DVD, film entièrement restauré avec les scènes coupées (152mn), en français avec sous-titres anglais optionnels, plus des heures de bonus en français ou anglais non sous-titré:
    - Commentaire audio du film par le critique de cinéma Adrian Martin
    - Yves Montand en conversation avec Don Allen (The Guardian Lecture) enregistrée en 1989.

    Built on a ludicrous premise - "We've got to move this sweaty unstable nitro over bumpy roads by driving so fast there's a bit less chance of blowing everybody up than if we drove slowly over bumpy roads.." ????????

    The film is exciting and positively scary and millions of times better than the English language remake.

    Proper matinée drama.

    Oh, it's in "Foreign," of course. My "Foreign" isn't good enough to enjoy it properly without subtitles, even if they're shouting but the process is reasonably transparent and the translation isn't too bad. Characters are somewhat stereotypically "foreign" too, which actually adds to the enjoyment. As I've hinted it all needs a hefty dose of suspension of disbelief as the logic is dumb - but the involving action makes that very easy.

    Watch it or the truck dies!!!
