I just finished reading Diana Gabaldon's Voyager. It is my first book of hers and lo, I find that there are two others that preceed it! This story of Claire and Jamie set both in the 1960's and in the 1700's, is a great read for anyone that loves Scotland and Scottish history. The period comes to life and Claire's unique outlook is both funny and fascinating. Like Marion Zimmer-Bradley, Diana Gabaldon is able to transport us back in time, making it come alive, making the people seem real. I lost myself completely in this book and am now reading her first, Outlander. I am not disappointed! What a great author, I can hardly wait to see what happens next to those wonderful lovers, Jamie and Claire. Even my husband loves these books! There's something for everyone, adventure, fantasy, romance, history. Summer reading at its best!

Voyager is a little slow going at first as with any epic tale, the writer has a duty of sorts to remind the loyal readers where the proceeding book left off and Gabaldon does that by slowly catching up with the lives (20 years later) of Claire, Jamie, Frank, Roger and Brianna, and Lord Grey.
I thought Gabaldon did a great job merging all the lives and stories together and did so fairly quickly all things considering.
Voyager is a poignant tale of two lovers finding each other again, embarking on a whirlwind journey filled with danger on the high seas and the constant peril of Jamie’s past catching up with them. As the third in what is now a seven-book series (according to the author there will be a Book 8, possibly a Book 9) of Claire Randall Fraser and her Highlander husband Jamie, the story is an integral step in a bestselling and surprisingly rich tale spanning the time from the Scottish Rising of 1745, to the American Revolution.
Though there were some moments in the story though that I struggled with but overall the book left me hanging in suspense and eagerly ready to start the next book. Most of my struggles came with the reconciling of the 20 year absence between Jamie and Claire and the some of the setting/scenery.
Spoilers: If you have not read Voyager, do not read on from here. These are some thoughts on this novel’s plot and the characters interacting in particular. Thoughts and emotions, I like to share about Voyager to people who have read this vividly rich epic tale.
Having them all travel to the West Indies was a mixed dynamic for me. Initially I thought it was a good plot twist and since next to Victorian/Gothic history my next favourite period is the British Colonial adventures (ie; danger and pirates on the high exotic seas of the Caribbean).

Outlander,Drangonfly in Amber,Voyager, and Drums of Autumn ... well what can be said Diana Gabaldon has captured the heart of the reader by doing something so simple, by putting some heat into the books. You can tell the time and effort she has given to the writing of these books has paid off. They are all touching, heart warming, and real. They capture the true raw emotions of the reader and steal the reader's heart and soul. She makes us feel what the charactors are feeling. Any woman who has read one (if not all) of the novels will tell you that Jamie is her ideal man. Gabaldon makes him real, so strong yet so needy of Clair's love. I know many women that either have found (like me) or are looking for their "Jamie". This is not your traditional romance novel, or even historical fiction, it is a work of art. I would recomend this book for anyone who enjoys emotions, reading or love. LOVE is the theme of these novels; simple, wonderful, and perfect.

What I loved about the first two books was the in depth historic insight surrounding the plot. The third book felt more like a Scottish version of the “Pirates of the Caribbean”. Also, even though time travelling is not realistic the first two books did depict a lot of very realistic scenes in the relationship between Claire and Jamie and on the small scale of the story, which was something that I missed in the last one.

Otherwise it was still a light and enjoyable read. Nevertheless, at this moment I really am not sure if I am going to read the fourth book.

It took some doing for my aunt to get me to pick up this series, but I am so thankful I did! I usually don't read romance novels, and since I thought this was one, I didn't want anything to do with it! I have seldom been so wrong! Gabaldon is able to craft a rich tapestry of charachters that you really care about, while keeping historical detail accurate and the plot moving. This series(especially Voyager)has something for everyone. I know men who enjoy theese books! For anyone who has doubts, bite the bullet and give it a try. You will be hooked!

Saw the TV Show and found out about the books. Read them within three month (part German, part English).
Enjoyed them very much and could not stop reading.
Looking forward to the books still to come.

When Claire had stepped through a circle of standing stones, she had traveled through time. She had been suspected as a spy, arrested as a witch.
Snatched by an unimagible quirk of circumstance from the arms of her first husband Frank Randall, she met destiny with Jamie MacKenzie Fraser her second husband. Three years later Jamie sent her back through the stones in a desperate effort to save her and the unborn child from the onrushing disaster that would soon engulf him - the Rising of the 1745 at Culloden. It brought the gallant Scots who raillied to the banner of Bonnie Prince Charlie only to come to ruin.
Claire didn't expect that Jamie would ask her for leaving him but for him there wasn't another way. He was a haunted man, never owing anything beyond the weapons he depended on for survival. Therefore, for him was the most important thing to know her save. But for Claire was to live without Jamie equal to ask her to tear out her heart and live without it. His memory has never lessened its hold on her yet. And she wasn't sure wich of the two possible alternatives was worse. To find Jamie had died at Culloden, or to find he hadn't.
I loved Voyager in all its emotion, desire, and passionate romance. Claire, Jamie and the other characters are fully drawn by Diana Gabaldon. I would be happy to spend another 1059 pages with them.
Jamie was an adorable man, he undeniably drew people. He didnŽt have only the striking height and Viking red hair, there was some attraction about him, almost magnetic, that drew everyone near into the glow of his orbit.
I admired Claires first husband Frank as a very decent man. He loved his daughter Brianna though she really wasn't his daughter. Even more, she was the only thing really important to him.
