My 10/10 mangaupdates review: The authors debut work Planetes was nearly perfect (the anime is sadly inferior) and this phenomenal follow-up is recommended to all fans of Berserk (10/10) / Historie (10/10) and historical fiction that can only be found on channels as HBO or European comics. The first volume is slightly uneven (it started as a shounen series) but is full of promise and soon becomes a ravishing drama about revenge, slavery, the price of freedom and overcoming the past. The mature tag isn't only earned through unflinching violence but also repents the deep psychological anguish some of the leads go through and the moody art is as good as one can get within monthly deadlines. The reviewers below may complain about the slow pacing of the farmlands arc and i understand but don't agree. The slow pace was needed to properly show the mundane insignificance of the life of a slave and chanbara classics as Kamui Gaiden and Vagabond further featured such arc which all managed to capture their respective protagonist's inner turmoil rather well. The series kicked back into a higher gear later and delivered the best volumes jet while introducing noteworthy female presence into the epic so get reading already and find out what this high praised masterpiece is all about. The recent and comparable Wolfsmund (9/10) is a must too and i also reviewed it.

I have been wanting to read Vinland Saga forever. I finally got a copy of the book for mother’s day and was excited to read it. It ended up being a very well done historical manga about Vikings.

Thorfinn was raised on the stories of the great Leif Ericson, who told tales of a land where slavery doesn’t exist...Vinland. Thorfinn dreamed of going to Vinland, but his dreams were shattered by a raid of Viking mercenaries. Now Thorfinn is being raised by the very Viking mercenaries who killed his parents, they are lead by Askeladd. Thorfinn is an excellent fighter, but he is still a boy. He constantly seeks to defeat Askeladd in a duel, but has yet to succeed. Thorfinn is sustained by dreams of somehow escaping his current situation and finding Vinland.

This was a very well done epic historical manga. Much different from other manga I have read. I really enjoyed the characters, the story, and the the detailed artwork.

All of the characters have a lot of depth and really come alive. You really feel Thorfinn’s anger and want him to succeed, he is a very engaging character.

The history in here is very detailed as well. You learn a lot about Frank, Danish, and English battles. There are also historical characters throughout (the obvious Leif Ericson, but also some kings of the era are mentioned). In addition to all of that there are brief recaps of history and recaps of where Thorfinn has journeyed to between each chapter.

The illustration is incredibly detailed and absolutely magnificent. I really enjoyed it a lot.

Overall this is just an incredibly manga, both in content and art quality. If you are at all interesting in history, war, or adventure I would definitely recommend this manga. It has a bit of an epic fantasy feel to it as well. I plan on picking up volume 2 when I get a chance. Highly recommended to everyone.

Yukimura is an amazing storyteller and artist. I couldn't put it down once I started reading. The characters have so much depth. The story is beyond interesting. The battles look awesome, whether it's two characters fighting or a whole army. I also like how the author doesn't shy away from how brutal Viking society was. I found that the facial expressions of the characters can be really moving at times, too. The characters, battles, and landscapes are drawn with so much detail. So much so that I have to stop and admire it while reading sometimes. The book itself is beautiful and well made as well.
.
The first book starts off showing what type of life the main character, Thorfinn, is living and then delves into what forced him into that life. It was a great way to set up Thorfinn and some of the other characters for book two and beyond.

I'm so glad I finally got this and the other books in the series. I had put it off for a while, but I wish I hadn't. I want to support it. Hopefully, we'll get an anime eventually.

I wasn't sure about this one, as I'd never head of it. Amazon suggested it to me based upon my buying history, and I was intrigued. I did a little research, saw some reviews, and ordered it. Read it within a few hours.

It's fascinating because it's fiction with some limited historical accuracy. It's much like Lone Wolf and Cub in that respect (some historical accuracy), though both manga are entirely different. Vikings instead of ronin, yet still makes use of similar themes; honor, revenge, assassins, etc. But the characters and source material are a nice change of pace and an interesting twist on manga.

I liked it so much that I ordered the second and third books as well. Some compare it to Berserk but I feel that the series are nothing alike. Berserk focuses more on shock and the supernatural, while this has little or none of that. Maybe the themes change as the series continues, as it's my understanding that the content went from shonen to seinen in the first year. Some of the images are almost Miura-quality in detail though, so I expect cool things from Yakimura as it progresses. I've always wanted to read his Planetes, though it's out of print. Maybe I'll try to source used copies.

~3.5-4/5

I have heard a lot of good things about this series, so of course I had to pick up a volume. It is definitely a pretty volume, hardcover with color pages—very nice to look at and hold. That in itself has made me want to collect the series.

The first chapter did not really pull me in, to be honest. It mostly had me confused—and I’m not sure if that was getting thrown into the Vikings world so fast, or if I just wasn’t in the right mindset. Because I took a break before reading any more of the volume, and when I got back to it, I was pretty hooked.

The artwork is very pretty, and very realistic. And going with that, the Vikings are pretty brutal. They’re violent, and they’re not afraid to be.

We meet a few characters at the beginning of the volume, mainly Thorfinn and Askeladd. Thorfinn is a young adult, and he’s a mentally wounded guy out for revenge. Askeladd is the leader of his troop, and a very strong warrior. And then we get thrown back to Thorfinn’s past, and we meet his family and see why he’s so wounded inside.

And honestly, I really enjoyed reading Thorfinn’s past. It’s very real, and heartfelt, and also horrible. His family and his village is great, and I really hope that we get to see more of them, especially his sister Ylva.

That arc seems to end at the end of this volume, and I am really interested to see where the story goes next. There are a lot of possibilities for the plot, and I’m excited. I’m impressed, and looking forward to picking up the next volume.
