4.0 von 5 Sternen This is The Easybeats 5th album, but the 2nd one issued in the USA 5. Mai 2014
Von Gerald Ramey Jr. - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verifizierter Kauf
There were only two albums by The Easybeats issued in the 1960s by United Artists record label here in the USA. The first one was 'Friday On My Mind' and the following year we got 'Falling Off The Edge Of The World'. 'Vigil' is the name of the album as it was called elsewhere in the world. The US version had 12 songs while the other version had 14. United Artists deleted 'Sha La La' and 'We All Live happily Together' from their version. They also took the picture on the front cover and put it on the back. Then they put The Easybeats' faces in clouds for the front cover. Confused? I was at first, then I realized it's the same record, sort of.
The hits 'Gonna Have A Good Time Tonight' and 'Falling Off The Edge Of The World (Seeing You With Him)' are on this CD. Depending on which country it was issue in, 'Gonna Have A Good Time Tonight' was simply called 'Good Times'. It seems the same songs and albums had different titles when issues elsewhere. The 'Friday On My Mind' album was also called 'Good Friday'.
The first track, 'Good Times', is the long version of track 15. Track 15, by the way, is a stereo mix of the 45 version of 'Gonna Have A Good Time Tonight.' The long version of that song is in stereo on the RHINO Records 'Easybeats Greatest Hits' from the 1980s. Too bad REPERTOIRE Records didn't include that version on this CD. But it still sounds good anyway. The 2nd track, 'What In The World' is also in mono. But it was in stereo on the original LP. The rest of the original LP tracks are in stereo. Bonus tracks 16 through 22 are different mixes in mono as well.
'We All Live happily Together' kinda sounds like a beer drinking song. For some reason, I picture all The Easybeats standing around a piano with beer mugs in the hands singing this song. I'm not saying the were drinkers, I just get that picture in my mind for some reason. Plus, each of the members sings a line in it and towards the end you hear the voice of Winston Churchill (?), the radio broadcast of the Hindenburg crash, and what sounds likes radio broadcasts from WW II, and then an air siren. Too bad United Artists deleted that and 'Sha La La' from the US release. If they had deleted 'Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You' and 'Hit The Road Jack', it certainly would've been a different LP.
I really like The Easybeats and have many of the CDs that are listed on Amazon. If you're a fan like me, chances are you already have this CD. If you're just familiar with the hits, this would be a good one to listen to.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Mixed Bag by Australia's greats 12. Februar 2001
Von Randall E. Adams - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I would rate this release three and one-half stars if I could. "Vigil" is a motley collection. Two tracks--the timeless "Gonna Have a Good Time" and "Land of Make Believe" come from a shelved album. For other tracks from the same promising source, see "The Shame Just Drained." The producer credit for the rest of the tracks goes to their road manager(!). At least some of the rest of the tracks sound like spruced up versions of their songwriting demos. "Falling Off the Edge of the World" and "Come In, You'll Get Pneumonia" are classics. The covers "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" and "Hit the Road Jack" are embarrassments. "Hello, How are You" is sappy. "What in the World" and "The Music Goes Round My Head" are good bubblegum. "Sha La La" and "We All Live Happily Together" are forgettable bubblegum.
At the same time that this very uneven record came out, the Easybeats were knocking out superior songwriting demos on a regular basis. A few are included among the bonus tracks and many more can be heard on "The Shame Just Drained." If you are already hooked on the Easybeats, you will find plenty to enjoy on this release, but if you are looking for a place to start, I recommend either "Good Friday" (aka "Friday on My Mind") or "Vol. 3." "Vigil" is just too spotty.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Easily the Easybeats' best. 25. Juni 2000
Von David Goodwin - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Although I'd hazard to say that none of the songs on this disc are known by the general public, surprisingly enough this album received a HUGE amount of praise upon its release. And even better, it lives up to that praise in spades.
What's here? Some of the Easybeats most solid performances and songs. They eschew their earlier, quirkier material, and go for a more basic, rock n' roll-esque approach (even going so far to have Steve Marriot scream out the choruses on "Gonna Have A Good Time"). Best of all, most of it works; "We All Live Happily Together," an odd bit of social commentary, is an intelligently done track, and "Land of Make Believe," "Falling Off the Edge of the World," and "Come In You'll Get Pneumonia" are wonderful tracks. Give it a try.
As this is a relatively old release from Repertoire, not much information is given in the liner notes. However, the BONUS tracks are quite worthwhile, and thus the Repertoire issue is the one to get.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Some good tracks. 14. August 2000
Von Ein Kunde - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Some good tracks and some iffy ones. The Easybeats get a bit of vocal help from the lead singer of the Small Face's on "Good Times"."Hello How Are You,Land of Make Believe and Bring a Little Lovin" are good tracks, but it is still a mystery to me how the Easybeats could record junk like "See Saw" and leave eccellent unreleased(internationally) sure-hit tracks like "Sorry" and "I'll Make You Happy" on the shelf and unknown. Why,oh Easybeats why??
