I have to say that I am really glad I read the review here stating these as being superior to the KSO in every way. I listened to this advice and you should too.
I wear a 44 in KSO and based on the other reviews saying to get these a size up, ordered them in a 46. They were wayyyy too big, basically loose across the bridge with about an extra inch in the heel cup, no way. I returned them for a 44 which is my original KSO size and they fit perfectly. Took about one session of an hour to break them in entirely and now they feel the same every time I put them on.
These feel a lot more like what I originally expected from the KSO. The ground feel on these is amazing. They are so light and flexible and strong it is really quite amazing. They breathe so much easier than the KSO and do not absorb nearly as much sweat and funk. The lack of hanging tabs at the heel, tightening strap across the bridge and doubled over fabrics at various points reduces the weight and overall drag on your foot significantly versus the KSO. That being said I would not wear these outside hiking on a trail or playing disc golf or anything of that nature. A stray twig or branch would surely and immediately puncture right thru the very thin material that makes up the body of the shoe. I only wear them inside.
I find them perfect for lifting weights, particularly for squats and deadlifts. I work out in them 3 times a week and I clean them in the sink with cold water and a little laundry detergent and set them outside to dry on Saturday.
I bought these for $59 and at this price even if they fail and delaminate after a year I would still buy them again. I love everything about the way they feel and function, absolutely perfect.
I wear these a couple hours a week, indoors only. The sole began to separate from the shoe only a couple months after purchase.
I contacted Vibram and they informed me there's nothing they can do past a 90-day warranty (guess I shouldn't have waited to file a claim).
Still, minimal use and the sole begins to separate...? For this kind of $$$ I expect higher quality.
1. Sole separation
2. You can see the shoes are not well worn
Now that I have adjusted, and developed my body from the knees down, i wear these everywhere on any terrain, including running or hiking up and down very steep rough/loose trails or even backcountry mountainside (w/o trails) often with 50+lbs of weight on my back. I can't really imagine demanding more from them than I do (unless i were a much larger man) and the only pairs i've really damaged or ruined, I did so being careless and/or they were already worn past the treads/a reasonable lifespan.
I've spent at least the last decade priding myself on my well rounded and practical fitness. It was not until I upgraded (from expensive padded foot casts) and started training with these that i realized how deluded that notion was. Functionally, (with these) i can feel and adjust how I disperse my weight, in such a way that I can ascend/descend (safely, in a controlled manner) inclines that I would not attempt with an inch of mushy foam/rubber (ie:shoes or boots) between me and the loose earth fragments i'm balancing my life on.
What more can I say, modern culture has failed us in many ways, often in exchange for nothing more then an illusion of comfort.
Happy struggles to you!
I love the barefoot feel, and being able to feel everything. My toes are free, and I feel lighter on my feet.
I want to run them but I want to rock as well cause of the way they feel on my feet and i don't wanna ruin them so I just workout in the treksport joints, which are a sz.46, and my el-x are sz.45.
I like the glove feel for my feet. Idk about wearing these in the cold but that's why they have the wool cvt.
