Auf Grund verschiedener Empfehlungen und Rezensionen habe ich mich für diesen externen BluRay Brenner entschieden. Hauptargument war auch die Möglichkeit 4K BD abzuspielen. Verbatim hat hier ein Pioneer Laufwerk verbaut. Unter Ubuntu Linux 24.04.1 wurde das Laufwerk ohne Probleme vollumfänglich erkannt. Auch die Linux Brennsoftware K3B hat das Laufwerk sofort erkannt.
Laufgeräusche sind keine zu hören und die Verarbeitung im stabilen Alugehäuse macht einen wertigen Eindruck.

Dieses Verbatim/Pioneer Laufwerk ist extrem schnell und spielt problemlos 4K BluRays ab. Voraussetzung ist ein angeschlossener 4K Bildschirm mit Grafiktreibern, die 4K unterstützen. Mein Laptop hat nur ein internenes FullHD Display. Hier spielt der BD keine 4Ks ab und gibt eine Fehlermeldung aus. Am stationären PC mit 4K Monitor werden 4K BDs problemlos abgespielt.

Nachdem der Brenner zeit- und termingerecht angeliefert wurde, verband ich ihn zunächst mit einem eigenen, weil länger als das mitgelieferte, USB C an USB A Kabel an den PC. Ein separates Netzkabel ist weder anschliessbar noch von Nöten. Die Lade ist für solche kompakten Geräte gewohnt spartanisch. Sie lässt sich auf Knopfdruck mechanisch öffnen. Das Gerät ist zwar mit "Verbatim" gelabelt, ist jedoch technisch ein Pioneer BDR-UD04 extern. Ich war einigermassen überrascht, als ich sodann feststellte, dass, unabhängig von der Brennsoftware, die Schreibgeschwindigkeit stets auf 2x limitiert war. An Rohlingen verwendete ich eine ebenfalls bei Amazon erstandene, preisgünstige 25er Cakebox der Marke Primeon (bedruckbar). Sowohl der Verbatim Brenner als auch die Rohlinge werden mit einer Brenngeschwindigkeit von 2x bis 6x, bzw. 8x (Rohlinge) beworben. Da ich diese auch mit LG Brennern verwendet habe, wusste ich, dass 6x grundsätzlich möglich sind. Spontan ersetzte ich das eigene USB Kabel durch das kurze mitgelieferte Expemplar, schloss es an einen der vorderen USB 3 Anschlüssen an et voilà - die Brenngeschwindigkeit liess sich nun von 2x bis zu den spezifizierten 6x auswählen. Grund für den Wechsel auf diesen Brenner war, dass meine mittlerweile betagten LG Brenner - welche über Jahre hinweg allesamt hervorragende Brennergebnisse mit verschiedenen Labels lieferten - seit 2020, bzw. 2022 keine Firmwareupdates mehr anbieten. Zuletzt hatte ich damit einen Ausfall von ca. 50%(!). Nach nunmehr ca. zwei Wochen der intensiven Nutzung des Verbatim Brenners lässt sich festhalten, dass kein einziger Rohling mehr verbrannt wurde. Auffallend ist, dass der Brenner beim Layerwechsel - jener Stelle, an welcher die LG Geräte meistens scheiterten - kurzfristig den Buffer leert, um ihn dann innert ewenigen Sekunden neu aufzubauen und den Brennvorgang bis zum Schluss durchzuziehen. Der Umtand, wonach der Brenner den Strom ausschliesslich aus dem USB Kabel bezieht, welches ja auch noch den Datenaustausch sicherstellen muss, dürfte wohl der Grund dafür sein, wieso die Scheiben, trotz 6x Auswahl, maximal mit 4.3 facher Geschswindigkeit gebrannt werden. Somit dauert der Brennvorgang für einen BDR-DL Rohling ca. 45 Minuten. Eine durchaus akzeptable, wenn auch nicht die suggerierte Brenngeschwindigkeit. Die Rohlinge lassen sich danach auch auf anderen Laufwerken fehlerfrei auslesen. Der Preis geht in Ordnung (um 80 Euro). Ich erlaube mir, einen Stern abzuziehen, weil trotz allen hervorragenden Eigenschaften und Brennergebnissen die Rohlinge letzlich maximal 4.3 fach gebrannt werden.

Out of the box, LibreDrive aktiviert und was mir besonders gut gefällt, es liest auch problemlos alle DVDs. Damit hatten meine beiden internen BluRay Laufwerke nämlich Probleme. Von gutem bis schlechtem Zustand ließt dieses Laufwerk alle eingelegten Medien bisher problemlos. Auch die total verkratzten Dinger aus der Bücherei. Und auch wenn es auf dem Papier langsamer ist als meine beiden anderen BluRay Laufwerke, ließt es alle Medien schneller ein, als meine beiden 16x Laufwerke. DVDs brauchen 10-12min, BluRays 23-30min (je nach Filmgröße) und 4K UHDs um die 45-50min mit Make MKV. Es wird dabei nicht allzu laut und heiß. Das Anschlußkabel belegt nur einen Port (manche haben ja ein Y Kabel für Strom und Daten). Zur Rutschfestigkeit liegen 4 optionale kleine Antirutschfüße bei, die man ankleben kann. Das Kabel könnte ein wenig länger sein, aber von allen getesteten Laufwerken ist dieses hier für mich das Beste. Für 75€ kann man hier nichts falsch machen.

It's actually a Pioneer drive with the 1.14 firmware with LibreDrive support for making Fair Use backup copies. Works great for 1080p and 4K Blu-Ray discs.

Comes with the USB 3.0 C-to-A wire but you can use a USB-C (or even Thunderbolt) cable with it. Just make sure that your cable is USB 3.0 for maximum speed and power delivery.

I bought an LG which was cheaper--had all kinds of issues. So I got the Verbatim. Comes with an external power supply b/c Blu-ray requires more power than you can normally get over USB. And it includes a BR disc to try it out. Very easy to use. I've been making Blu-ray Millennium discs all day--very fast. These play back (on a BR player) with no issues at all. As to software, I highly recommend Ashampoo's Burning Studio. (Weird name, but they're German). Easy to use, lots of options if you need them. And it's cheap, too. Works without too much fiddling. Also excellent customer service (turned out to be the LG burner...).

I got recommended this model a lot, and I have to say it was a solid and hassle-free choice. Just plug it in and it plays blu rays no problem. Haven’t tried it on dvds yet though. Slim and comes with the cable to link it to my laptop.
