"Many people know about our farm, Beekman 1802; but we hot our start growing heirloom vegetables on a rooftop in Manhattan...Urban Farming would have made our transition from city to country living much easier. A great guide for urban Farmers everywhere!" - Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Brent Ridge, stars of The Fabulous Beekman Boys (Planet Green)

"Covering everything from soil to bees, Urban Farming provides both practical advice and inspiration. Whether you've got a rooftop or a big suburban yard, you'll be motived to get out your shovel." - Erik Knutzen, co-author (with is wife Kelly Coyne) of The Urban Homestead and Making It: Radical Home Ec for a Post-Consumer World

"Urban Farming is a fantastic resource...Its detailed, readable text and beautiful photographs will make it an indispensable asset to the Urban Farming movement." - Scott Kellogg and Stacy Pettigrew, authors of Toolbox for Sustainable City Living.

Kirkus Reviews' Gardening Blog... "Fortunately, Thomas J. Fox’s Urban Farming: Sustainable City Living in Your Backyard, in Your Community, and in the World is written for grown-ups. It considers politics and history as well as how-to, and informs me that as late as 1860 there were 50,000 hogs in Manhattan. And Fox actually sounds like an urban sophisticate. Before offering advice on fruit tree diseases, he advises, “Get yourself a drink and sit down.”

HASH(0x937438c4) von 5 Sternen Best-researched gardening book I've seen in a long time 4. Januar 2012
Von Lee B. Jolliffe - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
I'm a avid urban "farmer" with chickens, and I've prowled through all the "best tips" and "great ideas" gardening books, from Jeavons' "grow biointensive" work to Rodale's many offerings to even some horticulture textbooks and often the university agriculture research work.

This particular book offers a worldwide view of WHY we need to learn to grow our own food on our own properties (or nearby). Then it moves into suggesting the most effective ways to do this.

If you already garden for food, you'll find the "how to grow xyz" is not that useful, though the photos are gorgeous.

What I appreciated most was that all the information and all the growing advice was backed up by actual research by a global array of experts. (Versus the gardening tips books that so often recycle bad advice, most notorious being the TERRIBLE idea of tearing all the leaves off your poor tomato transplants and burying the stem so it "forms more roots". The truth is, this sets back your tomato harvest by two weeks, makes all your tomatoes smaller, and yields about the same weight in produce, according to research done at Cornell.)

I also appreciated simply finding out how many large companies, big cities, and major research institutions worldwide are engaged in the same project I am here at home: Working to grow food more locally, more sustainably, and more safely.

I think the pictures were the first things to astonish me -- varied, helpful and beautiful. I love the combination of history of the urban farming movement and the practical applications for both the beginner and the experienced gardener. Finally Tom Fox's writing is delightful -- clear, with an easy flow and with just the right humor. I've given this book to several friends.

HASH(0x9374390c) von 5 Sternen Not enough info 27. Juni 2012
Von Matt Barr - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
This would be a good book for someone who isn't convinced they want to start urban farming and has never seen a plant before. The first five chapters basically are a cheerleading section for farmers. The rest has good info but not nearly enough. It also will not teach you any basic skills you need to know to grow plants. The author is a lawyer maybe he should have written an urban law book.

As a fellow gardener with passion for gardening around my house, this book is just sensatonal with great ideas, pictures, and gardening tricks, especially about vegetables and fruits.

It is quite obvious that Tom Fox knows what's he's writing about, and most important, for the reader and gardener, easy to understand.

If you want to create a mini farm around your house, or simply want to grow a few vegetables, this book will be your bible.
