There were a lot of good things I liked about this book and also a few things I didn't. The few things I didn't like about the book are minor inconveniences. The first thing for me were the beginning chapters only because they were for beginners of Android and Unity which is what the book is supposed to be for so that didn't bother me. I thought the examples in the book could have been a little better but they were okay for a beginner book. The other thing I didn't like too much was that for some of the book, you need to have Unity Pro in order to complete some of the examples fully, but you can still use the free version of Unity and have complete examples, so the good greatly outweighed the bad.
The books examples were explained pretty well and I liked that they continue on with existing examples in the later chapters so you can expand on them. It also explains the differences between the pro version and the free version of Unity and why you would need or want the pro version. This book is very good for beginners of Unity and Android because the examples are very clear and are explained in good detail, but you should be somewhat familiar with C# before reading. I also like that this book teaches by example and shows each example step by step which helps in the learning process.
Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book and I would recommend it if you want to learn about Unity and Android and start creating games.
The book was made in an interesting way that each chapter directly continues to what we learned in the previous enriched with illustrations and screenshots that guide reader and help in verifying that reader is progressing in the manner and speed as it was intended. Although I come from the IT world, I had not had any experience with Unity3D, therefore it was interesting to see whether the book really rightly bears the name that is for beginners - and I am pleased to say that it is so.
From the first chapters it’s obvious that author made this book for someone completely new in this development so if you're already at more advanced levels of knowledge you can feel free to skip the first few chapters. After going through its more than 300 pages, reader/developer will get a solid amount of knowledge that will enable him/her to understand not only the basics but also more advanced levels of development in Unity3D for the Android.
It's great that the author has offered three complete projects on which it is possible to improve your knowledge due to the detailed explanation and nicely presented examples. And also nice add-on was explanation of some major differences between the Unity3D free and pro version so that the user can decide which version will be needed.
Therefore, this book could be fully recommended to people interested in games development on Android providing good foundation for further development of programming skills.
3 large detailed examples to work through, really impressed by the content detail and layout. There are some poorly explained game logic sections but since that's not the focus of the book I easily forgive it. (a couple of very clever blocks of code that do in 2 lines what I would have done in 20, my c# skills are pretty beginner)
Highly recommended if you're interested in using unity to develop for android.
Just make sure you have spent a little time with C# first. =)
As you go through the book you are taken through 4 different game types and samples that take you through various different topics all related to not just Android Development, but Mobile development in general.
The first game takes you through the GUI Functions of Unity as well as theming and layout, the second game takes that a bit further but adds a 3D touch to a 3rd person combat game with a little AI. This leads to the third game which expands on the controls and hardware of most modern phones and adds tilt controls to a 3rd person flying combat game. And the final game introduces Physics to a classic game that we all know with a clone of "That Bird Game that knocks things over".
Overall I liked the content and topics covered in the books, the author presented all of the topics really well and had them flowing as you moved forward. I personally would have liked to see the use of dynamic controls on the screen. For example having the controls for movement invisible and them appear as the user touched a zone on the screen.
The book was well written and I would recommend it for all beginners to the trade and topics, well worth the read.
As an instructor of software programming I truly appreciate the very methodical and progressive approach this book takes. With each chapter you build, gradually, on information (and hands-on illustrations) from previous chapters.
Although I have experience with Unity3D, I have never explored development for the Android platform. Additionally, there are aspects of the Unity3D platform that I was not aware prior to reading this book!
This book contains very thorough and clear explanation of the specifics to Mobile (Touch, Tilt). No other books I have seen on this subject has given this much attention to that.
After completing this book you will not only have a very strong knowledge and understanding of Unity3D development for the Android platform, but also the foundation of a several fun games on which to build and grow your expertise.
