Undercover lays bare the deceit, betrayal and cold-blooded violation, practised again and again by undercover officers - troubling, timely and brilliantly executed. -- Henry Porter Overexcitable publishers like to bandy around words such as "explosive" and "shocking" when trying to flog their books, even though generally you could substitute them for ones such as "mildly interesting". Not with Undercover, though ... doggedly written and researched by Guardian journalists Rob Evans and Paul Lewis, the revelations in its pages are genuinely explosive ... it's the steady accumulation of detail that's so compelling. The testimony of person after person who was taken in, deceived, gulled, who knew the officers for years - who thought of them as best friends, or lovers, or life partners, or the father of their children, who had no inkling that they were part of an elaborate state-sponsored spy-ring that intruded on the most intimate parts of their lives. -- Carole Cadwalladr Observer Undercover is not just a book; it's a sensation ... it's terrific and important journalism. -- Jenni Russell Sunday Times Were these stories not real, they would read like an airport thriller ... Undercover compels the reader throughout, which is a testament to the investigative and writing skills of Evans and Lewis ... The work of these authors is one of the best arguments in favour of a free press you'll ever read. -- Alan White New Statesman What makes this book so utterly absorbing is not the politics or policing, but the people. -- David Aaronovitch The Times With luck, the grotesqueries revealed in this powerful book will fire some of the old free and radical British spirit again. -- Bernard Porter Guardian -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine andere Ausgabe: Taschenbuch.

Format: Taschenbuch
This important book narrates the work of some 10 British police officers sent under assumed identifies to infiltrate animal rights groups, ecology protest movements and similar non-criminal, non-violent political action organisations in order to spy on their plans and intentions. While far too few in numbers to raise a general alarm about a British "secret police" comparable to those bred by communist and right-wing dictatorships, these operations show an unsettling disposition in the British police service to exaggerate the threat so as to justify despicable tactics and bloated expense accounts. The reader must assume that the British domestic espionage programs disclosed in the book have their counterparts in other nominally liberal countries. Indeed, the eagerness with which the police services of Germany or France welcomed the temporary deployment of the British undercovers to report on protest movements in their jurisdictions is a strong indication of the existence of an inernational police underground in which various undercover hands wash each other.

The relative innocence of the targetted groups contrasts sharply with the devious and unprincipled behavior of the undercover officers, who deliberately start and maintain -- sometimes over several years -- marriage-like relationships with women protestors as a way of gaining access to the target and enhacing their credibility as like-minded political activists. Some readers might find the detailed evidence of these abuses overdone in relation to the more profound questions of how far "preemptive policing" may go in a society that wants to be and remain democratic.

Format: Taschenbuch

5.0 von 5 Sternen Police Spies Within Law-Abiding Protest Groups 14. Oktober 2013
Von PPRA - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
Though I don't ordinarily write reviews (this is my first), this book was so excellent I had no choice but to post my impressions. It was written by two Guardian reporters.

The book details forty years (and continuing) of the British having their police infiltrate protest groups--most of them law-abiding and PEACEFUL--such as groups concerned with climate change, nuclear weapons, economical inequality, animal cruelty, etc.

The spies (usually male) the police planted within these groups would pose as friends, usually taking lovers from among the female members of the group. The assignments were meant to last for a number of years, not months or weeks. The agents were rarely ever caught by the activists, but then the police had given their spies very elaborate new identities with false driver's licenses, passports, etc. Additionally, these agent provocateurs had several years to worm their way into positions of responsibility within the groups.

Frankly, I was shocked at how difficult it would be to detect these spies. The question then arising in my mind was have these same tactics crossed the ocean to our shores (USA). That local and federal police have and do illegally infiltrate peaceful and innocuous protest groups is a given, but have they taken it to the level the British have?

I highly recommend this book, and anyone who supports or belongs to a lawful protest group needs to read it.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Comprehensive history of a secret police unit 7. August 2013

This book reviews the history of two of Britain's police secret units, which targeted dissidents and engaged in undercover activities against non-violent protestors. The crimes aren't shocking if you're familiar with the Stasi, for instance, but it's jarring to see a liberal democracy using these tactics.

this book was. to me, absolutely mind blowing. we were brought up to trust the police, and to respect them. as one reads this one falls faster and faster down the rabbit hole. I hope that in the near future, the police force will regain some of their standards.
