Under the Empyrean Sky (The Heartland Trilogy Book 1) (English Edition) Kindle Ausgabe

4,1 von 5 Sternen 640 Sternebewertungen

Fear the Corn.

Corn is king in the Heartland, and Cael McAvoy has had enough of it. It’s the only crop the Empyrean government allows the people of the Heartland to grow—and the genetically modified strain is so aggressive that it takes everything the Heartlanders have just to control it. As captain of the Big Sky Scavengers, Cael and his crew sail their rickety ship over the corn day after day, scavenging for valuables. But Cael’s tired of surviving life on the ground while the Empyrean elite drift by above in their extravagant sky flotillas. He’s sick of the mayor’s son besting Cael’s crew in the scavenging game. And he’s worried about losing Gwennie—his first mate and the love of his life—forever when their government-chosen spouses are revealed. But most of all, Cael is angry—angry that their lot in life will never get better and that his father doesn’t seem upset about any of it. When Cael and his crew discover a secret, illegal garden, he knows it’s time to make his own luck...even if it means bringing down the wrath of the Empyrean elite and changing life in the Heartland forever.

Pressestimmen

“A tense dystopian tale made more strange and terrifying by its present-day implications.” Booklist

Under the Empyrean Sky is like a super-charged, genetically modified hybrid of The Grapes of Wrath and Star Wars. Wendig delivers a thrilling, fast-paced adventure set in a future agri-dystopia. Fascinating world building, engaging and deep characters, smooth, electric prose.” ―John Hornor Jacobs, author of The Twelve-Fingered Boy

“An imaginative, page-turning adventure that will delight science fiction fans and have them impatiently waiting for the next installment.”
―Joelle Charbonneau, author of The Testing

“A thoroughly imagined environmental nightmare with taut pacing and compelling characters that will leave readers eager for more.”
Kirkus Reviews

“This strong first installment rises above the usual dystopian fare thanks to Wendig’s knack for disturbing imagery and scorching prose.”
Publishers Weekly

“Wendig brilliantly tackles the big stuff―class, economics, identity, love, and social change―in a fast-paced tale that never once loses its grip on pure storytelling excitement. Well-played, Wendig. Well-played.”
―Libba Bray, author of the Gemma Doyle Trilogy, Going Bovine, and The Diviners

“A lunatic, gene-spliced, biofueled thriller. Fear the corn.”
―Tom Pollock, author of The City’s Son

I was very interested in this book because of the exciting blurb even though I've grown to be a bit cautious towards indie authors. I know they deserve a chance and all, but I've just had so many bad reading experiences that I try to rely on my gut feeling whether to give it a go or not. I'm glad that turned out to be a good decision in this case.

The Heartland is a very unique setting. The author throws the reader right into the story which I always love. It takes a while to get used to but it feels more authentic if there isn't too much explaining done. It feels more like real events rather than staged ones that need to be explained to me. Still, all the special vocabulary and things that existed in this world made the reading progress quite slow at the beginning.

But once I got the hang of it, I really enjoyed this book. The topic is actually very common, the rich exploiting the poor, keeping them in the dark about basically everything, only handing them scraps of the good stuff to have them hope for more. In the Heartlands, they grow corn. But not the corn that we know, it's a futuristic, highly aggressive type of corn. The land is wrecked by terrible pollen blizzards, drought and tumor diseases. Its people live a short and harsh life with little medical care

And still, this is the only world that Cael and his family and friends know. Cael is the captain of a scavenger crew that tries to find scraps and pieces of anything out there to sell it in the market. Cael is an interesting character. I can't say that I could identify with him but he wasn't unlikable either. I guess he was being a typical boy that's growing into a man. He needed to find his role in this brutal world. Decide whether he wants to live by the rules or go out there to make a difference. He behaves like an ass multiple times and still I understood his reasons most of the times.

Especially interesting was Cael's relationship to his father Arthur. He basically thinks his father is a loser and I couldn't understand why his father never had an open conversation with him up until almost the end of the book. Speaking of which, the last quarter of this novel is breath-taking. A wild and crazy ride of multiple POVs which were almost too much for me.

I can't wait to read more about Cael and his friends Rico and Lane, about Pop and Mer and his big love Gwennie. I'm very glad that I have the next two books waiting already on my Kindle so I'll keep you informed about this trilogy.

5,0 von 5 Sternen Great dystopic novel
Bewertet in Italien am 17. August 2015
Just finished and already begun reading Blightborn, its sequel in the Heartland trilogy.
Fast paced novel in a dystopic world wonderfully worldbuilded, with corn ruling everything (cornpunk?). I love Wendig style, his characters, his plot-weaving. Can't wait to know how this will end.
    Great work, a must read!!
Note: I'm Italian, and his english is simple enough to be read without checking the dictionary every now-and-then: don't be lazy, this is 5-star Sci-fi!!

4,0 von 5 Sternen Very Good First in Series

Cael lives in the Heartland, the vast stretch of country that once was home to many farms, family owned and growing everything that could be farmed. Now, it is all owned by the Empyrean, and the only crop that is grown is genetically engineered corn, which is used to make the corn syrup that provides the wealth to keep the Empyrean flotillas floating high above the common people. Cael and his crew of scavengers are out on their ship, looking for old machinery and parts to sell when they discover a secret garden of illegal vegetables. Cael sees the bounty as his way out of the dismal existence the Empyrean forces the Heartlanders to endure. Instead, he finds a rebellion, a new connection to family, and the chance to make a difference.

I read recently that Wendig considers himself a horror writer. I don't know if I would say that for all his work, although some definitely has a creepy aspect. This dystopian tale perhaps walks a line that comes close to horror, with its not-quite-sentient-but-certainly-aware engineered corn, and the Blight, a disease that turns people into almost plants. It's quite an interesting concept, and touches on many of today's controversial issues in both climate and food production. And it paints a somewhat scary picture. But not one without hope. That sliver of light does exist to push Cael and his friends on, even when they don't realize it.

The plot moves quickly once it gets going. It is a bit slow at the front end, but once the story is set-up, it gains momentum. Characters are well written, if not exceptional. The setting is the star here, at least for me. The Heartland is bleak and unfriendly. The people who are little more than forced labor for the Empyrean rulers are hard and tough. Most have a fatalistic attitude about everything. The Empyrean flotillas are like distant stars- too far to touch, a dream of wealth and power that most on the ground can never achieve. There is some mention of sex, but nothing explicit. The books are aimed at older teenagers, so that is not unexpected. There is also a fair bit of cursing, but, again, teenagers do curse, and, if you have read any of Wendig's other books, the language should not be a surprise.

All in all, this was a good read and sets up the next book nicely.

4,0 von 5 Sternen A well rounded story.

At first I was looking for the age group, with characters about 17 year olds, slingshots and hoverboats, I figured it was going to be hokey. Was able able to get me feeling something, a bit of the excitement of trespassing, and frustration at the impossible situation Caek and his family are thrust into. Writing is decent. Story is good. Imagery good. At some point I'll pick up book 2.

4,0 von 5 Sternen Pleasantly Surprised
Bewertet in Großbritannien am 11. Mai 2020
This was definitely written with a younger audience target base, which I knew before buying it, but I still thought it was worth a shot after reading Wanderers, which I was pleasantly surprised with. Under The Empyrean Sky is still enjoyable for a reader of any age, it has good pace, nice elements and the characters are ok. But I have to admit I constantly thought to myself while reading, that this would have been amazing if written as an adult horror sci-fi...but that's just me.
There isn't much in the way of plot, it all feels quite static, as if we're being prepared for the next books in the series, which is fine if your plan was always to read all three books in the Heartland trilogy, the second and third being Blightborn and The Harvest. And if you do read this first book you will definitely want to read the next.
Despite the couple of gripes I have with the book it is very enjoyable and definitely worth a read. Chuck Wendig's writing is very consistent and colourful and he's painted a fantastic world. I for one am anxious to see where we go from here.
And yes, I have bought the other two books in the trilogy.

5,0 von 5 Sternen A real page turner
Bewertet in Großbritannien am 1. September 2013
Great storytelling that grabs your attention and does not let go... A real prophetic piece that makes you think about what we are doing this very day to our planet and gives one a taste of what the consequences could be if we carry on as we are doing. I can't wait to read the next part of this story.
