In each geographic area, towns are chosen and then the dish is described and other information given such as; cooking courses, what to do during a day's visit, how to get there, where to stay, places to eat and other locations in the world serving that particular featured dish. Address, phone numbers, web sites are given for most. There are also several colour pictures on each page.
Food Festivals around the world are listed on 8 pages at the end of the book. There is also an index listing individual foods, and specific geographic locations.
For many the information will be overwhelming and there are no recipes included, but for deep-rooted arm chair travelers this would be perfect, also for those who dream of every food in the world.
The other reviewer covered the contents of the book very thoroughly. I only want to add that the organization of this book is what makes it really stand out. The table of contents is organized by continents and regions, and every city and country is clearly labeled. I also own National Geographic's Food Journeys of a Lifetime: 500 Extraordinary Places to Eat Around the Globe, which would be ten times better if it were arranged the way that this book is. Food Journeys of a Lifetime forces you to hunt around the book to find all of the foods for one area. It also has an inadequate index and no labeled maps. Ultimate Food Journeys, by contrast, makes it very easy to figure out which countries are included. And yes, this book is *fantastic* for armchair travel. I've been looking up local restaurants that serve all of the different dishes.
I also want to mention that I'm ordering the Food Cultures of the World Encyclopedia [4 volumes], just in case that might help any other world food fanatics like myself. I found that set online just by accident. It was just published in 2011 and it looks fantastic and thorough. It will round out my food and travel library along with Ultimate Food Journeys.
