Kurzbeschreibung

John Jobling takes readers beyond the myth in this unauthorized biography to present the first comprehensive account of the illustrious Irish rockers in 25 years. Drawing on extensive interviews with insiders including record label scouts, studio presidents, politicians, music critics, and childhood friends, Jobling investigates the U2's most personal relationships and controversial business practices, delivering a vivid portrait that traces the rock phenomenon from its conception to post-punk champions to political crusaders. Filled with captivating revelations, reader will learn:

- How Bono, the Edge, and Larry Mullen, Jr. worshiped with a Charismatic Christian church that practiced speaking in tongues during the band's early days

- Insider stories of the genesis and recording of classic albums such as The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby

- Creative tensions within the band and power struggles among management

- How the disappointments of the Rattle and Hum film and PopMart Tour spurred the band to greater creative heights

- Both the successes and controversies of Bono's wide-sweeping philanthropic and political ventures

- The disconnect between the band's personal lives and public personas

Sure to inspire debate with every music lover, U2: The Definitive Biography humanizes the band and paints an honest picture of a band's rise to the top, plunging into the heart and underlying soul of this iconic rock and roll band.

HASH(0x96829168) von 5 Sternen Don't waste your money - poorly written and fails to give attribution to original sources 5. November 2014
Von SLL - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe Verifizierter Kauf
While the author uses many sources for this book, which are listed in the bibliography, he fails to give full credit to the authors with attribution throughout the book - he has taken complete quotes from U2 By U2 (Bono, Larry, Edge and Adam), U2: A Diary (Matt McGee), and U2: At The End Of The World (Bill Flanagan) without even a footnote.Combined with grossly exaggerating the events these other authors have already written about, Jobling's editorial *opinion* is written as gospel truth/fact throughout the book. He writes as if he was a close, personal friend of the band - going so far as stating with certainty the personality of Edge's daughter, whom he's never met. No fact checking appears to have been done with this book otherwise publishers would have picked up on the countless factual errors in it. Furthermore, it is by no means "definitive." With all that has already been written about U2, it's a pity that this book took a lazy tabloid, sleazy approach to spin U2 in such a negative light with no hard truth to back up the claims Jobling states in the book. He gives plenty of ink to former U2 associates who have a gripe with the band with no fairness or balance to the writing. The book is not written through an impartial lens, rather with an agenda to make U2 appear to be something the band as a collective and its individual members are not. Don't waste your money on this. I'm sorry I did.

HASH(0x968293b4) von 5 Sternen Poorly Written 10. Dezember 2014
Von Matthew R. Williams - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
I started out very interested in the book but it quickly became apparent that the writing was poor, the author interjected too many of his own opinions on a variety of issues (The Catholic Church is the largest cult around? That's a paraphrase and btw I'm not Catholic.), and that he had an agenda of casting the band member in the poorest light possible. I lost count of how many times he pointed out how small and pathetic Larry was and how he believes Bono just makes things up. I actually could have forgiven a lot of the mud slinging if the writing had been stellar. It wasn't even close.

This book is truly terrible. No narratives, shady interviews, and just sloppy amateurish writing.

HASH(0x96829954) von 5 Sternen Very negative view of U2 28. November 2014
Von Sara V - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
Firstly, I'm a huge U2 fan and I've read other books written about or by the band. This author obviously does not like U2 given that the constant negative writing and stories about them...mostly Bono...are a constant throughout the book. The author uses "sources" for his quotes and anything negative any past employee of the band says, is deemed gospel.
Calling Bono "bug eyed" and the multiple mentions of his weight and in general having very little positivity towards them to say, makes me think this book was merely written as a 'tell all' of sorts.
How does the author know that Larry is constantly planning his exit from the band? He's still in the band today so this kind of gossipy gutter journalism pretty much tells the tale of how weakly this book was written.
Save your money.

HASH(0x96829b70) von 5 Sternen A for effort. F for execution. Skip it. 15. April 2015
Von Warren W Davis - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
I typically avoid giving one star reviews when it would be easier not to comment at all. In this case, however, reading this book was so dissatisfying I couldn't resist. To be sure, I am a fan of U2 and biased but I'm not sure who the target audience for this type of book would be other than fans or musicians who have a moderate interest in U2 or their celebrity. That said, the book works as a narrative cobbling together minor details trolled from pre-existing source materials, interviews, articles, but there doesn't seem to be any revelatory reporting, insight, explication or assessment other than endnotes designed to cast a pall over the success of the most successful of bands.

Jobling's description of the band's music is minimal and frequently relies on characterizations of critics rather than musicians, producers, other bands, industry insiders or fans. If I didn't know the songs, I would have no idea what Jobling is describing, why the musicianship was important, or the songs groundbreaking and successful.

Descriptions of the principals rely heavily on he said/she said quotes without citation of sources or at least setting the stage for context and conflict. I often felt like I was reading a canned "In Touch" or "Esquire" type of reporting based on flawed Wiki entries, anonymous blogs, and "insider sources close to the band." If the author's goal was to create cardboard characters in a static backdrop and take the piss out of U2 (especially Bono) - he succeeds only if the book sells so well with fans it turns them off. If his goal was to humanize celebrity and crack the surface of what makes their contributions to the music industry relevant years after their prime- he has failed.

After finishing this book, I was not sure who the audience was, how it could be described as definitive, or why it would be released in hardback with the price tag on it. I highly recommend skipping this book and reading books by Eamon Dunphy, Bill Flanagan and the "Stories Behind Every Song" books that are out there. Couple that with a few fun articles from Rolling Stone on the Achtung to Pop period and you're set.
