Pressestimmen

Replete with plentiful photographs as well as helpful textual descriptions and distribution maps, not to mention a superb introductory section explaining the essentials of the biology of tropical trees, "Trees of Panama and Costa Rica" is a book that should be in the backpack or field bag of anyone undertaking any manner of nature-oriented trip into the countryside of either of these two nations. -- Well-read Naturalist

There are many floras that professional botanists can use to identify tropical trees, but few quality field guides for laypersons. The current work is a concise, user-friendly field guide in the tradition of the popular Peterson and Audubon guides. . . . This is a valuable addition to the limited popular literature on tropical botany. -- Choice

Buchrückseite

"This is an impressive tour-de-force of tropical plant identification. The lively writing is accessible to nonspecialists, while the broad taxonomic coverage and authoritative species descriptions make this guide useful to professional botanists."--Brad Boyle, University of Arizona

"This book is exceptionally well organized and extremely user friendly, and the text is really good and succinct. The authors convey the excitement of learning tropical botany to successfully identify tree species, and the section on tree identification is exceptional--quite simply the best that I have ever read. This book fills a huge need and does so very well."--John Kricher, Wheaton College

HASH(0xa1f0606c) von 5 Sternen A very useful book 8. Februar 2013
Von Tyrolean - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
Tree identification in the tropics is a challenge considering the sheer number of species which should be covered. Of the c. 2300 tree species in the area this book covers 500. It contains pictures of leaves, sometimes of flowers and fruits and bark as well, but it lacks a key which may steer the user through the enormous diversity. The appendix lists leaf traits of the families covered grouped in "Leaf alternate-simple; alternate-compound; opposite-simple and opposite compound", which helps a bit in assigning an unknown sample to a family. The descriptions of the species are clear and concise, containing hints for correct identification and possible confusion with other species. The included distribution maps may also help with deciding for or against an identification, but the good photographic documentation of the species will certainly be of the greatest help. personally, I am always a bit unhappy with field guides which do not include all the species, because ever so often you are trying to identify a tree which is not covered and all the work will be in vain, but size and weight are limiting factors for field guides (Compare the 2,4 kilo and 1200 pages for the magnificent, complete "Trees of Southern Africa", which covers about 2000 species). Even with this limited choice the book weighs c. 1,1 kilo, due to the high quality, thick paper. A tree enthusiast who does not own or does not want to travel with the three volumes of "Árboles de Costa Rica" will have no choice but take this beautiful book with him or her ...

For those who are looking for a good guide for the identification of trees in Mexico and other tropical areas it has a lot of species that are share between different countries. The illustrations, photographs and maps are very clear and informative. Thank you for publishing this kind of books.

This book contains pictures of leaves but no flowers nor photos of entire trees thus making ID more difficult. The book is also heavy for carrying around int the field.
HASH(0xa1f060b4) von 5 Sternen Good field guide for the tropical trees 30. Mai 2016

Good field guide for the tropical trees. Some of the bark pictures could have been closer (more detail) and some full growth forms would be helpful - ie what a field botanist would key in on.
